A novel recognition method of throwing force of athlete combined with wavelet and multi-class support vector machine is introduced in the paper, which is based on the analysis of motion characters of gliding shot put. Utilizing the digital shot based on a three dimensional accelerometer, we get the three dimensional throwing forces in real time. Through wavelet transform, the general characteristics of force information are picked up. Then the general characteristics are input into the classifier for recognition of throwing force curves. The analysis provides the scientific basis for the motion training and instruction of shot put. The experiment shows that the method not only has high anti-noise ability and improves the recognition efficiency, but also decreases the burden of system and improves the recognition speed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

This paper presents a fast neural network method of radial basis function with dynamic decay adjustment (RBFN-DDA) to classify Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) and galaxies automatically. The classification process is mainly comprised of three parts: (1) the dimensions of the normalized input spectra is reduced by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA);(2) the network is built from scratch: the number of required hidden units is determined during training and the individual radii of the Gaussians are adjusted dynamically until corresponding criterions are satisfied;(3) The trained network is used for the classification of the real spectra of QSOs and galaxies. The method of RBFN-DDA having constructive and fast training process solves the difficulty of selecting appropriate number of neurons before training in many methods of neural networks and achieves lower error rates of spectral classification. Besides, due to its efficiency, the proposed method would be particularly useful for the fast and automatic processing of voluminous spectra to be produced from the large-scale sky survey project. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) are increasingly important for wheeled mobile robots (WMRs), especially those in unknown environments such as planetary exploration. There are many kinds of fault diagnosis methods available for mobile robots, including multiple model-based approaches, particle filter based approaches, sensor fusion based approaches. Currently, all of these methods are designed for complete models. However, completely modeling a system is difficult, even impossible. In this paper, particle filter and neural network are integrated to diagnose complex systems with imperfect models. Two features are extracted from particles: the sum of sample weights, and the maximal a posteriori probability. These features are further feed to a neural network to decide whether the estimation given by the particle filter is credible or not. An incredible estimation indicates that the true state isn't included in the state space, i.e. it is a novel state (or an unknown fault). This method preserves the merits of particle filter and can diagnose known faults as well as detect unknown faults. It is testified on a real mobile robot. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Treating an averaged evoked-fields (EFs) or event-related potentials (ERPs) data is a main approach in the topics on applying Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to neurobiological signal processing. By taking the average, the signal-noise ratio (SNR) is increased, however some important information such as the strength of an evoked response and its dynamics (trial-by-trial variations) will be lost. The single-trial data analysis, on the other hand, can avoid this problem but the poor SNR is necessary to be improved. This paper presents a robust multi-stage data analysis method for the single-trial Magnetoencephalograph (MEG) and Electroencephalograph (EEG) recorded data. In the pre-processing stage, a robust subspace method is firstly applied for reducing a high-level unique component (additive noise) in single-trial raw data. In the second stage, a parameterized t-distribution ICA method is applied for further decomposing the overlapped common components (sources). In the post-processing stage, the source localization or scalp mapping technique and post-averaging technique are applied for visualizing the dynamic brain activities. The results on single-trial MEG and EEG data analysis both illustrate the high performances not only in the visualization of the behavior and location but also in the visualization of the trial-by-trial variations of individual evoked brain response. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

While manifold learning algorithms can discover intrinsic low-dimensional manifold embedded in the high-dimensional Euclidean space, the discriminant ability of the low-dimensional subspaces obtained by the algorithms is often lower than those obtained by the conventional dimensionality reduction approaches. Furthermore, the original feature vectors may include redundancy such as high-order correlation which cannot be removed by manifold learning algorithms. To address the two problems, we first employ Gabor wavelet to remove intrinsic redundancies of images and obtain a set of over-completed feature vectors. Then a supervised manifold learning algorithm (ULLELDA) is applied to project Gabor-based data and out-of-the-samples into a common low-dimensional subspace. Experiments in two FERET face databases indicate that Gabors indeed help supervised manifold learning to remarkably improve the discriminant ability of low-dimensional subspaces. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Currently, there is an increasing demand for real-time multimedia applications running over the Internet. In a wired network, if congestion occurs, the quality of real-time multimedia transmission degrades severely. Rate-based adaptation schemes are being used to alleviate congestion. Packet loss incurred is used as the main indicator of network congestion. However, when running multimedia applications over wireless/mobile networks, packet loss can be attributed to different causes other than congestion. Packet loss can be due to the low bandwidth of the wireless link or the frequent interruptions in service due to mobility, handoff, or signal propagation effects, e.g. obstruction, attenuation. In this paper, we present the design of our sensor Guided Wireless Adaptation Scheme (SGWAS) that works in a micromobility domain and that infers the main reason of packet loss incurred by the mobile node in the cell. Consequently, it takes the appropriate action to improve the QoS of the transmission. Determining the reason of packet loss relies on information obtained from wireless sensors specifically RFID devices, to detect the location of the mobile node within the cell. On one hand, if packet loss is due to the low bandwidth of the wireless link which can cause local wireless link congestion, then local transmission rate adaptation is applied in the cell. On the other hand, if packet loss is due to mobility or signal propagation effects, then other appropriate actions are taken. We conducted some simulation experiments to verify that we can determine the location of the mobile node when it is in the handoff region. The results demonstrate that SGWAS identifies the reason of packet loss when the mobile node is in the handoff region. Rate adaptation should not be performed in this case because packet loss is not due to congestion.

information aggregation in Wireless sensor networks provides for energy-efficiency for energy-constrained nodes to increase life-time of the network. This is achieved by processing data as it flows from information sources to sinks. The decision of when to "clock out" data as it is processed by nodes has significant performance impact in terms of energy-efficiency, data accuracy and freshness. Solis et al. have proposed `Cascading timeout' in [1]. In this paper, we propose cascading timeout that is aware of the value or significance of data to be sent. By simulation results we show that this scheme achieves energy efficiency while keeping data accuracy same.

In wireless ad hoc networks, the major quality of service (QoS) concern and challenge in the design and analysis of contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols is to achieve good throughput and access delay performance in the presence of hidden terminals, which are defined as the terminals out of the radio coverage area of an intended transmitter but within that of the receiver. We propose and analyze in this paper a new dual-channel random access protocol, called "Double Sense Multiple Access" (DSMA), for improving QoS support in wireless ad hoc networks. By separating the transmissions of ready-to-send (RTS) and data packets into two time-slotted channels and by introducing a novel double sense mechanism, DSMA completely solves the hidden terminal problem and can guarantee the success transmission of data packets. By taking into account the most complex network scenario in which all transmitters are hidden terminals with respect to each other, key QoS metrics such as throughput, blocking probability and access delay are derived mathematically for the proposed DSMA protocol. These analytical results are verified by extensive computer simulations. © 2006 ACM.

We consider the orthogonal multiple relay channel at the low SNR regime. The source transmits to the destination and all the possible relays in one channel and the relays transmit in different and orthogonal channels making use of the transmission received from the source and, in the more general case, also the other relay transmissions. This cooperative strategy achieves diversity gains at a high cost in bandwidth efficiency, due to the orthogonality of the transmissions. However, it has the desired benefit of allowing all the nodes in the network to behave as in a point to point channel. Based on the max-flow min-cut upper bound for relay networks, we explore the capacity limits of this kind of communication, obtaining the energy allocation, relay selection and ordering, when full channel state information (CSI) is available at every network node.

Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of low-power, small-scale sensors with limited processing and communication capabilities. Such networks are usually applied to gather data from interested area or specific environment and deliver to remote users for analyzing or monitoring. Because of sensing devices are usually powered by batteries, it is a great challenge to meet the performance of long system lifetime required by different applications under limited power. In the densely deployed sensor networks, the area or data sensed by neighboring sensors may overlap. In recent researches, coverage preserved node scheduling has been proposed to conserve power and provide sensing reliability. By selecting appropriate sensors into sleep state, the system lifetime can be extended without losing coverage. In this paper, we propose a cluster-based coverage-preserved node scheduling scheme. We divide sensors into clusters and group cluster members into sponsor sets based on neighbor information. The proposed approach distributes the workloads among sponsor set nodes and ensures sufficient coverage as long as possible
