The authors began operating the Mobile Communication Integrated Operation System (MIGS) in 1992; this is an operation system capable of monitoring and controlling the status of various network facilities which constitute the mobile communication network and monitoring the status of services being provided on the network. In the present paper the authors present a new system, the "Mobile Transit Network Traffic Monitoring System", which performs monitoring and accumulating real time traffic data for transit lines among switches in the mobile communication network which incorporates functions to reflect those data in various business operations. System sharing with MIGS is strived for and the new system is positioned as a subsystem of MIGS. This system monitors various call processingsignals running in the common channel signaling network to execute call connections among switches, and thus comprehends the line operating status among all switches by each line. Based on the accumulated data, the system calculates the traffic data of transit lines. The new system features are described.< >

An additive fuzzy system can control the throttle of cars in single lane platoons. The system used fuzzy controllers for velocity control and gap control. Fuzzy controllers create, maintain, and divide platoons on the highway. Each car's controller uses data from its car and the car in front of it. Cars drop back during platoon maneuvers to avoid the "slinky effect" of tightly coupled platoons. Some car and engine types need their own fuzzy rules and sets. A hybrid neural fuzzy system can learn the fuzzy rules and sets from input-output data. The authors compute new fuzzy rules and sets for a truck velocity controller. The learned system controls the velocity of the truck with no overshoot or slow response. The authors tested the fuzzy gap controller first with a car model and then with a real car on highway I-15 in California. Each car's controller used data only from sensors on the car. The authors used this controller to drive the "smart" car on the highway in a two-car platoon.< >

Code division multiple access (CDMA) is being proposed as a powerful spectrum sharing technique. Rejection of multiple access interference (MAI) is achieved by the cross-correlation properties of the selected code family. However, before the receiver has acquired synchronism to the desired sequence, the presence of interference is a major impairment. It has been argued that the performance of the acquisition sub-system in CDMA systems may limit the multiple access capacity more than error probability specifications. Therefore, analysis of the acquisition of synchronism process in CDMA systems must take into account the effect of MAI. In this work the performance of a non-coherent straight serial search acquisition sub-system has been evaluated in the presence of interference from other users, data modulation and noise. For this purpose, an analytical approach has been used, which allows the characterization of the effects of the interfering sequences on the acquisition process without the adoption of a Gaussian approximation. Several configurations have been analysed, and their performance obtained in terms of mean time to acquisition and overall probability of detection.< >

The impact of optical fiber sensor technology and optical fiber amplifier technology in acoustic sensor systems is theoretically examined. An attractive feature of the system architecture studied is the fact that a majority of the complex optical components and electrical signalprocessing are located on the dry-end (land or ship) thus reducing overall system cost and enhancing upgradability. Calculated results are presented for a hybrid time-division and wavelength division multiplexed architecture employing fiber Bragg gratings. The multiplexing scheme, optical schematic, state-of-polarization effects, and noise terms are described.

In this paper, we investigate the use of the advanced fiber optic multiple-access networks in future high-performance commercial aircrafts to support real time on-board flight control, sensing, voice communications, and TV distributions. Novel tunable optical code division multiple-access (OCDMA) networks using prime-code sequences are designed, which can be quickly programmed to generate the required OCDMA sequences. Using the newly proposed OCDMA technique can efficiently build high-speed sensor data distribution networks which can guarantee parallel data communications and multiple connections to support real-time sensor dataprocessing and distributed control. Due to the channel independence and protocol transparence of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), the WDM-based hybrid multiple- access techniques are very attractive to future avionics systems integration, which can achieve high communication efficiency and network utilization.

Computer programs for graphing and analyzing time series data are widely available. For large data analysis applications, however, the analyst may invest a great deal of time navigating an ocean of data in order to find the relevant and interesting pieces. By making this process of discovery easier we can improve the productivity of the analyst. In this paper we describe a data analysis system composed of an eclectic combination of pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and digital signalprocessing with the goal of providing some of the right tools. The machine is used to accept abstract descriptions of interesting or anomalous data and then to bring that data quickly into the user interface. The same tools can screen large datasets in the analyst's absence. The human analyst spends less time wading through graphs and numbers and more time answering the question of the day. Our goal is to empower the analyst by providing a higher-level language with which to manipulate, visualize, and restructure the semantic concepts of the domain.

There is an increasing interest in massive optical interconnection networks for the incorporation of communication and signalprocessing systems. Reconfigurable optical interconnection systems can become important for a wide range of applications, including parallel optoelectronic computing. The simulated annealing algorithm is used to solve a complex optimization problem. The algorithm can find the state which is the global energy minimum. By applying the SA algorithm, the optical general interconnection for N input and output array can be achieved by two binary phase masks each with NxN parameters. This greatly simplifies the optical system and makes the proposed system feasible.
