In this paper we describe exact and heuristic algorithms for the comparison of 3d structures via their contact maps. Given two contact maps, we consider the problem of finding the optimal sequence-order dependent and sequence order independent alignments. We describe an integerprogramming formulation of the problems along with a Lagrangian relaxation yielding stronger bounds than previous approaches. This relaxation is used to drive both a greedy heuristic capable of finding near-optimal solutions and an exact branch-and-bound algorithm. We report computational results for an application of our model to the problem of aligning 3d structures of folded proteins from the Protein data Bank.

Over the last few years, a strong interest in methods for feature-based3d similarity search has arisen, and a growing number of competing algorithms for content-based retrieval of 3d objects have been proposed. We present an extensive experimental evaluation of the retrieval effectiveness and efficiency of a large part of the current state-of-the-art feature-based methods for 3d similarity search, giving a contrasting assessment of the different approaches.

An Autostereoscopic 3d viewing system that operates on the principles of Integral Photography-IP provides a unique sense of depth, full parallax and multi-view functionality. The inherent redundancy of these images results into great amounts of data that should be efficiently coded for transmission or storage operations. In this communication a method for efficient coding of such images is presented, targeting to 3d imaging but video applications. The method is based on common techniques broadly used in image compression and properly adjusted in order to take advantage of the spatial redundancies of IP images. The generality and flexibility of the proposed approach along with the stability for a wide range of bit rates constitutes the basic characteristics of the technique. The proposed technique can be easily realized in software or hardware for computer based or standalone applications.

In this paper a gesture recognition system using 3ddata is described. The system relies on a novel 3d sensor that generates a dense range image of the scene. The main novelty of the proposed system, with respect to other 3d gesture recognition techniques, is the capability for robust recognition of complex hand postures such as those encountered in sign language alphabets. This is achieved by, explicitly employing 3d hand features. Moreover the proposed approach does not rely on colour information, and guarantees robust segmentation of the hand under various illumination conditions, and content of the scene. Several novel 3d image analysis algorithms are presented covering the complete processing chain: 3d image acquisition, arm segmentation, hand-forearm segmentation, hand pose estimation, 3d feature extraction, and gesture classification. The proposed system is tested in an application scenario involving the recognition of sign-language postures.

Archaeology is a destructive process in which accurate anddetailed recording of a site is imperative. As a site is exposed, documentation is required in order to recreate and understand the site,in context. We have developed a 3d modeling pipeline that can assist archaeologists in the documentation effort by building rich, geometrically and photometrically accurate 3d models of the site. The modeling effort begins with data acquisition (images, range scans, GIS data, and video) and ends with the use of a sophisticatedvisualization tool that can be used by researchers to explore and understand the site. The pipeline includes new methods for shadow-based registration of 2d images and temporal change detection. Our multimodal augmented reality system allows users wearing head-tracked, see-through, head-worn displays to visualize the site model and associated archaeological artifacts, and to interact with them using speech and gesture.

In this paper, we propose an efficient low complexity geometry compression scheme for densely sampled irregular 3d meshes. This scheme is based on 3d multiresolution analysis (3ddiscrete Wavelet Transform) and includes a model-based bit allocation process across the wavelet subbands. Coordinates of 3d wavelet coefficients are processed separately and statistically modeled by a generalized Gaussian distribution. This permits an efficient allocation even at low bitrate with very low complexity. Moreover, we introduce predictive geometry coding of LF subbands by taking in account the correlation of the coarsest level coefficients. Finally, we use EBCOT coder to efficiently encode the quantized coefficients.

In this paper a novel method for 3d model content-based search and retrieval based on the 3d Radon Transform and a querying-by-3d-model approach, is presented. descriptors are extracted using the 3d Radon Transform and applying a set of functionals on the transform coefficients. Similarity measures are then created for the extracteddescriptors and introduced into a 3d model-matching algorithm. This results to a very fast and accurate matching method. Experiments were performed using two different databases and comparing the proposed method with others. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be used for 3d model search and retrieval in a highly efficient manner.

Because of the convenience of a text-based format 3d content is often published in form of a gzipped file that contains an ASCII description of the scene graph. While compressed image, audio, and video data is kept in separate binary files, polygon meshes and interpolators are usually included uncompressed into the ASCII description, as there is no widely-accepted standard for such data. In this paper we show how to use compressed polygon meshes and compressed interpolators within a purely textbased format. Our scheme codes these data-heavy nodes as ASCII strings that compress well with standard gzip compression. Specifically we demonstrate the efficiency of this technique on a sparse scene composed of many small polygon meshes. While typical for 3d content on the Web, such scenes tend to be more difficult to compress.

In this paper we describe a system that can build3d animal models and synthesize animations in 3d virtual environments. The model is constructed by 2d images captured by specific views. The animation is synthesised by using physical motion models of the animal and tracking data from image sequences. Finally, the user selects some points of the 3d world and a smooth and safe motion path, which passes by these points, is created. The main assumption of the 3d modelling is that the animal could be divided into parts whose normal sections are ellipses. Joints and angles between skeleton points are used in order to decrease models complexity. Using the above methodology, a snake, a lizard and a goat are reconstructed.
