Gamification refers to the use of game elements in a non-game context so as to increase users’ engagement and improve their experience. In recent years, gamification has been promoted by both practitioners and scholars as a superior alternative to traditional training methods in terms of improving students’ learning process and performance. In this paper, we attempted to verify the effectiveness of gamified training in a unique context, i.e., to help senior users learn new information technology. We proposed a theoretical model to explain why gamification can positively affect senior users’ learning experiences and outcomes. Through a laboratory experiment and a pilot study of 9 senior participants, we investigated whether or not gamification can really help improve senior people’s learning process and performance. This paper not only extends gamification studies to the context of senior citizen education, its empirical results can also help practitioners design better gamified applications for senior users. © Springer international Publishing AG 2017.

The rapidly emerging Internet of Things supports many diverse applications including environmental monitoring. Air quality, both indoors and outdoors, proved to be a significant comfort and health factor for people. This paper proposes a smart context-aware system for indoor air quality monitoring and prediction called DisCPAQ. The system uses data streams from air quality measurement sensors to provide real-time personalised air quality service to users through a mobile app. The proposed system is agnostic to sensor infrastructure. The paper proposes a context model based on Context Spaces Theory, presents the architecture of the system and identifies challenges in developing large scale IoT applications. DisCPAQ implementation, evaluation and lessons learned are all discussed in the paper. © 2017, Springer international Publishing AG.

Chessboard detection and corner extraction are imperative during the camera calibration process, which is a fundamental work in computer vision. This paper describes a new chessboard corner detection algorithm using the amplitude spectrum feature of circular sampling at each point as corner response function. A simple thresholding technique is that only the points near a chessboard corner will get positive corner response. However, image noise will bring a lot of false positives. The distribution of false positive response with respect to image noise is given, this distribution also has a property like the three-sigma rule in Gaussian distribution, that can be used as thresholding rule. The only parameter needed is the standard deviation of image noise, which can be measured using some patches of the image for once. Experiment is presented showing the efficiency of the proposed method against noise, compared with existing algorithm under simulated image.

In the sandbox world of cyber-physical systems and internet-of-things a number of applications is only eclipsed by a number of products that provide solutions for specific problem or set of problems. Initiatives like the European project $$EMC^2$$ serve as cross-disciplinary incubators for novel technologies and fuse them together with state-of-the-art industrial applications. Compared with conventional human computer interface (HCI) designs, communications with the machine using commands of the person's active hand gestures is a convenient and friendly scheme and will gradually become a HCI tendency in the near future. Especially for the specific person with some certain degree of disabilities, a well-developed service robot with the function of the person user's body gesture and hand gesture recognition deployed in the home or the security center will make a great benefit. This study aims mainly at an integration design of both the service robot device and the wearable armband-based hand gesture and body gesture control. The person user with disabilities can establish his desired body gesture or hand gesture commands for each of all function operations in the service robot, such as movements of the robot platform and command operations of the application program provided by the robot. A feasibility analysis to system development plans of the service robot controlled by body gesture or hand gesture commands will be explored in this work, including designs of (1) gesture action command database establishments, (2) recognition of gesture commands, (3) recognition of identity of the gesture command providing user, (4) data transmissions among the user with an armband, the service robot with applications, and the remote system monitor center, and (5) system integrations of all technique component issues.

Nowadays as more and more tasks require humans to collaborate with robots in modern industry, and the focus of many robotic researchers worldwide has turned towards human-robot collaboration. In human-robot interaction, ensuring the safety issues has the absolute priority for all other research work. In this context, sensorless collision detection and fast response researches in robotics contribute significantly to solve the safety issues. However, existing approaches for collision detection involve in the usage of external sensors, not fit for closed industrial robots or the offline observer based on robot's the generalized momentum, poor in the real time response. In this study, a different method of external forces detection for sensor-less industrial robots using dynamics model identification is proposed. The main idea of our method is to identify the external torques by the comparison of the actual motor torques with the predicted joint torques based on dynamics model. Without using any extra sensors, a strict dynamics model including the parameterized friction torques has been formulated only by utilizing the measurements of the joint angles and joint torques. In addition, the essential response strategies in the post-contact stage are the main directions for our following research. Finally, the model accuracy and performance of the proposed method were evaluated in a 6-DOF manipulator. The experimental results demonstrated the reliability of our detection method basically.

To efficiently process 3D unorganized point clouds with noise and significant outliers, it is important to smooth the point clouds, but still retain faithfully the original surface geometry as much as possible. In this paper, we present a simple and fast saliency-guided smoothing method of 3D point. The method consists of three stages: firstly, saliency value for each point in noisy point clouds is calculated by site entropy rate method;secondly, robust vertex normal vector is updated by neighboring noisy normal vectors with weight terms related to detected visual saliency metrics;finally, based on least-squares error criterion, vertex position is updated with the integration of vertex normal vector. Analysis and experiments show the advantages of our proposed method over similar methods in the literature on synthetic data.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is in a continuous development, the basic notion of IoT is that each object within the global network is accessible and interconnected. In such an environment, Wireless Sensor Networks play a crucial role, since they support different applications domains. Nevertheless, security issues are the major obstacle for their deployment. Among these issues, authentication of the different interconnected entities and exchanged data confidentiality. In this paper, we propose a new ultra-lightweight authentication scheme for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks in the context of IoT. This scheme allows both of the sensor and the user to authenticate each other in order to secure the communication. The proposed scheme uses only nonces, exclusive-or, concatenation operations to achieve mutual authentication. Moreover, it terminates with a session key agreement between the sensor node and the user. To assess our scheme, we carry out a performance and security analysis. The obtained results show that the proposed scheme provides authentication with low energy consumption, and ensures a resistance against different types of attacks. © 2017, Springer international Publishing AG.

In times of the demographic change and the increasing need of novel concepts to meet the requirements of older adults’ care in the near future, health care robots could be a potent solution to meet shortcomings in the health care sector. Even though the potential of robotic home care assistance is promising, the question if older persons would accept a robotic assistance at home is still underexplored. Adopting a three-step procedure, older adults’ perceptions towards home care robots are empirically explored. In a first step, focus groups were accomplished to understand older persons’ perceptions on benefits and barriers. Second, a survey study was applied to determine acceptance criteria, the perceived usefulness and the extent and types of concerns toward a domestic robot in homecare. Finally, in a further survey study, specific care situations in the home care settings had to be evaluated in a third study, thereby comparing preferences for a human care persons vs. a robotic care assistant. Outcomes reveal both, agesensitive as well as age-insensitive findings. While overall a positive attitude towards home care robots was found, serious concerns in terms of fear of loss of control and connection to family members are prevailing. Outcomes contribute to an understanding of social factors in the development and implementation of accepted home care solutions and might be helpful to develop age-sensitive information and communication concepts. © Springer international Publishing AG 2017.
