The IAEA, in collaboration with the Joint Research Center (Ispra, IT) and Hybrid Instruments (Lancaster, UK), has developed a full scale, liquid scintillator-based active interrogation system to determine uranium (U) mass in fresh fuel assemblies. The system implements an array of moderate volume (∼1000ml) liquid scintillator detectors, a multichannel pulse shape discrimination (PSD) system, and a high-speed data acquisition and signal processing system to assess the U content of fresh fuel assemblies. Extensive MCNPX-PoliMi modelling has been carried out to refine the system design and optimize the detector performance. These measurements, traditionally performed with 3He-based assay systems (e.g., Uranium Neutron Coincidence Collar [UNCL], Active Well Coincidence Collar [AWCC]), can now be performed with higher precision in a fraction of the acquisition time. The system uses a high-flashpoint, non-hazardous scintillating fluid (EJ309) enabling their use in commercial nuclear facilities and achieves significantly enhanced performance and capabilities through the combination of extremely short gate times, adjustable energy detection threshold, real-time PSD electronics, and high-speed, FPGA-based data acquisition. Given the possible applications, this technology is also an excellent candidate for the replacement of select 3He-based systems. Comparisons to existing 3He-based active interrogation systems are presented where possible to provide a baseline performance reference. This paper will describe the laboratory experiments and associated modelling activities undertaken to develop and initially test the prototype detection system. © 2013 IEEE.

To simplify the excitation generation and data acquisition of the electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) system, a simple hardware design for ECT system was developed. The theory and hardware architecture of the ECT system were introduced. Under the control of DSP, the excitation and measure of entire system were controlled, the conversion of voltage signal from capacitance/voltage (CN) to analog/digital (A/D) was controlled. After demodulation and filter, the reconstruction images were achieved through communication circuit to computer by DSP. The experiments show that the real-time of system and the quality of reconstruction image are satisfactory, can meet the requirements of practical application.

Partial discharge is an important content of insulation monitoring of high-voltage power equipment, which generates high-frequency signals and real-time monitoring data is of great quantity. Simultaneous detection of multi-channel signals faces technical difficulty, and of high cost and poor reliability, it can also cause unnecessary waste of resources. In accordance with the characteristics and needs of partial discharge monitoring system at substation site, the concept of time-division multiplexing technology in communication technology is adopted into the multi-channel signal acquisition and measuring system, which using multiplexer MAX4638 and virtual instrument. The designed multiplexer for the partial discharge monitoring overcame several shortcomings, such as hardware resources consumption, poor reliability and high cost in multi-channel synchronous acquisition. By using of polling method to achieve one detection device for the time-sharing acquisition and processing of multiple devices or signals, this device can greatly enhance the on-line monitoring system economically and practically in the field application.

Automatic identification of the communication signal modulation mode is a hot topic of research in the signal processing field in recent years. It is an important part of electronic countermeasures, and also a rapidly developed field of signal analysis. Communication signal modulation recognition is widely used in signal confirmation, interference identification, radio listening, signal monitoring, as well as software-defined radio, satellite communications and other fields. This paper proposed a digital modulation signal automatic recognition algorithm for satellite communication applications,. The algorithm uses the higher order cumulants of modulating signal, combined with constellation map features, to classify the signal. It has invariance in signal amplitude and phase deviation, and inhibits the additive Gaussian noise at the same time. Compared with other identification algorithms, it has the characteristics of stability and wide application. Computer simulations show that, under the given data length and moderate SNR conditions, a higher recognition rate (> 95%) can be obtained. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

For the deep-hole drilling bit works in closed or half-closed condition and the cutting situation can not be observed and controlled directly, it brings a big challenge to monitor the cutting tools and the cutting process. To solve the problem, improved testing methods and data processing techniques were developed. A new condition monitoring method of deep-hole drilling based on multi-sensor data fusion was discussed in the paper. The signals of vibration and cutting force were collected when the condition of deep-hole drilling on stainless steel was normal and abnormal. Four eigenvectors were extracted on time-domain analysis and frequency-domain analysis of the signals. Then the combined four eigenvectors were sent to BP neural networks data fusioning center. The fusioning results indicate that cutting force signal can reflect the condition of drill bit better than vibration signal and multi-sensor data fusion is superior to single-sensor. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications Switzerland.

one of the most recently developed face recognition technique has utilized PSO-SVM, this method lacks in the initial phase of the PSO technique. That is in PSO;initially the populations are generated in random manner. Due to this random process, the population results may also be in random. Thus, it is not certain that this method will produce precise result. Hence to avoid this drawback, a modified face recognition method is proposed in this paper. Here, a new face recognition method based on Opposition based PSO with SVM (OPSO-SVM) is introduced. To accomplish the face recognition with our proposed OPSO-SVM, initially feature extraction process is carried out on the image database. In the feature extraction process, the efficient features are extracted and then given to the SVM training and testing process. In OPSO, the populations are generated in two ways: one is random population as same as the normal PSO technique and the other is opposition population, which is based on the random population values. The optimized parameters in SVM by OPSO efficiently perform the face recognition process. Two human face databases FERET and YALE are utilized to analyze the performance of our proposed OPSO-SVM technique and also this OPSO-SVM is compared with PSO-SVM and standard SVM techniques.

Electrocardiographic analysis plays an important role in clinical diagnosis. The pre-processing of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal consists of low-frequency baseline wander (BW) correction and high-frequency artifact noise reduction from the raw ECG signal. Baseline wander in ECG signal is the biggest hurdle in visualization of correct waveform and computerized detection of wave complexes based on threshold decision. This paper compares three methods of baseline wander removal, first using high pass filter, second FFT and third Wavelet transform. The ECG data is taken from standard MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database for simulation in Python 2.6. Simulation result shows that Wavelet transform removes BW completely. This paper also applies correction to BW of Pan & Tompkins QRS detection algorithm using Wavelet transform. This method helps in reducing the BW to a near zero value and inspecting the morphology of the wave components in ECG. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Compressive spectral imaging combines traditional spectral imaging method with new concept of compressive sensing thus has the advantages such as reducing acquisition data amount, realizing snapshot imaging for large field of view and increasing image signal-to-noise and its preliminary application effectiveness has been explored by early usage on the occasions such as high-speed imaging and fluorescent imaging. In this paper, the application potentiality for spatial coding compressive spectral imaging technique on rural survey is revealed. The physical model for spatial coding compressive spectral imaging is built on which its data flow procession is analyzed and its data reconstruction issue is concluded. The existing sparse reconstruction methods are reviewed thus specific module based on the two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding algorithm is built so as to execute the imaging data reconstruction. The simulating imaging experiment based on AVIRIS visible band data of a specific selected rural scene is carried out. The spatial identification and spectral featuring extraction capacity for different ground species are evaluated by visual judgment of both single-band image and spectral curve. The data fidelity evaluation parameters (RMSE and PSNR) are put forward so as to verify the data fidelity maintaining ability of this compressive imaging method quantitatively. The application potentiality of spatial coding compressive spectral imaging on rural survey, crop monitoring, vegetation inspection and further agricultural development demand is verified in this paper.

This paper addresses the problem of recognizing spoken Kannada words. The designed algorithm recognizes spoken Kannada words independent of speakers. The proposed method normalizes the original speech signal of every isolated word and extracts Linear-Predictive coding (LPC) coefficients, and converts them into Real Cepstrum Coefficient. These Real Cepstrum Coefficient values are subjected to dimensionality reduction through normal fit. These coefficients are used as the representatives of each spoken word. Euclidian distance measure is then used to compute the distance between the test samples to the model data in the database. The model datum in the database at a minimum distance is declared as the recognized word. For experimentation, we have used 294 unique Kannada words. Each of these words was recorded with 10 Speakers yielding 2,940 samples in total. Out of 10 speakers' data, 8 speakers' data i.e., 2,352 samples were used to compute the representative co-efficient for each word. Remaining 2 speakers' data along with re-recorded data of two speakers out of the 8 speakers is used for testing. Totally 2,352 signals are used for training and 1,176 signals are used for testing. The success rate of the proposed system- known speaker data is 98.29 % and unknown speaker data is 91.66 %. © 2013 Springer.
