The paper addresses the problem of structuring and managing large distributed systems constructed from many distributedobjects. Specifically, the paper proposes a component model which can be used to compose objects into manageable entities. Components are specified using Darwin, an architecture description language developed by the authors. A mapping of distributedobjects into Darwin components is described together with an outline of how Darwin and its associated tools are implemented in a CORBA compliant environment.

Analyzing large and distributed image datasets is a crucial step in understanding the structural and functional characteristics of biological systems. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a toolkit that allows rapid and efficient development of biomedical image analysis applications in a distributed environment. This toolkit employs the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit (ITK) and Visualization Toolkit (VTK) layered on a component-based framework. We present experimental results on a cluster of workstations.

This paper briefly presents the design rationale for Mobidget, an agent-based distributed programming language, intended for highly-mobile applications. Mobidget provides two abstractions to foster mobility in heterogeneous computing environments: Agents serve as distributed protection domains, and cliques act as the basic unit of mobility. Migration does not impact the semantics for intra-Agent references, which are completely transparent to the programmer even though an agent's contents may be physically distributed.

Peer to peer and grid systems provide attractive middlewares to solve large numerical problems. The development, deployment and execution of applications using those middlewares suffer from the lack of well-adapted advanced tools. There is not any available solution to use the same application on two distinct middlewares. Our article presents the YML Framework which provides supporting tools to design and execute portable parallel applications over large scale peel, to peer and grid middlewares. The YML Framework defines a new parallel programming language called YvetteML which is composed of a graph language and a component model. We evaluate the performance of our framework with a simple numerical application using XtremWeb as a middleware.

This article presents a method for evaluating the CPU power, independently from the system used, in heterogeneous networks of work stations. It is based on the use of Java language in order to ensure application portability and more particularly on the mechanism of thread CPU processing time measurement introduced in the version 1.5 of Sun Java. That tool will be integrated into the load balancing mechanism which is totally written in Java and that we developed in the LIFL project ADAJ. We show how to evaluate the potential power of the CPU with a software totally written in Java. Moreover, we will justify the results provided by our approach. We will also analyse the exploitation of the calibration tool in order to improve the execution time of parallel and distributedapplications in the context of load balancing in a network of workstations.

The management of transactions is among the main issues to tackle in many current applications such as multimedia applications or visio-conferencing. Theses applications are often distributed over several sites, they manipulate large volumes of data and their actions have temporal constraints and are causally related. Therefore, DRTDBSs(1) are the systems that manage them efficiently, notably if the transaction concurrency control and commit processes take into account the precedence relationships which might exist between transactions or subtransactions. In this paper we propose causal-prompt protocol to manage the commit process of such transactions. We show that causal-prompt protocol respects certain transactions properties and enhances the real-time transaction success ratio (Number of transactions that meet their deadlines total number of transactions).

For AR applications the 3D position and direction of the users view have to be determined in real time. At the same time, the augmentation, one or more 3D objects, have to be rendered. This article describes a distributed mobile AR-System designed for industrial service applications. By distributing the different tasks involved in AR, the computational load of the portable system can be minimized such that a small and lightweight computer can be used. The portable computer is connected to a backend server via WLAN. Minimisation of the bandwidth usage of the system ensures that 20 or more systems can operate on one standard WLAN access point. The main focus of this article is to minimise the computational load of the mobile system and the network load simultaneously.

This paper proposes an adaptive display control scheme for touchable exhibits in a distributed haptic museum in order to improve the output quality of haptic media as well as audio and visual media. The proposed scheme carries out LoD (level of detail) control of exhibited objects and proactive transfer control of information files. The LoD control of objects dynamically changes the granularity of object display according to, the network load, CPU processing load, and importance of an object, which is determined by the distance, direction, etc. from a user's viewpoint to the object. The proactive transfer control of information files transmits the object's haptic information (e.g., weight and form), visual information (e.g., color and pattern), and explanatory information (e.g., voice, video, and text) from a server to clients in advance according to the file size, network load, and CPU processing load. A method of implementing the scheme is discussed in the paper.
