In many natural and engineering science applications, systems of partial differential equations have to be solved. The finite element method represents an effective tool to solve these systems, but a disadvantage arises due to the very high computation times regarding conventional serial computers. Therefore, the finite element code SMART has been parallelized and can now be executed on different parallel machines on which a message passing system as Intel/NX, MPI or PARMACS is available. In this paper a short overview of the parallelization strategy is given bur the main focus lies on the benchmark of a given problem on different computer architectures, which shows the pros and cons of these machines as well as of parallel computing.

This paper provides details of a new system architecture enabling users / applications to roam seamlessly while they are actively processing executable code and / or communicating with remote entities. This architecture effectively decouples the running of applications from the underlying environment, facilitating both security and opportunistic processing on transitory resources. This decoupling also promotes the ability to create multiple clones of an application for performance gains. To improve the performance of the system, Fuzzy logic [2][16][17][18] and Case Based Reasoning (CBR) [3][19][20] have been applied to the system to better regulate activities such as job migration between resources or client connection handover from one Proxy to another. This paper addresses the query performance issue for Relational OLAP (ROLAP) datacubes. We present a distributed multi-dimensional ROLAP indexing scheme which is practical to implement, requires only a small communication volume, and is fully adapted to distributed disks. Our solution is efficient for spatial searches in high dimensions and scalable in terms of data sizes, dimensions, and number of processors. Our method is also incrementally maintainable. Using "surrogate" group-bys, it allows for the efficient processing of arbitrary OLAP queries on partial cubes, where not all of the group-bys have been materialized. Our experiments show that the ROLAP advantage of better scalability, in comparison to MOLAP can be maintained while providing, at the same time, a fast and flexible index for OLAP queries.

distributed publish/subscribe systems are an enabling technology for Industrial Internet of Things applications. While the number of sensors increases, network bandwidth becomes a bottleneck. Existing solutions typically aim to reduce network load either by pre-processing events directly on the edge or by aggregating events into larger batches. However, these approaches are rather static and do not adequately account for the application requirements of subscribers or the actual values of sensor measurements. This paper introduces methods for publish/subscribe systems to dynamically adapt payloads of events at runtime based on i) different data reduction and transformation strategies, ii) a wrapper solution around existing message brokers and iii) a semantics-based event schema registry. Consumers are able to subscribe to various quality levels and receive virtual events, that are reconstructed directly at the subscriber based on knowledge from the semantic model and dynamic decision rules. Our evaluation shows that the concept of virtual events can reduce the network load between publishers, the message broker and subscribers compared to multiple investigated compression techniques.

In this paper we extend the famous data reuse theory to parallel domain and propose parallel data reuse theory for OpenMP applications. The parallel data reuse theory further classifies the reuse in parallel programs, from four classes to eight. This paper systemically discusses the intra-/inter-iteration reuse and intra-/inter-processor reuse in OpenMP programs, and gives the judging and solving method of each reuse class. Besides, this paper does the case study and analysis of SPEComp2001 benchmarks, using our parallel data reuse theory We believe that parallel data reuse theory, will have a big impact on the locality optimization of parallelapplications.

distributed scalable video coding (DSVC) has recently been gaining many attentions due to its benefits in terms of computational complexity, error resilience and scalability, which are important for emerging video applications like wireless sensor networks and visual surveillance system (VSS). In DSVC, the side information (SI) creation plays a key role as it directly affects the DSVC compression performance and the encoder/decoder computational complexity. However, for many VSS applications, the energy of each VSS node is usually attenuating along the time, making the difficulty in transmitting surveillance video in real time. To address this problem, we propose a complexity controlled SI creation solution for the newly DSVC framework. To achieve the flexible SI creation, the complexity associated with SI creation process is modeled using a linear model in which the model parameters are estimated from a fitting process. To adjust the SI complexity, a user parameter is defined based on the availability of the VSS energy resource. Experiments conducted for a rich set of video surveillance data have revealed the benefits of the proposed complexity control solution, notably in both complexity control and compression performance.
