Computer Aided Surgery (CAS) systems help surgeons in planning the operation accurately, resulting in costs reducing, clinical outcome improving and enhancing of the health care delivery efficiency. This paper describes the Hip-Op system, which is a novel software for the preoperative planning of total hip replacement. The software uses a fully, three-dimensional (3d) internal representation of the patient anatomy, derived from Computed Tomography data, The user interface is based on an innovative visualization paradigm, called Multimodal display, and represents the anatomical objects by means of multiple views, which are familiar to medical professionals. Besides the original CT slices, also two synthetically generated radiographs are available, as well as a surface rendering view The surgeon can load prosthetic models into the planning software environment, selecting them from those available in the implant database. Then he can perform a virtual surgery procedure in order to plan the proper position and orientation of the prosthesis within the host femur Analysis modules a low to evaluate the planning from a biomechanical point of view. The main features of VENSIS, a VENUS subsurface ionosphere radar sounder, are discussed. According to the models of the Venus crust composition, geometric structure and ionosphere environment, the expected subsurface and ionosphere sounding performance are also discussed. VENSIS is expected to complement Magellan data of the surface and subsurface of Venus by using long wavelength sounding radar to probe the 3th dimension of the Venusian crust. Taking into account the previous considerations, the implementation time constraint and the possibility of re-use of spare MARSIS electronic circuitry, the reuse of MARSIS in the Venus Express mission in particular during nightside and high solar zenith angles operations is also suggested.

Experimental structure analysis of biological molecules (e.g, proteins) or macromolecular complexes (e.g, viruses) can be used to generate three-dimensional density maps of these entities. Such a density map can be viewed as a three-dimensional gray-scale image where space is subdivided in voxels of a given size. The focus of this paper is the analysis of virus density maps. The hull of a virus consists of many copies of one or several different proteins. An important tool for the study of viruses is cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), a technique with insufficient resolution to directly determine the arrangement of the proteins in the virus. We therefore created a tool that locates proteins in the three-dimensional density map of a virus. The goal is to fully determine the locations and orientations of the protein(s) in the virus given the virus' three-dimensional density map and a database of density maps of one or more protein candidates.

Three-dimensional face registration is a critical step in 3d face recognition. This paper presents an automatic registration method for frontal 3d face data. In our method, a unified coordinate system is created for each face according to the spatial relationships among its Symmetry Plane, nose tip point and nose bridge point. For evaluating the performance of our registration method, manually marked fiducial points are used for comparison. Extensive localization displacement and face verification experiments have been performed on the FRGC benchmark 3d face dataset to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed automatic registration method. Preliminary experiment results show that this approach can yield very accurate registration results with least human intervention. ©2008 IEEE.

The absence of common image storage, processing and visualisation approaches is a very serious problem of the collaboration between optical microscopy laboratories. The results produced by individual groups are therefore often not comparable. Even a simple visualisation of image data acquired in a different laboratory is often time-consuming because of the non-existence of a common 3d image file format. In this paper we present a solution to these problems for the specific task of acquisition, storage, processing and visualisation of 3d image data of fluorescently stained genetic material used in the research of the spatial organisation of human genome. We have developed a special software system based on the client/server architecture that enables the collaboration of laboratories active in this field. Each laboratory acquires the 3d image data using its own microscopes but stores them together with a detailed description of the samples on a central high-performance multi-processor UNIX server that acts as a file server, database server and image analysis server that accepts orders from individual clients. The requested parts of image data as well as image analysis results are sent back to the clients via Internet. In order to provide high computational power the server was equipped with the fastest processors available and the whole network architecture has been optimised for speed.

In this paper, we describe about wavelet coding method for geometry data structured on a triangular lattice. Efficient representations of 3-d object shape and its texture data have attracted wide attention for transmission of computer graphics data and for interactive design in manufacturing. Polygonal mesh data, which consists of connectivity information, geometry data and texture data, are often used for representing 3-d object in many applications. We propose a compression method for polygonal mesh data by structuring its connectivity data and geometry data on a triangular lattice. The structured geometry data is compressed by applying a 2-d wavelet coding method. Me obtain the wavelet coefficients by applying shape-adaptive wavelet transform to the structured geometry data. By, defining the parent-children dependencies as the set of wavelet coefficients from different bands that represent the same spatial region in triangular lattice, and the wavelet coefficients in spatial tree are pruned optimally based on the rate-distortion properties of the geometry data. Comparison of proposed wavelet coding with other coding scheme for polygonal mesh data shows that the proposed wavelet coding achieves better coding efficiency than other scheme adopted in the MPEG-4 standard.

The aim of this study is the estimation of the three dimensional strain occurring in soft biological tissues under compressive forces, through the processing of radiofrequency ultrasound volumes. This work is one of the first attempts to deal with the 3d problem of tissue motion under load. In this article, we propose a new adaptive and iterative numerical model, allowing full-resolved strain parameters estimation. This model is based on an objective function minimization with linear inequalities constraints. An original technique of adaptive displacement of the region of study is also considered. Preliminary tests are performed on a volume of ultrasound data obtained from a 3d numerical phantom. Axial, lateral, and elevational displacements and axial strain fields are estimated, and compared with the theory.

This paper presents a fast and robust method to precisely segment and locate bore holes of 4 to 50mm diameter The task is solved by a robot moving a compact triangulation scanning sensor to all sides of the object and scanning the bore holes. Exploiting the knowledge about the expected bore diameter and bore pose makes it possible to develop highly robust algorithms for an industrial application. Sparse data of the bore hole is sufficient to segment the bore independent of bore hole chamfer type using a robust normal vector fit and a classification based on the Gaussian image. A sequential algorithm to fit the bore cylinder makes it possible to calculate the bore pose in less than 1 second. Experiments demonstrate that 120 degrees of the bore hole surface are sufficient for robust localization within 0.3mm and 0.5 degrees even in the presence of ghost points and notches in the bore holes.

This paper presents a framework for speech-driven synthesis of real faces from a corpus of 3d video of a person of dynamic 3d face shape and speaking. Video-rate capture of colour appearance provides the basis for a visual speech synthesis model. A displacement map representation combines face shape and colour into a 3d video. This representation is used to efficiently register and integrate shape and colour information captured from multiple views. To allow visual speech synthesis viseme primitives are identified from the corpus using automatic speech recognition. A novel non-rigid alignment algorithm is introduced to estimate dense correspondence between 3d face shape and appearance for different visemes. The registered displacement map representation together with a novel optical flow optimisation using both shape and colour enables accurate and efficient non-rigid alignment. Face synthesis from speech is performed by concatenation of the corresponding viseme sequence using the non-rigid correspondence to reproduce both 3d face shape and colour appearance. Concatenative synthesis reproduces both viseme timing and co-articulation. Face capture and synthesis has been perA formed for a database of 51 people. Results demonstrate A synthesis of 3d visual speech animation with a quality comA parable to the captured video of a person.

This paper presents a new method for registering computer tomography (CT) volumetric data of human bone structures relative to observations made at different times. The system we advance was tested with different kinds of CT data sets. In this paper we report on some representative experimental results obtained with the CT data of the hip bones of a patient prior to and after prosthetic surgery aimed at the reconstruction of the hip articulation. The method works with rigid data having arbitrary relative position and orientation and proves to be robust with respect to CT acquisition noise and with respect to the segmentation technique adopted to select the region of interest for registration. The method is capable of registering correctly data sets taken from the same articulation and whose components have undergone small relative displacements. The method is also amenable to registration of heteregeneous kinds of volumetric data, e.g., CT scans and Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI) scans, which show different characteristics in correspondence to the same organic structure.
