If several laboratories work in the same field and need to cooperate, it is necessary to exchange and mutually compare their computer results. The quick way to solve this problem is to unite their file formats (if it is practicable) or to install new software systems, which are data or file format compatible. A much better solution is to use only one common system. This article describes the architecture of a new client-server system, which offers possibilities of effective cooperation for laboratories doing the research in the field of the spatial organization of human genome. However, the system design is determined mainly by optical microscopy principles and therefore the system can easily be modified for use in other applications or environments. The most pressing problem during the system design was how to share and process large 3d image data in client-server architecture.

Many factors, such as the number of vertices and the resolution of texture, can affect the display quality of 3d objects. When the resources of a graphics system are not sufficient to render the ideal image, degradation is inevitable. It is therefore important to study how individual factors will affect the overall quality, and how the degradation can be controlled given limited resources. In this paper, the essential factors determining the display quality are reviewed. We provide more details on our earlier presentation [14] on integrating two important ones, resolution of texture and resolution of mesh, to model a perceptual metric. We then present a preliminary study of the reliability of the perceptual experiments. Experiments demonstrate that the reliability of our user evaluations to be quite high. Finally, we also propose an approach for reducing user fatigue while performing perceptual quality evaluations.

General information about a class of objects, such as human faces or teeth, can help to solve the otherwise ill-posed problem of reconstructing a complete surface from sparse 3d feature points or 2d projections of points. We present a technique that uses a vector space representation of shape (3d Morphable Model) to infer missing vertex coordinates. Regularization derived from a statistical approach makes the system stable and robust with respect to noise by computing the optimal tradeoff between fitting quality and plausibility. We present a direct, non-iterative algorithm to calculate this optimum efficiently, and a method for simultaneously compensating unknown rigid transformations. The system is applied and evaluated in two different fields: (1) reconstruction of 3d faces at unknown orientations from 2d feature points at interactive rates, and (2) restoration of missing surface regions of teeth for CAd-CAM production of dental inlays and other medical applications.

This paper presents a framework for dynamic 3d shape reconstruction from multi-viewpoint images using a deformable mesh model. With our method, we can obtain 3d shape and 3d motion of the object simultaneously. We represent the shape by a surface mesh model and the motion by translations of its vertices, i.e., deformation. Thus global and local topological structure of the mesh are preserved from frame to frame. This helps us to analyse the motion of the object, to compress the 3d data, and so on. Our model deforms its shape so as to satisfy several constraints. This constraint-based deformation provides a computational framework to integrate several reconstruction cues such as surface texture, silhouette, and motion flow observed in multi-viewpoint images.

View-based 3d video streaming requires the compression and transmission of depth maps along with the video sequence. The requirements for representing these depth maps include moderately, high compression, preservation of depth discontinuities, low complexity decoding, and to be in a form that is suitable for real-time rendering using graphics cards. This motivates a mesh-based representation for the depth map. We adapt a mesh generation algorithm used in real-time height field rendering for depth map representation and produce a regular mesh for each depth map. Then we propose a compression technique that encodes the triangulated depth map as a set of single bit enabled flags that mark the split of triangles, and depth values at the vertices with Huffman code. By coding the vertices in the rendering order, we achieve depth map decoding and striped triangles for OpenGL based rendering in one loop, thus greatly, reducing the complexity, at the rendering end.

The purpose of this paper is to explore three-dimensional (3d) visualization methods of flow unit in oil block. Using the theory and methods of petroleum geology, reservoir sedimentology, mathematical geology, computer graphics, through analyzing special blocks of oil field and block division into small layers, the physical parameters of reservoir were studied about the regularity of their inherent law, the comprehensive judgment and clustering method to determine the division of flow units were proposed. A geological volume visualization model and the corresponding mathematical model to generate field data for visualization were built, as well as modeling for line, surface and irregular geological volume in the process of flow units visualization. The 3d visualization of flow units was realized via the computer programming sampled the Gao104-5 blocks data.

This paper presents a new acquisition method for 3d laser scanners that combines imaging, fast geometrical object tracking, and automatic pose estimation to register range profiles of freely moving objects. The method was developed to solve the constraint of rigidity between free-moving objects and a 3d scanner while preserving the accuracy of the range measurements. Rigidity constraint imposes that a 3d scanner or any external positioning devices must be perfectly stable relative to the object during scanning. This is often impossible for moving structures such as when using scaffolding, industrial conveyers, or robotic arms. The method starts by creating a rough, partial, and distorted estimate of the model of the object from an initial subset of sparse range data. Then, it recursively improves and refines the model by adding new range information. In parallel, real-time tracking of the object is performed to center the scan on the object. A high-resolution and accurate 3d model of a free-floating object, and real-time tracking of its position is obtained.

In this paper, we present an algorithm to combine edge information from stereo-derived depth maps with edges from the original intensity/color image to improve the contour detection in images of natural scenes. After computing the disparity map, we generate a so-called "edge combination image", which relies on those edges of the original image that are also present in the stereo map. We describe an algorithm to identify corresponding intensity and depth edges, which are usually slightly displaced due to non-perfect stereo reconstruction. Our experiments demonstrate how the proposed edge combination approach can be used in conjunction with an active contours algorithm to achieve better segmentation results.

One of the main problems of 3d imaging in optical microscopy is unisotropic optical resolution of acquired 3d data. For instance in confocal laser scanning microscopy, axial resolution is 2-3 times worse than the lateral one. A sophisticated solution of this problem is so-called micro axial tomography that provides a good means for microscopic image acquisition of cells or subcellular components like cell nuclei with an improved resolution achieved by object tilting and acquisition of a series of mutually tilted 3d image data. Since the very early developments of micro axial tomography a considerable drawback of this method was a complicated image acquisition and processing procedure that requires much operator time. In order to solve this problem advanced microscopy and automated computer image acquisition and analysis were brought together. Special software that drives all hardware components required for automated micro axial tomography was developed. It performs multi-view 3d image acquisition as well as related image processing.

In this paper, we develop a set of data processing algorithms for generating textured facade meshes of cities from a series of vertical 2d surface scans, obtained by a laser scanner while driving on public roads under normal traffic conditions. These processing steps are needed to cope with imperfections and non-idealities inherent in laser scanning systems such as occlusions and reflections from glass surfaces. The driven path is cut into easy-to-handle quasi-linear segments with approximately straight driving direction. The vertical scans in each segment are recorded in a sequential topological order, and are transformed into a depth image;if available, additional 3d data from other modalities such as stereo vision is also taken into consideration. dominant building structures are detected in the depth images, and points are classified into foreground and background layers. Large holes in the background layer, caused by occlusion from foreground layer objects, are filled in by planar or horizontal interpolation. The depth image is further processed by removing isolated points and filling remaining small holes, to obtain a textured surface mesh. We apply the above steps to a large set of data with several million 3d points, and show photorealistic texture mapped 3d models.
