The rapid growth in edge computing devices as part of Internet of Things (IoT) allows real-time access to time-series data from 1000's of sensors. Such observations are often queried to optimize the health of the infrastructure. Recently, edge storage systems allow us to retain data on the edge rather than moving them centrally to the cloud. However, such systems do not support flexible querying over the data spread across 10-100's of devices. There is also a lack of distributed time-series databases that can run on the edge devices. Here, we propose TorqueDB, a distributed query engine over time-series data that operates on edge and fog resources. TorqueDB leverages our prior work on ElfStore, a distributed edge-local file store, and InfluxDB, a time-series database, to enable temporal queries to be decomposed and executed across multiple fog and edge devices. Interestingly, we move data into InfluxDB on-demand while retaining the durable data within ElfStore for use by other applications. We also design a cost model that maximizes parallel movement and execution of the queries across resources, and utilizes caching. Our experiments on a real edge, fog and cloud deployment show that TorqueDB performs comparable to InfluxDB on a cloud VM for a smart city query workload, but without the associated monetary costs.

This paper relates the computational demand of turbulence-resolving flow simulations for aircraft aerodynamics to the parallel scalability of the DLR flow solvers TAU and THETA, as well as the new CODA solver optimized for many-core HPC systems. Based on existing lower-fidelity simulations, the computational requirements for wall-resolved LES are first estimated for single aircraft components at wind-tunnel scale. It is shown that such simulations at reduced Reynolds numbers would be realizable within days to weeks with the current methods, if the largest available HPC clusters with more than 100,000 cores were used. However, an extrapolation to the HPC requirements of LES for a full 3D wing of an aircraft at flight Reynolds numbers highlights the urgent need for larger HPC resources and adapted parallel code designs, as well as more efficient numerical algorithms and physical models.

distributed publish/subscribe systems are an enabling technology for Industrial Internet of Things applications. While the number of sensors increases, network bandwidth becomes a bottleneck. Existing solutions typically aim to reduce network load either by pre-processing events directly on the edge or by aggregating events into larger batches. However, these approaches are rather static and do not adequately account for the application requirements of subscribers or the actual values of sensor measurements. This paper introduces methods for publish/subscribe systems to dynamically adapt payloads of events at runtime based on i) different data reduction and transformation strategies, ii) a wrapper solution around existing message brokers and iii) a semantics-based event schema registry. Consumers are able to subscribe to various quality levels and receive virtual events, that are reconstructed directly at the subscriber based on knowledge from the semantic model and dynamic decision rules. Our evaluation shows that the concept of virtual events can reduce the network load between publishers, the message broker and subscribers compared to multiple investigated compression techniques.

Based on the consideration of economic cost and system performance, the distributed storage technology using multiple data replicas has been widely applied in cloud storage applications. This redundant storage mode could ensure that the data loss event occurs only when all data replicas deployed on disks are damaged. In this case, the data durability is determined by the failure recovery model and replica organization strategy. However, the traditional approaches have poor performance in resisting data loss when associated failures occur. In this paper, we propose a novel modeling and analyzing approach for data durability towards cloud storage services. Initially, we model the processes of data failure and recovery using a no-retrogressive Markov chain. Furthermore, we present a routing table-based replica organization strategy to reduce the data loss caused by associated failures. Finally, our approach presented in this paper has been validated to be effective through a series of quantitative evaluations in the simulation environment.

Multi-population methods can combine multiple algorithms, with different parameters, interacting with each other at the same time. For instance, a genetic algorithm could find a promising global solution that is not optimal while another algorithm, more suitable for a local search, finds the global optimum. This approach has been followed extensively in recent years, with success. Moreover, there is a need for frameworks, architectures, and implementation models that can allow researchers the development of new parallel, asynchronous, heterogeneous, and parameter-free algorithms in a scalable way. In this work, we present an event-driven architecture, designed to distribute the processing of population-based algorithms asynchronously. The search algorithm uses a multi-population approach, creating multiple populations with different parameters of execution, allowing the implementation of multiple algorithms. In this work, we cross-breed Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Experiments show that the framework allows the combined algorithms outperform, with a high probability, single-algorithm versions. The framework we provide also has few parameters to tune since single-algorithm parameters are selected randomly;in general, this will boost the diversity of every algorithm by itself.

OODIDA (On-board/Off-board distributed Data Analytics) is a platform for distributing and executing concurrent data analytics tasks. It targets fleets of reference vehicles in the automotive industry and has a particular focus on rapid prototyping. Its underlying message-passing infrastructure has been implemented in Erlang/OTP. External Python applications perform data analytics tasks. Most work is performed by clients (on-board). A central cloud server performs supplementary tasks (off-board). OODIDA can be automatically packaged and deployed, which necessitates restarting parts of the system, or all of it. This is potentially disruptive. To address this issue, we added the ability to execute user-defined Python modules on clients as well as the server. These modules can be replaced without restarting any part of the system and they can even be replaced between iterations of an ongoing assignment. This facilitates use cases such as iterative A/B testing of machine learning algorithms or modifying experimental algorithms on-the-fly.

Motion estimation (ME) is an HEVC process for determining motion vectors that describe the blocks transformation direction from one frame to a future adjacent frame in a video sequence. ME is a memory and computationally intensive process which consumes more than 50% of the total running time of HEVC. To remedy the memory and computation challenges, in this paper, we present ReME, a highly paralleled processing-In-Memory accelerator for ME based on ReRAM. In ReME, the space of ReRAM is separated into storage engine and ME processing engine. The storage engine acts as the conventional memory to store video frames and intermediate data while the processing engine is for ME computation. Each ME processing engine in ReME consists of a SAD (Sum of Absolute Differences) model, an interpolation model, and a SATD (Sum of Absolute Transformed Difference) model that transfer ME functions into ReRAM-based logic analog computation units. ReME further cooperates these basic computation units to perform ME processes in a highly parallel manner. Simulation results show that the proposed ReME accelerator significantly outperforms other implementations with time consuming and energy saving.

Nowadays, there are many real-time spatial applications like location-aware services and traffic monitoring and the need for real time spatial data processing becomes more and more important. As a result, there is a tremendous amount of real-time spatial data in real-time spatial data warehouse. The continuous growth in the amount of data seems to outspeed the advance of the traditional centralized real-time spatial data warehouse. As a solution, many organizations use distributed real-time spatial data warehouse (DRTSDW) as a powerful technique to achieve OLAP (On Line Analytical processing) analysis and business intelligence (BI). Distributing data in real time data warehouse is divided into two steps: partitioning data and their allocation into sites. Several works have proposed many algorithms for partitioning and allocation data. But with a huge amount of real-time spatial data generated, the system performance degrades rapidly, especially in overload situations. In order to deal with this volumetry and to increase query efficiency, we propose a novel approach for partitioning data in real-time spatial data warehouse to find the right number of clusters and to divides the RTSDW into partitions using the horizontal partitioning. Secondly, we suggest our allocation strategy to place the partitions on the sites where they are most used, to minimize data transfers between sites. We have evaluated those proposed approaches using the new TPC-DS (Transaction processing performance council, http://***, 2014) benchmark. The preliminary results show that the approach is quite interesting.

Due to the growing demand on processing power and energy efficiency by today's data-intensive applications developers have to deal with heterogeneous hardware platforms composed of specialized computing resources. These are highly efficient for certain workloads but difficult to handle from the software engineering perspective. Even state-of-the-art database management systems do not exploit all heterogeneous hardware components, as their characteristics differ significantly. They are thus hard to integrate within a coherent database architecture. To address this problem, we propose a design concept that is based on a layered system software architecture: He..ro DB transforms a data-flow graph that describes the data-processing application to a task-based execution plan. Task implementations for the different computing resources and a reasonable degree of parallelism are chosen automatically based on available resources. The concept can cover any hardware configuration and application scenario. It is versatile and offers opportunities for independent optimization on each layer.
