Neuroprosthetics can benefit greatly from area and power efficient signalprocessing circuitry suitable for implanting alongside miniature neural probes that interface to the nervous system. This work identifies an optimal VLSI architecture for computing a 1-dimensional multilevel discrete wavelet transform for multiple electrode channels simultaneously. The architecture is based on the lifting-scheme for wavelet computation and integer fixed-point precision for real-time processing under constraints imposed by implantability requirements. Two different computational node designs have been explored and compared to identify an optimal approach that minimizes power and chip area for a given number of levels and channels. Results demonstrate that on-chip computation is feasible prior to data transmission.

In recent years a great deal of research has been conducted in the area of scheduling DSP data flow graphs (DFG) onto heterogeneous multiprocessing systems. However, there is not yet much research conducted for designing the scheduling algorithms that consider the inter-processor communication delays. This paper presents a novel technique to obtain time and processor schedules for cyclic DFGs representing DSP algorithms onto a heterogeneous multiprocessor systems by taking into consideration the inter-processor communication delays. In the proposed technique the communication delay between a pair of nodes of the different type is treated as a non-computing node, whereas that between a pair of nodes of the same type is taken into account by re-adjusting the firing times of the appropriate nodes of DFG. A simulation is carried to illustrate the proposed technique by applying it to a second-order digital filter. The results show the proposed technique can produce optimal time and processor-allocation schedules.

This paper evaluates the outlier sensitivity of five independent component analysis (ICA) algorithms (FastICA, extended-Infomax, JADE, radical, and /spl beta/-divergence) using: (i) the Amari separation performance index, (ii) the optimum angle of rotation error, and (iii) the contrast function difference, in an outlier-contaminated mixture simulation. The Amari separation performance index has revealed a strong sensitivity of JADE and FastICA, using 3rd- and 4th- order nonlinearities, to outliers. However, the two contrast measures demonstrated conclusively that /spl beta/-divergence is the least outlier-sensitive algorithm, followed by Radical, FastICA (exponential and hyperbolic-tangent nonlinearities), extended-Infomax, JADE, and FastICA (3rd-and 4th-order nonlinearities) in an outlier-contaminated mixture of two uniformly distributed signals. The novelty of this paper is the development of an unbiased optimization-landscape environment for assessing outlier sensitivity, as well as the optimum angle of rotation error and the contrast function difference as promising new measures for assessing the outlier sensitivity of ICA algorithms.

In this paper we present a rapid-prototyping environment for functional verification and test of digital signalprocessing algorithms. The environment consists of a Virtex-II device on a PCI-card and an appropriate generic software backend which is used to pre- and post-process the data and to transfer it to the FPGA and pull the results from it. It is designed to meet real-time requirements by means of interleaving block-transfers to and from a large on-board memory. We use the system for the development and test of audio signalprocessing applications. The implementation and test of the gammatone-resynthesis algorithm is described as an exemplary algorithm that has been tested within the environment. The presented system is part of a software framework for rapid development of power optimized audio signalprocessing applications on behavioral level using library elements.

A new and challenging concept for optical storage is being developed, in which the information written on the disc has a two-dimensional characteristic, with the aim of realizing an increase of a factor of two in data density and a factor of ten in data rate over the current 3rd generation of optical storage (Blu-Ray Disc, BD). Experimental channel characterization provides insight into the magnitude of intersymbol interference, signal levels, modulation and noise distribution from the measured signal waveform. This information is used to evaluate the quality of the mastered discs, and provide feedback in the optimization process. It also yields essential input to the actual design of the signalprocessing solutions. The stages involved in characterizing the channel are downsampling and model fitting using a scalar diffraction model. The information gathered from channel characterization is demonstrated with experimental measurements from discs with an initial density of 1.4/spl times/BD using the same physical read-out system (blue laser and high-NA lens).
