The transmission and storage of large amounts of triangle and vertex geometry data are required for rendering geometrically detailed 3d meshes. This paper proposes a novel vertex encoding algorithm using VQ with a region growing based k-ring prediction scheme. during the encoding process, the parameter k at the vertex to be encoded is estimated by the error vectors of the preceding encoded vertices, and then the adaptive prediction rule of the vertex is computed according to k. Experiment results show that, compared with the vertex encoding algorithm based on the conventional parallelogram prediction, the proposed algorithm achieves a higher encoding quality at the same bit rate. ©2010 IEEE.

Remote visualization of medical data is a very attractive alternative to increased mobility, allowing volumetric data to be accessed even in devices with low processing capability. However, the amount of simultaneous accesses and the bandwidth available are natural bottlenecks for any solution in this field. This paper presents a methodology to evaluate 3d volumetric rendering client-servers systems with the goal of determining the maximum load of a specific system based on Quality of Service (QoS). With such input in mind, a system architect could project systems with better cost-benefit ratio, or even design a cloud system that predicts and rents servers based on the number of service requests. In order to check the viability of the methodology, a stress test was conducted in a client-server system developed to visualize Computed Tomography (CT) scans. Results have shown that it could handle at least 20 simultaneous remote visualizations, even in scenarios with low bandwidth, finding its upper limit when dealing with around 30 simultaneous visualizations.

This work describes a method for filling holes in a 3d mesh based on 2d image restoration algorithms. Since these algorithms need an image as input, the first stage of the method concerns a 3d to 2d transformation. By projecting the 3d surface onto a squared plane, a 2d image is generated in such a way that the depth information is stored in each grid. The image restoration algorithms are applied to it. Once the image has been repaired, the inverse transformation 2d to 3d is performed and the repaired 3d surface recovered. To test the method, artificial holes have been generated on a set of 3d surfaces. The goodness of the results has been measured from the comparison between the 3d original surfaces and the 3d repaired ones. An evaluation with commercial software has been carried out to show the validity of the method. The image restoration algorithms have been applied to 3d cultural heritage modeling with good results. Specifically, sculptures of the collection from the National Museum of Roman Art in Spain have been reconstructed. © 2008 Georgia Institute of Technology.

Solving the correspondence problem is the most essential task for multiview reconstruction techniques, yet finding unique correspondences between multiple views is impossible at some points, due to such problems as occlusions and ambiguities. We have developed a closed-form solution through constructive geometry for a special case of the structure-from-motion (SfM) problem with four rigidly moving points. This solution allows the 3-d position of a point on a moving object to be computed without having to find the correspondence between its projections on the image planes of multiple views, given its projected 2-d motion vector on an image plane and 3-d information of three other points. With this method we do not have to depend entirely on stereo/multiview feature correspondences in reconstructing 3-d objects, hence easing those problems caused by occlusions and ambiguities. © 2004 IEEE.

We describe the goals of the ATTEST project, which started in March 2002 as part of the Information Society Technologies (IST) programme, sponsored by the European Commission. In the 2-year project, several industrial and academic partners cooperate towards a flexible, 2d-compatible and commercially feasible 3d-TV system-for broadcast environments. An entire 3d-video chain will be developed. We discuss the goals for content creation, coding, transmission, display and the central role that human 3d perception research will play in optimizing the entire chain. The goals include the development of a new 3d camera, algorithms to convert existing 2d-video material into 3d, a 2d-compatible coding and transmission scheme for 3d video using MPEG-2/4/7, and two new autostereoscopic displays. With the combination of industrial and academic partners and the technological progress obtained from earlier 3d projects, we expect to achieve the ATTEST goal of developing the first commercially feasible European 3d-TV broadcast system. © 2002 IEEE.

A novel contour-based 3d terrain matching method is presented in this paper. In the method, Iso-Elevation Contour Map (IECM), a compact feature-based representation, is proposed to represent the reference dEM and recovered dEM (REM) from real-time data to convert 3d terrain matching to contour-based matching. In the contour-based matching, a normalized wavelet descriptor, which is invariant to 2d rigid transformation, is employed to describe contours. A very fast contour-matching algorithm based on normalized wavelet descriptor is presented. The proposed matching method is robust and effective computation, and can achieve high location accuracy.

Understanding the impact of noise and incomplete data is a critical need for using atom probe tomography effectively. Although many tools and techniques have been developed to address this problem, visualization of the raw data remains an important part of this process. In this paper, we present two contributions to the visualization of data acquired through atom probe tomography. First, we describe the application of a rendering technique, ray cast spherical impostors, that enables the interactive rendering of large numbers (as large as 10 million plus) of pixel perfect, lit spheres representing individual atoms. This technique is made possible by the use of a consumer level graphics processing unit (CPU), and it yields an order of magnitude improvement both in render quality and speed over techniques previously used to render spherical glyphs in this domain. Second, we present an interactive tool that allows the user to mask, filter, and colorize the data in real time to help them understand and visualize a precise subset and properties of the raw data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our tool through benchmarks and an example that shows how the ability to interactively render large numbers of spheres, combined with the use of filters and masks, leads to improved understanding of the three-dimensional (3d) and incomplete nature of atom probe data This improvement arises from the ability of lit spheres to more effectively show the 3d position and the local spatial distribution of individual atoms than what is possible with point or isosurface renderings. The techniques described in this paper serve to introduce new rendering and interaction techniques that have only recently become practical as well as new ways of interactively exploring the raw data (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Capture of dynamic events is an active research area today. Capturing the 2 1/2 d geometric structure and photometric appearance of dynamic scenes finds applications in 3d tele-conferencing systems, 3dTV etc. The captured "depth movies" contain aligned sequences of depth maps and textures and are often streamed to a distant location for immersive viewing. The depth maps are heavy and need efficient compression schemes. In this paper, we present a scheme to compress depth movies of human actors using a parametric proxy model for the underlying action. We use a generic articulated human model as the proxy and the various joint angles as its parameters for each time instant to represent a common prediction of the scene structure. The difference or residue between the captured depth and the depth of the proxy represents the scene to exploit spatial coherence. differences in residues across time are used to exploit temporal coherence. Intra-frame coded frames and difference-coded frames provide random access and high compression. We show results on several synthetic and real actions to demonstrate the compression ratio and resulting quality using a depth-based rendering of the decoded scene. © 2008 Georgia Institute of Technology.

Hyperspectral sounder data is a particular class of data that requires high accuracy for useful retrieval of atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles, surface characteristics, cloud properties, and trace gas information. Therefore compression of these data sets is better to be lossless or near lossless. The next-generation NOAA/NESdIS GOES-R hyperspectral sounder, now referred to as the HES (Hyperspectral Environmental Suite), will have hyperspectral resolution (over one thousand channels with spectral widths on the order of 0.5 wavenumber) and high spatial resolution (less than 10 km). Given the large volume of three-dimensional hyperspectral sounder data that will be generated by the HES instrument, the use of robust data compression techniques will be beneficial to data transfer and archive. In this paper, we study lossless data compression for the HES using 3d integer wavelet transforms via the lifting schemes. The wavelet coefficients are then processed with the 3d embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) algorithm followed by context-based arithmetic coding. We extend the 3d EZW scheme to take on any size of 3d satellite data, each of whose dimensions need not be divisible by 2(N), where N is the levels of the wavelet decomposition being performed. The compression ratios of various kinds of wavelet transforms are presented along with a comparison with the JPEG2000 codec.

In Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC), radar and communications functionalities share the same radio channel and radio resources. This sharing allows the deployment of both functionalities at a low cost without additional frequency bands and infrastructure. Because radar and communications have different radio resource requirements, new radio access and radio resource management (RRM) methods are required in a shared system. To develop and evaluate new ISAC methods, this paper presents a modular simulation framework for the system level and link level of ISAC networks. The main components of the framework are the data storage, the simulators, and the algorithms. This paper presents the framework's architecture, the integrated simulation models for channel and signal simulation, and the integrated algorithms for multiple radar target localization and data transmission.
