Most of the speech processing applications suffer from a degradation in performance when operated in emotional environments. The degradation in performance is mostly due to a mismatch between developing and operating environments. Model adaptation and feature adaptation schemes have been employed to adapt speech systems developed in neutral environments to emotional environments. In this study, we have considered only anger emotion in emotional environments. In this work, we have studied the signal level conversion from anger emotion to neutral emotion. Emotion in human speech is concentrated over a small region in the entire utterance. The regions of speech that are highly influenced by the emotive state of the speaker is are considered as emotionally significant regions of an utterance. Physiological constraints of human speech production mechanism are explored to detect the emotionally significant regions of an utterance. Variation of various prosody parameters (Pitch, duration and energy) based on their position in the sentences is analyzed to obtain the modification factors. Speech signal in the emotionally significant regions is modified using the corresponding modification factor to generate the neutral version of the anger speech. Speech samples from Indian Institute of technology Kharagpur Simulated Emotion Speech Corpus (IITKGP-SESC) are used in this study. A subjective listening test is performed for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed conversion. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

A Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a vital role in various applications associated with sustainable development and clean energy. In these applications, the GIS provides a capability to upload onsite geographical information collected by public into online maps. One of the major problems is how to make a decision for those reports. In this paper, we study two types of cognitive modes for decision making: argument and narrative *** investigate how various discussion representations, argumentation theoretical model, and reasoning modes of geo-graphics problems affect knowledge accumulation and argument quality. We conduct empirical tests on different groups of participants regarding their discussions on a particular offshore wind farm project as a case study. We have demonstrated that graph representation provides better results than threaded representation for collaborative work. We also illustrate that the argument theoretical model leads to reduce participants’ performance. Moreover, we conclude that there is no significant difference between narrative representation and graph representation in the participants’ performance to construct knowledge. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

As image segmentation has become a definite prerequisite in many of the image processing and computer vision applications, an effort towards evaluating such segmentation techniques is indeed found very less in literature. In this paper, we carried out a comprehensive evaluation of five different gradient magnitude (GM) based image segmentation techniques using CBIR (Content Based Image Retrieval). Firstly, boundary probabilities are detected using the gradient magnitude based techniques such as - Canny edge detection (pbCanny), Second moment matrix (pb2MM), Multi-scale second moment matrix (pb2MM2), Gradient magnitude (pbGM) and Multi-scale gradient magnitude (pbGM2). Further, Ridgelets are applied to these boundaries to extract radial energy information exhibiting linear properties and PCA to reduce the dimensionality of these features. Finally, probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifiers are used to classify and observe the performance of gradient magnitude techniques in classification process. We observed the performance of these algorithms on the most challenging and popular image datasets namely Corel-1K, Caltech-101, and Caltech-256. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In this paper, we present a implementation of delivery application using a development method for mobile applications. Mobile applications are different from desktop applications because mobile devices are resource-limited embedded systems and their application domain is smaller than desktop domain. So we need a development method that is simply applicable to mobile software running on mobile devices. Our method consists of five development phases including requirements analysis, architecture design, navigation design, page design, and implementation and testing phase. Software developers can apply our method to developing their applications in a straightforward manner. We applied this method to implementing a delivery application.

Language modeling is a fundamental research problem that has applications for many NLP tasks. For estimating probabilities, most research on language modeling uses n-gram approach to factor sentence probabilities. However, the assumption of n-gram is too simple to cope with the data sparseness problem, which affects the final performance of language models. At the point, Hierarchical Word Sequence (abbreviated as HWS) language model, which uses word frequency information to convert raw sentences into special n-gram sequences, can be viewed as an effective alternative to normal n-gram method. In this paper, we improve upon the basic HWS approach by generalizing it to exploit not only word frequencies but word association. For evaluation, we compare word association based HWS models to normal HWS models and normal n-gram models. Both intrinsic and extrinsic experiments verify that word association based HWS models can achieve better performance. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Few companies in developing countries are now claiming to provide Smart Nano Grid applications which can help the smart home residents get a reliable, cost effective and uninterrupted power supply. As the technology of Smart Nano Grid is an emerging technology comprising the features of Smart Grids and Nano Grids, no significant work has been done for providing guidance on acceptance testing procedures. As a result, these companies feel it complicated to test these applications from the user's perspective. Furthermore, the majority of the consumers doesn't have any criteria to determine whether or not accept the system. This paper presents a complete Acceptance Test Procedure to assist the companies developing Smart Nano Grid applications to test these applications according to end user perspective.

In order to get a better understanding of the obstacle avoidance of a mobile robot when it is tracking a target,we used Kinect to take the place of the traditional range radar and *** part uses the improved particle filter *** deal with the particle degeneracy problem, a new particle filter(PF) based on the Bacteria Foraging Optimization(BFO) algorithm is *** artificial potential field method increases the safe area which was applied to remove the information of an obstacle not disturbing the motion of the robot,so as to improve the ability of the mobile robot to pass through a narrow passage by the traditional artificial potential field *** results show that the system can accomplish the task of tracking and obstacle avoidance.

In this paper, a discrete control system is implemented for a positioning device using a voice-coil motor (VCM). The VCM positioning system is configured with a proportional-Integrator observer (PIO) and discrete sliding mode controller (DSMC). Since the PIO could estimate system unmeasurable parameters for compensation, the implemented control system subject to uncertainty might feature high robustness. Through experimental examinations of step response for a sliding stage under dry friction and with a mass of 728 g, the position error of 7.3 mu m was obtained for a step command of 3 mm. The percentage of position error is 0.25%. Compared with that obtained by using the PID controller is 0.57%, the superiority of the implemented control system is demonstrated.

robots have been making inroads to human life in almost all spheres. Spybots can be immensely useful for unmanned surveillance and covert spying operations. If online streaming of the spied data can be made feasible, that would be an added advantage. In this paper, we propose an unmanned Spybot that can be controlled remotely from webpage based commands, using a WiFi network. It can also stream back the spied data, that could be video or images, over the WiFi network. A prototype Spybot is developed. Users can give the control instructions from a web-page. The WiFi module on board the Spybot receives these commands from the web-page and passes those to the microcontroller. The microcontroller interprets the control commands, and generates control signals to operate the Spybot as per the user’s commands. The captured images and video data is sent back to a smartphone over WiFi network. Performance evaluation is carried out, to measure various limits of operation of the Spybot. The results are encouraging. The proposed Spybot can have potential applications for military, security forces and surveillance purposes. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In this paper, we propose an automatic tool for creating dictionary entries of Tamil words for the Universal Networking Language (UNL). Dictionary plays a crucial role in many NLP applications especially in machine translation (MT) systems. However, creating dictionary entries manually is a time consuming process. Moreover the UNL dictionary consists of additional features such as semantic constraints and attributes. To address this complex task, we propose a domain specific approach where the dictionary entries are created automatically using other word-based resources such as WordNet, bilingual dictionaries, and the UNL ontology. For the source of domain specific words, we use domain specific documents from the web. The resources used for extracting meaningful words from the documents are: Morphological analyzer, to extract the grammatical information of a given word, WordNet, to identify the semantics of the given word and UNL KB (Knowledge Base) to obtain the semantic constraints of a given word. Semantic constraints help to know the tense mood and aspect of the given word. Sometimes these semantic constraints may not be determined correctly by the automatic process. In such cases, a semantic similarity based filtering method based on UNL ontology is used to remove the incorrect dictionary entries. Thus, this automatic dictionary tool handles words semantically and also improves the correctness of the dictionary. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.
