In this paper we propose a gesture perception algorithm using compact one-dimensional representation of spatio-temporal motion-field patches. At the learning stage, motion-field patches are randomly extracted and stored as templates. When generating feature vectors for video sequences, we compare stored templates with video, calculate maximum similarities and save those values as elements of feature vectors. In order to reduce the complexity of patch calculation, we project the spatio-temporal motion data in patches both in space and time spans. Preliminary gesture perception experiments were conducted and promising results are obtained despite its simplified procedures.

data mining has become an important topic in effective analysis of gene expression data due to its wide application in the biomedical industry. In this paper, k-means clustering algorithm has been extensively studied for gene expression analysis. Since our purpose is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the k-means algorithm for a wide variety of data sets, we have chosen two pattern recognition data and thirteen microarray data sets with both overlapping and non-overlapping cluster boundaries, where the number of features/genes ranges from 4 to 7129 and number of sample ranges from 32 to 683. The number of clusters ranges from two to eleven. We use the clustering error rate (or, clustering accuracy) as evaluation metrics to measure the performance of k-means algorithm.

Tangent vectors are one of the best tools for learning variability in handwritten digits. Many research works indicate that tangent vectors provide a significant improvement of accuracy especially when used with SVM classifiers. However, since they are based on the use of affine transformations they substantially extend the runtime. In addition, the user should adequately select the transformations in order to highlight the variability of data. The present work aims to exploit accuracy improvement of tangent vectors while reducing the runtime. Therefore, we investigate the use of tangent vectors that are a priori extracted from training data. The idea is to substitute each pattern by its tangent vector Mahalanobis (TVM) distances with respect to all classes. Then, a SVM is trained over TVM values, which contain a priori knowledge and have a smaller size than digit images. Experiments performed on USPS database showed that the proposed approach improves recognition accuracy and allows a huge reduction in the runtime.

Among the central challenges of Ambient Assisted Living systems are the autonomous and reliable recognition of the assisted person's current situation and the proactive offering and rendering of adequate assistance services. In the context of emergency support, such situations may be acute emergency situations or long-term deviations from typical behavior that will result in emergency situations in the future. To optimize the treatment of the former and the prevention of the latter, reliable recognition of characteristic activities of daily living is necessary. In this paper, we present our multi-agent-based activity recognition framework as well as experiences made with it. Besides a detailed discussion of our hybrid recognition approach, we also elaborate on the tailoring of the underlying reasoning models to the individual environments and users in an initial learning phase. Finally, we present experiences made with the recognition framework in our Ambient Assisted Living Laboratory.

Combining advanced data mining and biomedical technologies to discovering new drug is an active research field nowadays. In this paper, we collect a herbal compounds for rheum database by searching about 150 prescriptions in ancient herbal document. 255 herbal compounds are included for their combinations to heal rheum. Our aim is to discover potentially new herbal compound in the database. We present the unsupervised pattern discovery algorithm to allocate the herbal compounds into different cluster in a self-organized way and obtain 42 clusters, some of which fully accord with Chinese medicine theory and the other can be considered as the potential new drug, which need to be validated by pharmacology further. We also present an executable and effect strategy for further experiments. We conclude that data mining methods, especially, unsupervised learning method, can be taken as a new technique to discovering new drugs.

In large scale applications, hundreds of new subjects may be regularly enrolled in a biometric system. To account for the variations in data distribution caused by these new enrollments, biometric systems require regular re-training which usually results in a very large computational overhead. This paper formally introduces the concept of online learning in biometrics. We demonstrate its application in classifier update algorithms to re-train classifier decision boundaries. Specifically, the algorithm employs online learning technique in a 2nu-granular soft support vector machine for rapidly training and updating face recognition systems. The proposed online classifier is used in a face recognition application for classifying genuine and impostor match scores impacted by different covariates. Experiments on a heterogeneous face database of 1,194 subjects show that the proposed online classifier not only improves the verification accuracy but also significantly reduces the computational cost.

Opinion mining is a process, used for automatic extraction of knowledge from the opinion of others about some particular topic or problem. With the growing availability of online resources on Web and popularity of fast and rich resources of opinion sharing such as online review sites and personal blogs, opinion mining has become an interesting area of research. World Wide Web is a fastest medium for opinion collection from users. Human perception and user opinion has greater potential for knowledge discovery and decision support. In this paper we have presented a survey which covers techniques and methods that promise to enable us to get opinion oriented information from text. This research effort deals with techniques and challenges related to sentiment analysis and opinion mining. We have followed systematic literature review process to conduct this survey. Our focus was mainly on machine learning techniques on the basis of their usage and importance for opinion mining. We have tried to identify most commonly used classification techniques for opinionated documents to assist future research in this area.

Over the past half century, the problem of text summarization has been addressed from many different perspectives, in various domains and using various paradigms. This paper intends to investigate machine learning for the text summarization system, taking into account of exciting new developments in adaptive evolving systems. Evolving processes, through both individual development and population evolution, inexorably led the human race to our supreme intelligence and our superior position in the animal kingdom. In this paper, we consider the system of an Automatic Text Summarization as an evolving system which learns incrementally through experience in the environment. This paper highlights the machine learning process for an Evolving Connectionist Text Summarizer ECTS, which is a Computational Intelligence (CI) system that operate continuously in the time and adapt their structure and functionality through a continuous interaction with the environment and with other systems.

In this paper, we explore new methods to improve the modeling of facial images under different types of variations like pose, ambient illumination and facial expression. We investigate the intuitive assumption that the parameters for the distribution of facial images change smoothly with respect to variations in the face pose angle. A Markov random field is defined to model a smooth prior over the parameter space and the maximum a posteriori solution is computed. We also propose extensions to the view-based face recognition method by learning how to traverse between different subspaces so we can synthesize facial images with different characteristics for the same person. This allow us to enroll a new user with a single 2D image.

This study investigates recognition of affect in human walking as daily motion, in order to provide a means for affect recognition at distance. For this purpose, a data base of affective gait patterns from non-professional actors has been recorded with optical motion tracking. Principal component analysis (PCA), kernel PCA (KPCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) are applied to kinematic parameters and compared for feature extraction. LDA in combination with naive Bayes leads to an accuracy of 91% for person-dependent recognition of four discrete affective states based on observation of barely a single stride. Extra-success comparing to inter-individual recognition is twice as much. Furthermore, affective states which differ in arousal or dominance are better recognizable in walking. Though primary task of gait is locomotion, cues about a walker's affective state are recognizable with techniques from machine learning.
