We propose to study the time reversal (TR) technique for wireless communications. In a TR application, the time-reversed signal of the channel impulse response (CIR) of the medium is retransmitted back from the base station. Thus a compensation of the multipath effects leads to a space-time focused signal on the receiver position. Spatial focusing allows a concentration of the signal power on the receiver position while reducing it at positions far from the receiver. Temporal focusing reduces echoes of the received signal and simplify its processing. In this paper, we explain the method used for data transmission and we present experimental results.

Recently, off-the-shelf HD video cameras are recognized low-cost video capture for the study of human movements associating with sport training, sport performance evaluation, physical impairment evaluation and rehabilitation evaluation. The data required for these applications are usually dimensions, 3D distance, angular elements and speed of movement of the various body components such as the head, trunk and limbs. More complex data include isoline plots, profile and cross-section and 3D textured models of these body parts. This paper focuses on the developed techniques that are used for acquiring high accuracy data for these applications. In the paper, the results of three current case studies are provided to show the quality of the videogrammetric acquired data. The studies show that the techniques developed produce high accuracy data for various applications in movement research.

Compressed sensing (CS), which breaks the limitations of the traditional Nyquist sampling theorem, takes full advantage of the sparse signal characteristics to achieve the accurate reconstruction of the compressed signal. An effective algorithm called GOAMP (Generalized Orthogonal Adaptive Matching Pursuit) algorithm was proposed by studying and summarizing the existing Matching Pursuit algorithm. The GOAMP algorithm can reconstruct the compressed signal exactly when the sparsity of the signal is unknown. Compare to the OMP (Orthogonal Matching Pursuit), the number of columns of the measurement matrix selected at each step is decided by the descent speed of the residual. Then like the OMP and the GOMP (Generalized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit), use the columns (atoms) selected before to reconstruct the original signal. The experiments show that the algorithm can choose the near-optimal iteration step quickly, signal reconstruction quality and efficiency of the algorithm are both ideal.

A 32-channel digital spectrometer PIXIE-32 is being developed for nuclear physics or other radiation detection applications requiring digital signalprocessing with large number of channels at relatively low cost. A single PIXIE-32 provides spectrometry and waveform acquisition for 32 input signals per module whereas multiple modules can be combined into larger systems. It is based on the PCI Express standard which allows data transfer rates to the host computer of up to 800MB/s. Each of the 32 channels in a PIXIE-32 module accepts signals directly from a detector preamplifier or photomultiplier. Digitally controlled offsets can be individually adjusted for each channel. signals are digitized in 12-bit, 50 MHz multi-channel ADCs. Triggering, pile-up inspection and filtering of the data stream are performed in real time, and pulse heights and other event data are calculated on an event-by event basis. The hardware architecture, internal and external triggering features, and the spectrometry and waveform acquisition capability of the PIXIE-32 as well as its capability to distribute clock and triggers among multiple modules, are presented.

The multiview-video-plus-depth (MVD) format selected for 3D video standardization describes 3D scene by video and associated depth and enables generation of virtual views through the depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) process. The Kinect (TM) sensor is equipped with a red-green-blue (RGB) camera and a depth sensor and it is suitable to capture synchronous video and depth streams. However, these sensors do not produce data with pixel-wise correspondence that is required by the DIBR process. In this paper we describe the process to use the Kinect device for MVD data creation. The processing includes sensor calibration, rectification of depth and texture, depth projection to the RGB camera pose, joint depth map filtering, and final projection to virtual view. As a part of this processing we describe a novel joint median filtering method that mitigates artifacts on object edges in the synthesized view, caused by depth to texture misalignments. The process presented in this paper produces an unpaired MVD representation of 3D scene, which can be utilized for enabling advanced 3D video applications.

Independent component analysis (ICA) is a statistical signalprocessing technique for separation of mixed voices, images and signal. The basic idea of ICA is to find the underlying independent components in the mixture by searching for a linear or nonlinear transformation and minimizing the statistical dependence between components. Due to the computational complexity of ICA and commonly used data sets, the ICA process is very time-consuming. For reducing the complexity of ICA algorithm, modularity, hierarchy and parallelism are introduced in VLSI implementation. It is more efficient when the cost function, which measures the independence of the components, is optimized. System level design of ICA with evolutionary optimization algorithm is proposed for EEG signalprocessing. The use of evolutionary computation based optimizations i.e Adaptive Shuffled Frog Leap Optimization Algorithm with additional operations of mutation, crossover and feedback resolves the permutation ambiguity to a large extent [8]. This ensures the convergence of the algorithm to a global optimum and its VLSI implementation ensures high speed processing.
