Application studies in the domain of image and video processing systems indicate that up to 80% of the power and area cost in customized architectures for such data-dominant processing is due to storage and transfers for multi-dimensional (M-D) data. This paper has two main contributions. First, to reduce this dominant cost, we propose a formalized methodology of data-flow transformations which address the system-level storage organization. Secondly, we will demonstrate the usefulness of the stages in this novel approach based on realistic test-vehicles, i.e. crucial modules in a complex H.263 video decoder system for teleconferencing.

Several methods for testing the dynamic characteristics and the frequency response of analog and mixed-signal circuits include input excitations consisting of single or multiple sine waves, pulses, pseudo/white noise or normal operating signals. These techniques differ widely in the test measurement time and the dataprocessing time required for the frequency response characterization, as well as in their effectiveness for detecting errors. This paper will provide a comparative study of the different dynamic testing techniques in terms of the measurement and analysis times as well as test effectiveness.

Information theory indicates that coding efficiency can be improved by utilizing high-order entropy coding (HOEC). However, serious implementation difficulties limit the practical value of HOEC for grayscale image compression. In this paper we present a new approach, called binary-decomposed (BD) high-order entropy coding, that significantly reduces the complexity of the implementation and increases the accuracy in estimating the statistical model. In this approach a grayscale image is first decomposed into a group of binary sub-images, each corresponding to one of the gray levels. When HOEC is applied to these sub-images instead of the original image, the subsequent coding is made simpler and more accurate statistically.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging modality which provides information on in vivo physiological and metabolic functions in the human body. However, the long reconstruction time has prevented 3D PET from being practical. To make 3D PET feasible in a medical environment, in this paper, we propose an efficient parallel architecture for PET image reconstruction. The proposed parallel system is composed of four-connected processors with a novel interconnection network, called pairwise perfect shuffle (PPS). It may accomplish all types of data sharing activities involved in both filtered-backprojection and EM algorithms in O(logN) steps, which is optimal. Both proposed parallel architecture and reconstruction algorithms have been shown to be efficient on a transputer-based system.

A digital optical computer architecture consists of several stages, or slots, of optical arrays. Each slot can be viewed as a rectangular array of locations which are classified as vital and extraneous, depending on whether or not the location is on an optical signal path. A defective optical array can be used in a slot provided that the defective locations of the array do not coincide with the vital locations of the slot. The problem of low manufacturing yield of optical arrays can be alleviated by utilizing defective arrays that are consistent with slots. The mapping of arrays to slots so as to maximize the number of machines that can be assembled is a difficult discrete optimization problem. This is because a larger array can become consistent to a slot through transformations such as translation and rotation. We propose the use of evolutionary programming for the assembly of optical computers. Our experimental results indicate that a genetic algorithm is a powerful technique to search the vast solution space efficiently.

We address in this paper the problem of defining fuzzy relationships between objects for pattern recognition purposes. We distinguish two kinds of spatial relationships. Some of them are well defined if the objects are crisp, like adjacency, inclusion or other set relationships. But since they are highly sensitive to errors or imprecision in segmentation, more useful measures can be obtained by fuzzifying these concepts. We define such measures using fuzzification principles or direct translation of binary equations into fuzzy ones. Other relationships are inherently vague concepts, like relative position. Fuzzy definitions of such relationships are then more consistent than crisp ones. We propose definitions of relative position between crisp or fuzzy objects, and illustrate them on buildings in aerial images.
