Active Expressions (A(e)) is a language-based model for the instantiation of type-safe concurrent applications. Using facilities included in modern object-oriented languages, Ae allows the definition of communication and synchronization patterns that, when combined with user provided functionality through well defined interfaces, instantiate complete concurrent applications. The approach has two unique characteristics: First, it shows that common patterns of concurrency can be expressed using language provided facilities. Second, the model can be implemented without requiring any complex user-interfaces, preprocessing stages or language extensions. It also shows that the pattern-based approach has the potential to reduce the complexity of developing concurrent applications.

A conceptionally simple algorithm is presented which decides the type of a query when the number of domains in common between two relations may exceed one. An implementation of the algorithm is outlined. The algorithm runs in O(max(e,e')) time and O(e) space complexity where e and e' are the number of edges in the transitive closure of the join graph and the query graph respectively. These results are relevant to the efficient processing of distributed queries.

Mobile distributed real-time databases are needed in security-critical applications, e.g., e-commerce, stock trading system, and military applications. In these applications, mobile distributed real-time database systems have to simultaneously satisfy two requirements in guaranteeing data security and minimizing the deadline miss ratio for admitted transactions. Multilevel secure database system based on mandatory access control can prevent direct unlawful information flows between transactions belonging to different clearance levels. However, it cannot prevent the covert communications between transactions belonging to different clearance levels. This paper presents a secure hybrid optimistic real-time concurrency control protocol (SHORTCC). The protocol not only considers carefully the inherent characteristics of mobile environment and the timing constraints of time-critical applications, but also achieves data security without sacrificing real-time performance significantly.

For communication-intensive parallelapplications, the maximum degree of concurrency achievable is limited by the communication throughput made available by the network. In previous work, we showed experimentally that the performance of certain parallelapplications running on a workstation network can be improved significantly if a congestion control protocol is used to enhance network performance. In this paper, we characterize and analyze the communication requirements of a large class of supercomputing applications that fall under the category of fixed-point problems, amenable to solution by parallel iterative methods. This results in a set of interface and architectural features sufficient for the efficient implementation of the applications over a large-scale distributed system. In particular, we propose a direct link between the application and network layer, supporting congestion control actions at both ends. This in turn enhances the system's responsiveness to network congestion, improving performance. Measurements are given showing the efficacy of our scheme to support large-scale parallel computations.

The ultimate goal of smart grid is to build a panoramic real-time system which covers the whole production process of power system. In view of the above reasons, this paper develops the Mysql-CIM model, realizes the distributed cloud storage of power network data, and develops the application of the parallel topology processing of power network. A parallel quadrilateral mesh generation using advanced front technology is presented in this paper. An improved quadrilateral mesh generation technology which uses the advancing Front technology was introduced by the authors previously. This new quadrilateral mesh generation technique has been developed for use with parallel computing environments, The parallel code has been created by adapting the sequential code using each coarse quadrilateral as a sub-domain for remeshing. A transputer-based parallel system and a heterogeneous network of workstations using the parallel virtual machine system were employed. The use of these parallel environments to improve the efficiency of the proposed mesh generator was investigated. Some pre-processes have been introduced to ensure load balancing during the parallel mesh generation. A post processor has been developed to assist in the assembly of the distributed portions of the mesh. Four examples are presented to demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of this parallel mesh generator. Some nearly linear speed-up curves have been achieved for some large meshes by using up to 11 transputers. (C) 1999 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
