To minimize the surging power consumption of microprocessors, adaptive computing environments (ACEs) where microarchitectural resources can be dynamically tuned to match a program's runtime requirement and characteristics are becoming increasing v common. Adaptive computing environments usually have multiple configurable hardware units, necessitating exploration of a large number of combinatorial configurations in order to identify the most energy-efficient configuration. In this paper, we propose a scheme for efficient management of multiple configurable units, utilizing the inherent capabilities of dynamic optimization systems. Most dynamic optimizers typically detect dominant code regions (hotspots). We develop an ACE management scheme where hotpot boundaries are used for phase detection and adaptation. Since hotspots are of variable sizes and are often nested, program phase behavior which is hierarchical in nature is automatically captured in this technique. To demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of our framework, we use the proposed framework to dynamically adapt the sizes of L-1 data and L-2 caches that have different reconfiguration latencies and overheads. Our technique reduces LID and L2 cache energy consumption by 47% and 58%, while a popular previously proposed technique only achieves reduction of 32% and 52% respectively.

This paper presents an integrated pseudo-noise(PN) code acquisition processor (CAP) for popular WCDMA, CDMA2000 and 802.11b systems. In near future, multi-system equipments are going to be more and more popular because of their wide supports of hybrid communications. The integrated processor is able to accomplish essential and high-complexity PN-code acquisitions in popular 3rd generation WCDMA and CDMA2000 systems and IEEE 802.11b WLAN system. Different code acquisitions in these DS-CDMA systems are generalized and carried out through a correlation-element (CE) array and some peripherals. In addition, low-power design is also involved to reduce power consumption effectively. The CAP is implemented and verified in a 1.8-V 0.18-μm CMOS technology. © 2008 IEEE.

High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) is specified in the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) to cope with the increasing demand for high-speed Internet-based multimedia services. This paper presents field experimental results of the user throughput performance in HSDPA to clarify the effects of the maximum number of multi-codes, transmit diversity, and advanced user equipment (UE) such as receive diversity and a chip equalizer. The field experimental results show that 15-multi-code UE, transmit diversity, and receive diversity achieve the peak throughput of 6.5, 8.5, and 10.2 Mbps, respectively, at the average moving speed of 30 km/h in an actual multi-path fading propagation channel, and the average received signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) is 24 dB. Furthermore, the results show that transmit diversity, receive diversity, and the chip equalizer can improve the average throughput to 27.0%, 54.6%, and 12.8%, respectively, compared to the conventional single antenna Rake receiver when the average received SIR is 16.3 dB. © 2005 IEEE.

Since Time Division Synchronous code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) technology, one of the Time Division Duplex (TDD) standards modes of 3rd generation Partnership Project (3GPP), adopted a lower spreading rate, 1.28 MChip/sec, it is usually referred to Low Chip Rate Time Division CDMA (LCR-TD-CDMA). Therefore its multipath diversity is not large enough due to fewer independent paths. Furthermore, it suffers from multi-user access interference (MAI) as other CDMA systems, where the influence of MAI is not small due to its small spreading factor. Our proposed solution overcomes all these shortcomings of TD-SCDMA technology. We propose an implementation of Space Time Block Coding (STBC) to introduce diversity to combat low multi-path diversity character of TD-SCDMA. We further incorporate joint transmission (JT) technique to remove MAI, and thereby improve system performance. The introduction of JT at the base station (BS) side also helps to reduce the complexity of the mobile station (MS). We use a combination of analytical and simulation methods to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The results show significant improvement for the proposed system. © 2005 IEEE.

WBTK: A new set of microbenchmarks to explore memory system performance for scientific computing

Memory hierarchies are a key component in obtaining high performance on modern microprocessors. To satisfy the ever-increasing demand on data rate access, they are also becoming increasingly complex: multilevel caches, non-blocking caches, sophisticated instructions for supporting prefetch and cache control, etc. If all of these advanced features promise to offer large performance gains, they also generate in some cases performance "anomalies" (i.e. bad performance triggered by specific code patterns). For precisely locating and understanding these anomalies, a new set of microbenchmarks called WBTK is introduced. We show through systematic experimentation on Alpha 21264, Power4 and Itanium1 that this microbenchmark first allowed us to detect most of the anomalies encountered on simple BLAS1 type codes. Secondly, it led us to demonstrate that vectorization of memory access was an efficient workaround for most of these anomalies.

Numerical and experimental study of separated flow in a plane asymmetric diffuser

Computations of the turbulent flow through plane asymmetric diffusers for opening angles from 8degrees to 10degrees have been carried out with the explicit algebraic Reynolds stress model (EARSM) of Wallin and Johansson [J. Fluid Mech. 403 (2000) 89]. It is based on a two-equation platform in the form of a low-Re K - omega formulation, see e.g. Wilcox [Turbulence Modeling for CFD, DCW Industries Inc., 1993]. The flow has also been studied experimentally for the 8.5degrees opening angle using PIV and LDV. The models under-predict the size and magnitude of the recirculation zone. This is, at least partially, attributed to an over-estimation of the wall normal turbulence component in a region close to the diffuser inlet and to the use of damping functions in the near-wall region. By analyzing the balance between the production and dissipation of the turbulence kinetic energy we find that the predicted dissipation is too large. Hence, we can identify a need for improvement of the modeling the transport equation for the turbulence length-scale related quantity. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a prototype design of a dual-mode Viterbi/turbo decoder for 3rd generation wireless communication systems is proposed. By merging some similar modules in both the Viterbi decoder and the log-MAP turbo code decoder, we built one dual-mode decoder with both of these two functions. When the decoder operates in the turbo mode, early-termination control of the iteration process can reduce the power consumption without influencing the decoding accuracy. Besides, in order to conform to the CDMA2000 standard, our decoder can also perform as a reconfigurable Viterbi decoder. That is, our design meets the requirement of the multi generator polynomial convolutional code specification. The design provides an integrated FEC kernel for modern communication systems.
