The paper chooses the penetration impact signal as the research object. The matched filtering algorithm has been used to process the impact signal according to its frequency. On the analysis of the correlation algorithm and radix-4 FFT algorithm, the paper puts forward an implementation algorithm on FPGA of the fixed geometric structure addressing. By using fixed geometry addressing, pipeline design and block floating point structure, the data has the greater precision and dynamic range. The results show that the design is efficient, strong extensive and occupies less resource. It is an effective method to meet the high-speed digital signal processing requirements. © 2010 IEEE.

Grinding is a finishing process in machining operations, and the topology of the grinding tool is responsible for producing the desired result on the surface of the machined material The tool topology is modeled in the dressing process and precision is therefore extremely important This study presents a solution in the monitoring of the dressing process, using a digital signal processor (DSP) operating in real time to detect the optimal dressing moment To confirm the monitoring efficiency by DSP, the results were compared with those of a data acquisition system (DAQ) and offline processing The method employed here consisted of analyzing the acoustic emission and electrical power signal by applying the DPO and DPKS parameters The analysis of the results allowed us to conclude that the application of the DPO and DPKS parameters can be substituted by processing of the mean acoustic emission signal, thus reducing the computational effort

Noise in on-line hand written characters due to natural shaking of the hand and noise due to the process of digitization is inherent and this can lead to a degraded performance of character recognition system. In this paper, we propose a noise removal technique based on knotless spline. We first show that its noise removal property is independent of the amount of noise unlike the traditional Gaussian smoothing and further show that the noise removal can significantly enhance the performance of the character recognition algorithm. We specifically perform experiments with Devanagari data and show that the noise removal can enhance the performance of character recognition by as much as 10%. ©2010 IEEE.

Objective: Ascertain relations between brain responses elicited by stimuli of different modalities (visual and audiological). The stimuli used were based on some of the basic elements and concepts of the visual syntax, regarding to the Gestalt theory, and an audiological grammar based on the clinical protocols. Methods: We used Event-Related Potentials for assessing the brain's electrical response to visual and auditory stimuli. Materials: Biopac Systems Mp 150 - data acquisition unit "***";universal interface module "UIM100C";stimulator module "STM100C", two electroencephalogram amplifier modules "EEG100C";Ag-AgCL lead electrodes - AcqKnowledge 3.9.0 (software);SuperLab 4.0 (software) and MatlabR2008B. Results: Interim results presented in form of waveforms representing the average and standard deviation of all signals acquired for each type of stimulus. Conclusions: We can visually conclude that different modalities elicit different waveforms and certain stimuli have a more defined response than others.

This paper investigates the influence of physical stress on the physiological parameters of the cardiovascular system (CVS). The work aims at estimating the physiological variables such as the Heart Rate (HR), Blood Pressure (BP), Total Peripheral Resistance (TPR) and respiration in a subject underging physical workload. The core of the model was based on the model architecture previously developed by Luczak and his coworkers. Luczak's model was first reconstructed and the original published figure plots were used to identify some of the missing parameters via Genetic Algorithms (GA). The model was then modified using real experimental data extracted from healthy subjects who underwent two-session experiments of cyclic loading based physical stress. Neuro-Fuzzy models were elicited via the data in order to describe the nonlinear components of the model. The model response has also been significantly improved by including a dynamics-based component represented by 'time' as an extra input. The final model, as well as being of a 'hybrid' nature, was found to generalize better, to be more amenable to expansions and to also lead to better predictions.

Anterior cruciate ligament injury produces a pathologic kinematics of the limb that can lead to the evidence of a pivot-shift (PS) phenomenon. PS-test, specifically performed to highlighted this knee dynamic instability, is however difficult to quantify. From a clinical point of view is therefore mandatory to find a set of parameters able to quantitatively characterize PS phenomenon, thus distinguishing between pathologic and healthy knees. This study proposed a methodology able to automatically quantify PS phenomenon, analysing the signal recorded by means of a tri-axial accelerometer while executing PS-test itself. A signal template, which reproduced the 3D acceleration average trend while PS phenomenon occurs, was passed along the signal in order to recognise the presence of similar patterns. The recognition of the signal interesting share was based on the calculation of the Pearson's correlation coefficient between the template and the corresponding part of the windowed signal. The data acquisition concerning to the first 35 patients was used to testing the template;in this analysis we considered both the data relative to pathologic and healthy knee, as well as pre- and post-anaesthesia data, in order to evaluate the influence of active muscular resistance. The methodology followed had assured a recognition of PS repetitions with an accuracy of 96.7%, a sensitivity of 81.9% and a specificity of 99.3%;therefore can be considered a valid and easily computable method for the automatic screening of the acceleration signal during PS test. In the future this method will be uptake in order to quantify the possibility to discern between pathologic and healthy knee.

The wind profile estimations are the fundamental objective of the Indian MST radar with the received signal ranging from nearly 3.5-25 Km height. A widely accepted narrow band model is considered, for the analysis of the signal received. Though the received signal SNR is stronger at lower altitudes, as the height progresses the strength becomes feeble and the noise dominates the received signal. The classical Time-Frequency analysis is made on the received signal from different altitudes and observed that the zero Doppler influence is significant at higher altitudes along with the noise. A Hilbert transform based DC bias removal is proposed in contrast with the existing 3 point MA technique. To handle the noise, in particular at higher altitudes a wavelet based adaptive denoising is proposed and found satisfactorily for the spectral cleaning of the Doppler spectrum. The validation of the proposed algorithm is made with the GPS data. ©2010 IEEE.

Association rule mining is a well researched method for discovering interesting relations between variables in large databases. The first phase of association rule mining is the discovery of frequent itemsets which is a critical step and plays important role in many data mining tasks. The existing algorithms for finding frequent itemsets suffer from many problems related to memory and computational cost. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm ILLT (Indexed Limited Level Tree) which gets frequent itemsets efficiently in the given database without doing multiple scans and extensive computation. ILLT algorithm works in two phases. First, the transactional data is converted into three level compact tree structures. Then, these trees are scanned to discover the frequent itemsets. Experimental status shows the effectiveness of the algorithm in mining frequent itemsets. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents the development of a neuromuscular interface for an exoskeleton to assist the elbow joint. The interface uses electromyographic (EMG) signals obtained from the biceps and triceps to predict elbow flexion and extension movements. These movements occur in the sagittal plane and the effects of forearm weight have been incorporated. The interface uses a physiological-model-based approach to convert the EMG signals to a joint displacement and this is based on Hill-type muscle models that have traditionally been used in clinical applications or for diagnosing and managing neurological and orthopaedic conditions. Simulation results have been obtained for the performance of the interface on pre-recorded data. While the general trend of movement was correctly identified by the interface, further experiments are required to quantify the accuracy and determine real-time performance capabilities.

We present a mobile platform for body sensor networking based on a smartphone for lightweight signal processing of sensor mote data. The platform allows for local processing of data at both the sensor mote and smartphone levels, reducing the overhead of data transmission to remote services. We discuss how the smartphone platform not only provides the ability for wearable signal processing, but it allows for opportunistic sensing strategies, in which many of the onboard sensors and capabilities of modern smartphones may be collected and fused with body sensor data to provide environmental and social context.
