As humans, we use our facial expressions to communicate our thoughts and feelings without saying a word. The recognition of these facial expressions can provide a better idea of people's thoughts or opinions. At present, the high performance of deep learning procedures has influenced the high efficiency of image recognition systems. This paper proposes a Facial Expression recognition System (FER) using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We have made use of features such as Gabor wave coefficients, Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG), Speed-Up Robust Features (SURF), and Local Binary patterns (LBP). We have used the Random Forest algorithm for the selection of the best features from the extracted feature set, accordingly, the learning procedure can be faster. The widely used CK+ database can be used for the appraisal of our proposed system. We have also compared our proposed method against similar FER systems and the consequences are satisfactory. © 2022 IEEE.

Due to increasing anticipated average life and health expenditure ambient assisted living (AAL) systems attract the attention of researchers. To successfully build and deploy AAL systems knowledge from different fields of computer science is needed: pervasive computing to gain the raw data, machine learning and pattern recognition to interpret these data and HCI knowledge to allow implicit interaction with the system. In this paper we propose a reference architecture for building AAL systems. Based on this reference architecture we introduce a toolbox that simplifies the development of AAL systems. The toolbox consists of a meta-model for pipeline systems, a low-level context model, high-level context ontologies, customizable components and tool support. © 2008 IEEE.

Recently, there has been a huge demand for assistive technology for industrial, commercial, automobile, and societal applications. In some of these applications, there is a requirement of an efficient and accurate system for automatic facial expression recognition (FER). Therefore, FER has gained enormous interest among computer vision researchers. Although there has been a plethora of work available in the literature, an automatic FER system has not yet reached the desired level of robustness and performance. In most of these works, there has been the dominance of appearance-based methods primarily consisting of local binary pattern (LBP), local directional pattern (LDP), local ternary pattern (LTP), gradient local ternary pattern (GLTP), and improved local ternary pattern (IGLTP). Keeping in view the popularity of appearance-based methods, in this paper, we have proposed an appearance-based descriptor called Improved Adaptive Local Ternary pattern (IALTP) for automatic FER. This new descriptor is an improved version of ALTP, which has been proved to be effective in face recognition. We have investigated ALTP in more details and have proposed some improvements like the use of uniform patterns and dimensionality reduction via principal component analysis (PCA). The reduced features are then classified using kernel extreme learning machine (K-ELM) classifier. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, experiments have been conducted on three different FER datasets using well-known evaluation measures such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score. The proposed approach has also been compared with some of the state-of-the-art works in literature and found to be more accurate and efficient.

The visual quality of the video is improved by realizing higher resolution and higher frame rate. In order to realize higher frame rate, we propose new frame rate up-conversion method using spatio-temporal convolutional neural network. In recent years, with the development of machine learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks, clearer interpolation frame estimation has been realized. However, with the conventional convolutional neural network method, it is difficult to estimate an accurate interpolation frames for video including complex motion. In order to deal with this problem, we adopted spatio-temporal convolution rather than conventional spatial convolution. Spatio-temporal convolution is thought to be effective for nonlinear motion because it can capture the time change of the motion of the object. We verified the effectiveness of the proposed method by using video data including complex motions such as rotational motion and scaling.

The ability of amputees to do daily duties is significantly restricted by upper limb amputation. The myoelectric prosthesis uses impulses from the surviving muscles in the stump to gradually restore function to such severed limbs. Such myosignals are unfortunately tedious and challenging to gather and employ. The process of transforming it into a user control signal after it has been acquired often consumes a significant amount of processing resources. By modifying machine learning strategies for pattern recognition, the factors that influence the traditional electromyography (EMG)-pattern identification approaches may be significantly minimized. Although more recent developments in intelligent pattern recognition algorithms could discern between a variety of degrees of freedom with high levels of accuracy, their usefulness in practical (amputee) applications was less obvious. This review paper examined how well various pattern recognition algorithms for hand prostheses performed. Finally, we discussed the current difficulties and offered some suggestions for future research in our paper's conclusion. © 2023 IEEE.

Kernel methods are effective machine learning techniques for many image based pattern recognition problems. Incorporating 3D information is useful in such applications. The optical profilometries and interforometric techniques provide 3D information in an implicit form. Typically phase unwrapping process, which is often hindered by the presence of noises, spots of low intensity modulation, and instability of the solutions, is applied to retrieve the proper depth information. In certain applications such as pattern recognition problems, the goal is to classify the 3D objects in the image, rather than to simply display or reconstruct them. In this paper we present a technique for constructing kernels on the measured data directly without explicit phase unwrapping. Such a kernel will naturally incorporate the 3D depth information and can be used to improve the systems involving 3D object analysis and classification.

Automatic facial expression recognition (FER) has gained enormous interest among the computer vision researchers in recent years because of its potential deployment in many industrial, consumer, automobile, and societal applications. There are a number of techniques available in the literature for FER;among them, many appearance-based methods such as local binary pattern (LBP), local directional pattern (LDP), local ternary pattern (LTP), gradient local ternary pattern (GLTP), and improved local ternary pattern (IGLTP) have been shown to be very efficient and accurate. In this paper, we propose a new descriptor called local neighborhood difference binary pattern (LNDBP). This new descriptor is motivated by the recent success of local neighborhood difference pattern (LNDP) which has been proven to be very effective in image retrieval. The basic characteristic of LNDP as compared with the traditional LBP is that it generates binary patterns based on a mutual relationship of all neighboring pixels. Therefore, in order to use the benefit of both LNDP and LBP, we have proposed LNDBP descriptor. Moreover, since the extracted LNDBP features are of higher dimension, therefore a dimensionality reduction technique has been used to reduce the dimension of the LNDBP features. The reduced features are then classified using the kernel extreme learning machine (K-ELM) classifier. In order to, validate the performance of the proposed method, experiments have been conducted on two different FER datasets. The performance has been observed using well-known evaluation measures, such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The proposed method has been compared with some of the state-of-the-art works available in the literature and found to be very effective and accurate.
