In the synchronous CDMA downlink using orthogonal codes, the intracell multiple access interference (MAI) is essentially caused by the frequency selective multipath channel. Therefore, intracell MAI may be suppressed by simple linear channel equalization. Similarly, intercell interference can be suppressed by means of linear space-time filtering. We compare two different adaptive receiver algorithms in the context of one or several receive antenna elements. The first one is based on adaptive LMMSE chip estimation, whereas the other one performs simple interchip interference cancellation by adaptive chip separation. The presented receiver structures are suitable for systems with long code scrambling, such as 3rd generation wideband CDMA standard. The results show considerable performance gains when compared to the conventional RAKE receiver.

code division multiple access (CDMA) will be an important part of 3rd generation mobile communication systems worldwide. Besides its many advantages, CDMA has the disadvantage that CDMA systems are interference limited. However, this limitation can be overcome by proper multiuser detection (MUD). We propose a MUD based on recurrent neural networks (RNN). This algorithm provides a performance which is close to the optimum MUD, while keeping the computational complexity low. Furthermore, the regular structure of the algorithm facilitates a hardware (HW) implementation utilizing distributed computation. The HW platform we target at are field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). Compared to application specific integrated circuits, FPGAs allow a much faster and more flexible hardware implementation. We have implemented the algorithm with a fixed point arithmetic and investigated the minimum number of binary digits required so that the performance of the algorithm does not degrade substantially. Furthermore an efficient implementation of the tanh nonlinearity is presented.

The executable data structures method is a kind of run-time code generation. It reduces the traversal time of data structures by implementing the traversal operation as self-traversal code stored in each data structure. It is attractive but not easy to use. This paper shows that it can be viewed as run-time optimization of a group of objects and can automatically be generated from the source program in an object-oriented language. The encapsulation mechanism of object-oriented languages helps to analyze the program and to use the automatically generated code generators. Preliminary evaluation results show that the proposed method is better than conventional run-time code generation or manual source level optimization. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

OptSolve++ is a set of C++ class libraries for nonlinear optimization and root-finding. The primary components include TxOptSlv (optimizer and solver classes), TxFunc (functor classes used to wrap user- defined functions), TxLin (linear algebra), and a library of test functions. These cross-platform components use exception handling and encapsu- late diagnostic output for the calling application. Use of the "template" design pattern in TxOptSlv provides a convenient interface that allows for interchange of existing algorithms by users and straightforward addition of new algorithms by developers. All classes are templated, so that optimization over the various floating-point types uses the same source code, and so that optimization over integers or more esoteric types can be readily accommodated with an identical interface. TxOptSlv and TxFunc use the template-based "traits" mechanism, allowing them to work with any user-specified container class, and future versions of OptSolve++ will allow users to interchange TxLin with other linear algebra libraries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is the most promising access scheme for the 3rd generation mobile communications system. Because it is indispensable in coping with multimedia communications in the 3rd generation system, CDMA packet transmission with high transmission efficiency over a wide variety of traffic characteristics is also necessary for the system. There are two kinds of packet transmission, the reservation method (RM) and the contention method (CM), used a media access control (MAC) methods in radio packet transmission. In this paper, the two MAC methods are evaluated and compared based on capacity. As a result, it is shown that it is necessary to switch MAC methods depending on the traffic characteristics. Moreover, this paper denotes a switching method between physical channels and a handover procedure, and quantitatively evaluates the switching frequency between physical channels and the hard handover (HHO) frequency.

The FRAMES Multiple Access (FMA) in order to meet the UMTS requirements and thereby also the IMT2000, has proposed a harmonized platform based in two access techniques, i.e. Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). Thus, the FMA concept has two modes: FMA1, Wideband TDMA with and without spreading, and FMA2, Wideband CDMA. The FMA1 included several options such as spreading (CDMA features) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. This paper presents the performance of this latter option in order to outline the flexibility of the FMA1 and the advantages of the OFDM modulation when used instead of the single carrier setting following the classical TDMA approach. Link level results illustrate that the EbNo values are comparable or even better than the ones obtained following traditional modulation techniques.
