In this paper, a system for the visualization and entry of 3d stratigraphic layers into a new Geographic Information System (GIS) based on the varying and sometimes incomplete records of the field archaeologist is presented. This paper presents a computer-based system that allows for incomplete and ambiguous data, indicating problems associated with this entry and shows how inaccuracies are represented so that later misinterpretation is avoided.

3d medical images represent tremendous amounts of data. Grid technologies offer large anddistributed computing power suited to medical images analysis. However, interactive programs with user supervision are made difficult on a grid architecture due to the remote program execution. In this paper we propose a new framework for interactive execution of remote applications dealing with large 3d medical data sets. Our solution is both efficient and easy to use from the user point of view.

We present a method for the reconstruction of a 3d real object from a sequence of high-definition images. We combine two different procedures: a shape from silhouette technique which provides a coarse 3d initial model followed by a multi-stereo carving technique. We propose a fast but accurate method for the estimation of the carving depth at each vertex of the 3d mesh. The quality of the final textured3d reconstruction models allows us to validate the method.

In this paper we describe a new system for the 3d reconstruction anddistribution on the Internet of models for vessel structures. The system is specifically designed to support measurements of medical interest. We describe 2d and3d segmentation methods implemented and the procedure used to build interactive VRML97 models. The experimental section presents a comparison between segmentation methods, and a first application to surgical planning for endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The general concept of virtual reality system supported by data gathered by means of optical 3d shape measurement system is presented. The methodology of data filtering, coding and streaming in order to perform real-time transmission of 3ddata into virtual reality is given. The concept of a virtual camera, as the mean for interactive object visualisation in VR environment is introduced. The details of data coding and filtering methods are given and their algorithmic implementation is described. The directions of future works focused on full implementation of the concept of hybrid experimental-numerical VR systems are discussed.

Yet, with the exception of games and some E-commerce applications, the take-up of 3d remains slow. This paper surveys current issues related to the potential of 3d for IST applications and gives an overview of activities most relevant to 3d research. The EU's 6/sup th/ Framework Programme is also briefly discussed and orientations for the integration of imaging and3d research are proposed.

A "Collaboratory" is a lightweight application component allowing project teams to collaborate and share data and insight while distributed over a network, using intuitive visual navigation techniques. The innovation can be summarised as the integration of network technology used in collaborative games with a 3ddata navigation technique based on a low-level, fine-grained, customisable "atomic" visualization component infrastructure. The paper focuses on 3d medical imaging tools describing a Collaboratory implementation of a "Volume Viewer". This paper is also a blueprint to inform researchers and software engineers about the possibility to extend existing visualisation applications to support collaboration, e.g. making it easier to "collaboratize" visualization applications based on Microsoft's directX class library.
