With the rapid development of Ubiquitous computing, context-aware technology as one of the core contents of the former has made a series of research progress and achievements. Context-aware technology can automatically provide the corresponding services according to the strategy given by the inference engine through sensing the related context of the environment and tasks. It is because context-aware technology can significantly improve the intelligence of computer interaction, the application of this technology to "Intelligent community" which is a new concept built on the highly developed Internet and sensor networks has become more promising and meaningful. As an important part of the intelligent community, the technology is also of great use for the disabled health service. Based on the research of the theory of context-aware technology and the examples of international development applications, this paper designs an ontology based context-aware system framework named CA-DHS for disabled health service. The hierarchy based framework uses ontology to standardize and formalize context information and complete context modeling. This framework includes the collection and encapsulation of the original context information and constructs a formal reasoning model. Moreover, the framework provides query and subscription services as the external interface of the system. On the basis of this framework, the DHS-Protosystem (Disabled Health Service Protosystem) is designed and implemented. This paper introduces implementation of query and subscription service module.

Voluntary residual motor efforts to the affected limb of patients after stroke have not been involved enough in most rehabilitation robot control strategies. In this paper, a natural integration between human and machine is proposed by using the surface electromyography (EMG) signals from six muscles which mainly contribute to the upper limb movement. A linear state space model is trained, which can estimate the real-time movement intention by using EMG signals, to calculate the movement needed forces and then provided by a cable-based upper limb rehabilitation robot. Ten healthy subjects are recruited to complete the tasks with and without robot assistances. The performances of the subjects with the assistances are compared to that of the subjects without assistances. Results show that the forces from the model were real-time continuously estimated and accurate. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in the group mean root mean square error (RMSE) and muscle activations between the task without assistance and with assistance. These results show that the robot using the state space model could provide physiologically appreciate assistance to the subject, and the robot could conduct the rehabilitation training combined with the voluntary residual motor efforts. Clinical test will be carried out to validate the feasibility of the robot-aided rehabilitation using myoelectrical control.

Microrobots show great potential to realize a wide range of medical applications especially in a hard-to-reach region within human body. Among a diversity of medical applications, the microrobots are expected to efficiently perform tasks within the human body, but the existing electromagnetic coil systems such as Helmholtz coil, Maxwell coil, etc. do not compromise on the insertion of such a large volume of human parts. We aim to magnetically manipulate diverse microrobots in medical applications with respect to surgical or biopsy tasks within insiders of the human head such as to perform brachytherapy with the helical microswimmer, etc. For this reason, we proposed a novel, a magnetically actuated system called the HyBrid system with the conceptual design in capability of generating both uniform and gradient magnetic fields. The system consists of three different coil setups orthogonally arranged over a large workspace which is available to let the human head inserted into. The simulation results of the magnetic field generation expressed that its performance is suitable and feasible towards magnetically manipulation within the human head, and more efficient than 3D-Helmholtz coil system under the same conditions.

Converging evidence indicates that spatial information of stimuli plays an important role in multisensory interaction. The spatial characteristics of auditory stimuli tended to be biased toward the spatial characteristics of visual stimuli. Many studies have shown that spatial consistency of audiovisual stimuli can influence the interaction between visual and auditory stimulus, however, the multisensory mechanisms were not well understood. Here, we investigated the effect of visual spatial information on auditory detection in a auditory attention task. The auditory stimuli were presented through two speakers that was placed on the left and right of the display. The visual stimuli were presented on the left (-8 degrees), right (+8 degrees) or central (0 degrees) locations. Visual stimuli and auditory stimuli were presented in a consistent or inconsistent position. From the results, the responses to consistent audiovisual stimuli were faster and more accurate than inconsistent stimuli. The effect of the left and right stimuli were greater in the central visual flash. This study provided evidence that auditory detection can be affected by the visual stimuli come from different spatial locations even if the visual stimuli were not attended. We expect that these results could helpful to process the audiovisual information of artificial intelligence.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a real-time intent recognition hardware system for robotic transtibial prosthesis, based on system-on-chip and field-programmable gate array (SoC-FPGA). The proposed system integrates the software programmability of an ARM-based processor with the hardware programmability of an FPGA. A hardware prototype was developed and a SVM-based pattern recognition algorithm was implemented with high-level synthesis technology. Experiments on a transtibial amputee subject demonstrated that the proposed system costs shorter decision time in identifying four lower-limb movement phases (sitting, standing, sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit).

The telephone, whether mobile, landline, or VoIP, is probably the most widely used form of long-distance communication. The most common use of voice biometrics is in telephone-based speaker verification, so the ability to operate effectively over the telephone is crucial. Similarly, access to vocal health monitoring, and other voice analysis technology, would benefit enormously if it were available over the telephone, via an automatic system. This paper describes a set of voice analysis algorithms, designed to be robust against the kinds of distortion and signal degradation encountered in modern telephone communication. The basis of the algorithms in traditional analysis is discussed, as are the design choices made in order to ensure robustness. The utility of these algorithms is demonstrated in a number of target domains.

Due to the recent development of industrial automation, some applications have been improved with computer vision techniques. One important task is to recognize and estimate the 3D pose of the object in the scene. In this work, we use a depth camera to capture the 3D information of a scene, and proposed a 3D pose estimation algorithm. A main difficulty of the 3D object recognition and pose estimation is the captured data may have noise from the environment light, shadow or sensors. In general, the reference model and target model are captured from the same depth camera, so they will have similar data structures. However, in our work, we consider the target model generated from Computer-Aided-Design, and the reference model is captured from the depth camera. The data from different sources will cause the estimation error. In this work, we have addressed this problem. Finally, we develop the simulation system for our proposed method, and also simulate a manipulator to accomplish the pick-and-place task.

In this paper, we introduce a novel hydraulic-driven upper extremity exoskeleton and present new type of force feedback control strategy, and the control experiment is also carried out. The experimental results show that the first generation upper extremity exoskeleton successfully follows the wearer's hand movements and achieve load capacity of 20 kg. The experimental results also indicate that the new type force feedback control can effectively reduce the interaction force between the wearer and the upper extremity exoskeleton and the oscillation. Compared with the control method simply using interaction force as the control input, the method with speed compensation controller can effectively reduce the amplitude and oscillation of the interaction force.

Rapid aging and low birthrate of the society is a big issue especially in suburban district of Japan. Since social participation is one of the major factors of well being, online communication helps the elderly in suburban community maintain social relationships by receiving various kinds of services provided from urban area. Our research group introduced a remote IT classroom for senior citizens as an example of local senior communities support each other by connecting those communities through the Internet. This remote IT classroom is based on video conferencing system, and the IT lecturer and his assistants in urban district taught participants live in suburban district how to use tablet devices. From previous study, assistants pointed out that they had difficulties in establishing conversation with the students. Thus we propose the use of telepresence robots in order to overcome this issue. Results from the remote IT classroom indicated that the application of telepresence robots lowered the barrier for initiating conversation between remote assistants and local students. © Springer international Publishing AG 2017.

Non-rigid structure from motion (NRSfM) is a well-known challenging task due to its inherent ambiguities. Most existing approaches rely on kinds of low-rank linear subspaces assumption to make the problem well-constrained. In this paper, we make two contributions. First, we empirically present that relying on the assumption, 3D shapes lie on a union of non-linear subspaces, can better model the complex non-rigid motion than its linear counterparts. Second, we introduce the nonlinear low-rank representation as a regularizer to the objective function for NRSfM and show that it can be solved by alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM). Our experiments demonstrate that our method yields more accurate reconstruction and more reasonable clustering results than state-of-the-art methods, on CMU MoCap and UMPM datasets.
