In this work, we developed a model for representation and indexing of objects for given input query sketch. In some applications, where the database is supposed to be very large, the retrieval process typically has an unacceptably long response time. A solution to speed up the retrieval process is to design an indexing model prior to retrieval. In this work, we study the suitability of Kd-tree indexing mechanism for sketch based retrieval system based on shape descriptors like Scale invariant feature transform(SIFT), Histogram of Gradients (HOG), Edge orientation histograms (EOH) and Shape context (SC). To corroborate the efficacy of the proposed method, an experiment was conducted on Caltech-101 dataset. And we collected about 200 sketches from 20 users. Experimental results reveal that indexing prior to identification is faster than conventional identification method. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Automatically identifying the language being spoken from speech plays a vital role in operating multilingual speech processing applications. A rapid growth in the use of mobile communication devices has inflicted the necessity of operating all speech processing applications in mobile environments. Degradation in the performance of any speech processing applications is majorly due to varying background environments, speech coding and transmission errors. In this work, we focus on developing a language identification system robust to degradations in coding environments in Indian scenario. Spectral features (MFCC) extracted from high sonority regions of speech are used for language identification. Sonorant regions of speech are the regions of speech that are perceptually loud, carry a clear pitch. The quality of coded speech in high sonority region is high compared to less sonorant regions. Spectral features (MFCC) extracted from high sonority regions of speech are used for language identification. In this work, GMM-UBM based modelling technique is employed to develop an language identification (LID) system. Present study is carried out on IITKGP-MLILSC speech database. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The technological framework of the health sector is complex and problematic;each actor has created islands of information, where the exchange of information with other actors is the exception, where this provides a sea of technological heterogeneity and information systems providers with different stages of development even inside institutions. This scheme is not very effective in coordinating policies and implements concrete joint projects to improve the global search. In this scenario the efforts are not coordinated, processes are duplicated, yield is lost and increase costs. This paper presents the results of a technology proposal that allows solving this problematic. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Current research and development being conducted by the international Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure Consortium (GPII) is to create technology for cloud-based accessibility. Using this new technology, users of computer systems can create personal profiles that specify how computer applications should be configured to meet their individual needs. National Institute of Standards and technology researchers have developed a prototype voting support system with enhanced accessibility capabilities based on the cloud-based accessibility work of the GPII, to evaluate the applicability of this new technology in the voting domain. Using this prototype, the Next Generation Voting Platform (NGVP), voters can use a mobile device (e.g. tablet computer) to exchange data with a cloud-based system to download settings in order to configure complex ballot interfaces for marking a blank ballot. The research performed on the NGVP suggests that cloud-based accessibility has the potential to be useful to voters when integrated into mobile ballot-marking systems. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The fast development in the field of robotics has become more and more notorious throughout the past years. Nowadays technology in general and robotics in particular search for modular and flexible applications in order to answer the demands of a wide range of problems in an efficient manner. However there are several robotic solutions already implemented and some still available to be implemented that do not use modular tools. The robotic Operative System (ROS) appears to be the unifying tool to connect all software developers allowing any developer in both education and professional areas to be able to develop complex software using small iterations of simple software. Still, despite of the several robotic solutions available, there are several robots that do not use the robotic Operative System (ROS) and have limitations in terms of autonomously correct errors during their tasks. Moreover when developing new robots and software to the robotic area there is an important aspect to be consider: the selection of the methodology to be used. In this paper, it will be presented a challenge propose to college students using the ROS framework in a common robotic problem, the pick and place operations. The main aim for this challenge is to show how to produce software in a modular and flexible way using ROS can prompt the rapid development in all robotic applications. Moreover the challenge had one particular real end, the European robotics Challenges (EUROC) - a challenge aiming to develop a robot for shop floor logistics and manipulation. Furthermore this challenge was based in the three tiers paradigm: 1 recognition/sensing tier, 2-effector tier and 3-the control tier and was built using the ROS framework. Another advantage of our proposed pick and place approach is the ability to have a robot safely and efficiently inserted in an unknown environment. Design of proficient control algorithms for mobile robot navigation in an unknown and changing environment, with obstacles and walls is a complicated task. The objective for building the intelligent planner is to plan actions for multiple mobile robots to coordinate with others and to achieve the global goal by avoiding static and dynamic obstacles. This paper demonstrates a hybrid method of two optimization techniques that are Artificial Immune System (AIS) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). The capability of overcoming the shortcomings of individual algorithms without losing their advantage makes the hybrid techniques superior to the stand-alone ones. The main objective behind this is to improvise the result of a path planning approach than done on AIS and GA separately. The hybridization includes two phases;in first enhancing the local searching ability by AIS and secondly to add stochasticity, instead of choosing random population, the last generation of AIS will be accepted as input to the next process of GA in the hybrid AIS-GA. From the result and observations, it can be inferred that the proposed algorithm is able to efficiently explore the unknown environment by learning from past behavior towards reaching the target. The result obtained from the hybrid algorithm is compared over AIS and GA and found to be more efficient in terms of convergence speed and the time taken to reach at the target, making it a promising approach for solving the mobile robot path planning problem. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

People can get easily helps from intelligently autonomous mobile agents nowadays. The services from the agents maintain social function as a part of human-robot interaction (HRI). As the technical developments improve increasingly, there are still lacks of clarification of the social functions which the mobile agents can achieve, and relationship-discovery between the human beings and the agents subject to the HRI. From sociological aspect, this study seeks the sociological relevance created by this kind of HRI, and evaluates the corresponding social value by taking significant examples. Starting from a causality analysis between the social needs which the human beings desire and the accessible services which the agents can provide, this paper confirms first the value of navigating an agent to finish the service, and recognizes the navigation as one part of the interaction during the service. The core technique of this kind of robotic interaction monitors the dynamic changes of environment, provides an adequate route plan to reach the goal service, and reacts properly the environmental changes during approaching the goal.

The location accuracy of the workpiece is the key problem in the glue dispensing operation of the automobile engine cover. A vision location system is designed for the glue dispensing robot to locate the position of the feature points in the engine cover. The system correct the original teaching trajectory in real time to maintain the accuracy of the gluing operation. The system is based on a digital signal processor (DSP) dedicated to image processing for its real-time performance. Image preprocessing operations including gray value linear transformation and median filtering are applied to modify the image quality for the subsequent feature-point detection procedure. Experiments are conducted and the result shows that the system is feasible after the calibration of the camera.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are widely used in many sensitive applications, where human deployment is almost impossible. Due to resource constraints, the network and hence the forwarded information is open for attacks. Hence, it is desirable to ensure source to sink privacy in order to maximize the network lifetime. In this paper we studied security threats and energy constraints while deploying WSN nodes. Moreover, we propose a Trust Based Secure and Energy Preserving Routing Protocol (TEPP), in multi-hop WSN. The proposed solution monitors reputation and trust worthiness of nodes and maintains a history of interaction between nodes to identify secure and trust worthy path. The effectiveness of our proposed protocol has been experimentally verified against various attacks.
