In distributed database systems, the main problem occurs when managing the transactions (concurrency control and commit). In real-time context, the problem is more complex, since these processes must be done with respect to the transaction deadlines. In this paper, we deal with the global distributed transaction commit and the local concurrency control problems in applications where a transaction is decomposed into a mandatory part and an optional part. Based on the RT_WEP and PROMPT protocols, we propose a new protocol that combines the concurrency control and commit management of RT_WEP and the lending of uncommitted data of PROMPT. In other words, we propose to add the concept of lending uncommitted data in RT_WEP to reduce the blocking time of the transactions. Thus, transactions have more chances to meet their deadlines.

This paper presents a recursive computational multi-secret sharing technique that hides k - 2 secrets of size b each into n shares of a single secret S of size b, such that any k of the n shares suffice to recreate the secret S as well as all the hidden secrets. This may act as a steganographic channel to transmit hidden information or used for authentication and verification of shares and the secret itself. Further, such a recursive technique may be used as a computational secret sharing technique that has potential applications in secure and reliable storage of information on the Web, in sensor networks and information dispersal schemes. The presented technique, unlike previous computational techniques, does not require the use of any encryption key or storage of public information.

An often claimed benefit of mobile agent technology is the reduction of communication cost. Especially the area of information filtering has been proposed for the application of mobile filter agents. However, an effective coordination of agents, which takes into account the current network conditions, is difficult to achieve. This contribution analyses the situation that data distributed among various remote data servers has to be examined with mobile filter agents. We present an approach for coordinating the agents' employment, which minimizes communication costs. Validation studies on the possible cost savings for various constellations show that savings up to 90% can be achieved in the face of actual Internet conditions.

Continuous monitoring of a computer network performance is probably the only solution which allows prompt identification of anomalous functioning conditions and knowledge of parameters on which to base speedy, effective recovery interventions. A number of tools for performance management already exist, but their effectiveness is limited as they are essentially inserted inside owner network management solutions. In the paper we describe the realization of PMt, a platform for the development of performance management applications for the control and real-time management of a heterogeneous computer network. PMt imposes an object-oriented view of the distributed system, defines a performance management design methodology which adapts well to really distributed system management and provides the user with a set of tools and services to assist him both in the design of new performance management applications and in actual management of the whole system.
