Movement analysis is a complex technique to measure and evaluate the movements of the human body. It can be adopted to support various activities, including rehabilitation. Over the last decade, many systems for capturing human movements have been developed. The most advanced motion capturing systems use image processing techniques through the analysis of live video streams collected from a set of video cameras. These systems are very expensive, need to be installed and used by professionals. Moreover, they are not intended for patient rehabilitation, at home. Rehabilitation can be facilitated and accelerated by using virtual reality and movement analysis assisting systems. This paper describes a rehabilitation system for domestic whole body rehabilitation. It is composed by a virtual reality environment where spatial information of the human body are collected by a 3D depth sensing camera and inserted into the virtual world. The system is designed to perform data analysis by an off-line motion tracking algorithm. A complete set of rehabilitation exercises have been also implemented. A trial exercise is illustrated and discussed.

High performance object locating is the hard undertaking in a distributed system. The quality of this work can be assessed by the response time, space utilization and hit rate which are the essential requirements for large-scale Internet applications. Bloom Filter (BF) is made of a number of hash functions which is the critical part of the object locating algorithm. But how many hash functions in BF are the best remains unsolved. This paper presents a method for estimating those numbers in BF's hash function configuration. Our theoretical analysis for figuring out the optimal hash number is given. That number has been crucial to construct a better BF-based algorithm. In order to verify the correctness of our theoretical result, we establish a simulation environment with 50 million objects which are scattered on one hundred nodes. The experiment for comparing traditional hash function number with our number is given. The experimental result shows that the BF with our optimized parameter can reduce the object locating time by 81- 91 percent. Furthermore, we demonstrate this method can be used in similar content randomly-located distributed systems. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a recent paradigm emerging from Artificial Intelligence (AI), where computers are used as proactive tools assisting people with their day-to-day activities, making everyones life more comfortable. Another main concern of AmI originates from the human computer interaction domain and focuses on offering ways to interact with systems in a more natural way by means user friendly interfaces. This field is evolving quickly as can be witnessed by the emerging natural language and gesture based types of interaction. The inclusion of computational power and communication technologies in everyday objects is growing and their embedding into our environments should be as invisible as possible. In order for AmI to be successful, human interaction with computing power and embedded systems in the surroundings should be smooth and happen without people actually noticing it. The only awareness people should have arises from AmI: more safety, comfort and wellbeing, emerging in a natural and inherent way. ISAmI is the international symposium on Ambient Intelligence, aiming to bring together researchers from various disciplines that constitute the scientific field of Ambient Intelligence to present and discuss the latest results, new ideas, projects and lessons learned.

Principle Component Analysis (PCA)-based statistical 3D face modeling using example faces is a popular technique for modeling 3D faces and has been widely used for 3D face reconstruction and face recognition. The capability of the model to depict a new 3D face depends on the exemplar faces in the training set. Although a few 3D face databases are available to the research community and they have been used for 3D face modeling, there is little work done on rigorous statistical analysis of the models built from these databases. The common factors that are generally concerned are the size of the training set and the different choice of the examples in the training set. In this paper, a case study on USF Human ID 3D database, one of the most popular databases in the field, has been used to study the effect of these factors on the representational power. We found that: 1) the size of the training set increase, the more accurate the model can represent a new face;2) the increase of the representational power tends to slow down in an exponential manner and achieves saturity when the number of faces is greater than 250. These findings are under assumptions that the 3D faces in the database are randomly chosen and can represent different races and gender with neutral expressions. This analysis can be applied to the database which includes expressions too. A regularized 3D face reconstruction algorithm has also been tested to find out how feature points selection affects the accuracy of the 3D face reconstruction based on the PCA-model.

Programming Internet of Things (IoT) applications is challenging because developers have to be knowledgeable in various technical domains, from low-power networking, over embedded operating systems, to distributed algorithms. Hence, it will be challenging to find enough experts to provide software for the vast number of expected devices, which must also be scalable and particularly safe due to the connection to the physical world. To remedy this situation, we propose an architecture that provides Web-like scripting for low-end devices through Cloud-based application servers and a consistent, RESTful programming model. Our novel runtime container Actinium (Ac) exposes scripts, their configuration, and their Iifecycle management through a fully RESTful programming interface using the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). We endow the JavaScript language with an API for direct interaction with mote-class IoT devices, the CoapRequest object, and means to export script data as Web resources. With Actinium, applications can be created by simply mashing up resources provided by CoAP servers on devices, other scripts, and classic Web services. We also discuss security considerations and show the suitability of this architecture in terms of performance with our publicly available implementation.

A new dc-dc converter topology suitable for renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels or fuel cells is proposed in this paper. The converter which is a derived from Z-source converters uses coupled inductors to provide isolation and high conversion ratios. A big advantage of this converter is low switch voltage rating. A detailed analysis of a 25 V / 400 V dc, 300 W system is given along with preliminary simulation results.

This paper presents some modulation features of a high-frequency link based on reduced matrix converter for offshore wind farms. The topology consists on a reduced matrix converter, a high frequency transformer and a full-bridge diode rectifier. The converter is operated as a current source. An experimental set-up of 10 kW was used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed modulation. Results demonstrates good behavior of the voltage in the high frequency transformer and low harmonic distortion in the three phase current.

Dc-dc interfacing of photovoltaic (PV) modules into the downstream system is usually done by using a boost-power-stage converter with an added input capacitor. Its dynamic properties are often assumed to be equal to those of a conventional boost converter. The input voltage of the converter is most often feedback controlled to achieve maximum power transfer in PV applications, which actually changes the converter to be a current-fed converter. This paper will show that the boost-power-stage converter with an added input capacitor has thoroughly different dynamic properties than those of the conventional voltage-fed boost converter. The effect of input-side control on the output impedance and the mode of the output port are also discussed.

This paper presents a simple digital implementation of One Cycle Control used for regulating the current injected into the grid in photovoltaic micro-inverter applications. The digital implementation has been derived by the corresponding analog one by adopting a predictive estimation of the duty-cycle modulating signal. The dc/ac stage has been simulated and tested by using a laboratory prototype demonstrating the applicability of the proposed digital architecture.

Smart Microgrid (MG) systems require the development of new control strategies in order to provide of autonomous operability in their processes and self-diagnosis in case of different operation ranges. The integration and deep penetration of distributed Generation (DG) and the suddenly changes in the load during the transition's system generates different dynamic behaviours, requiring the implementation of hierarchical control loops to distribute efficiently the currents through the power converters involved. This document describes a hierarchical control for load sharing in the DC-DC and DC-AC converters of a MG using petri nets to distribute the local controller actions. Different study cases are presented according to the grid connected and isolated operation modes of MG. Results in simulation show the flexibility of the proposed strategy under multiple changes in the system. Finally the conclusions and future work are given.
