In this paper, we introduce a concrete, practical Ubiquitous Organizational information (UOI) service framework, providing novice users intelligent and useful services with respect to the environment. The UOI framework based on the sensor networks is composed of 3-level hierarchical network architecture. To provide a rich array of services, the modular software framework and foundation software are designed and implemented on our hardware prototype. We define three representative UOI services and illustrate each service flow operating on the proposed UOI network. In addition, we describe some details in the implementation of a distributed UOI network on the UOI test-bed. © IFIP international Federation for information processing 2005.

As sensor network applications to monitor and control the physical environment from remote locations, a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) has been the focus of many recent research and development efforts. A MANET, autonomous system of mobile hosts, is characterized by multi-hop wireless links, absence of any cellular infrastructure, and frequent host mobility. Many kinds of routing protocols for ad-hoc network have been proposed and still actively updated, because each application has different characteristics and requirements. Since the current studies show it is almost impossible to design an efficient routing protocol to be adapted for all kinds of applications. We, therefore, have focused a certain application, inter-vehicle communication for ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), to evaluate the routing protocols. In our experiment, we defined several traffic flow models for inter-vehicle communication applications. By using simulation, we evaluated end-to-end delay and throughput performance of data transmission for inter-vehicle communications with the existing routing protocols. The result confirms the feasibility of using some routing protocols for inter-vehicle communication services.

We present a framework for modelling and simulating the distributed wireless sensor network. We modelled the object detection and tracking scenario using acoustic sensors and developed a simulator for simulating it. Kalman filtering approach is applied to reduce the noise and to smoothen the data. Simulations' results are presented to illustrate the performance of the developed model. Possible applications might be vehicular traffic monitoring in highways, detecting and tracking people movement in secured areas, tracking & navigating mobile robots, tracking animals' movement, and surveillance of hazardous regions.

The mammalian retina is actually an intelligent sensor network. It is capable of extracting very rich edge information in the cortex, from the image falling on it, before transferring the computed values to the brain node, located further interior, for carrying out more sophisticated information processing tasks, and all in real time. In this paper a simple two dimensional sensor network for implementing the mammalian retina on a three-dimensional vision chip has been suggested. Although the inner layers of retina are known to elicit non-linear responses, we have shown here that even such a simple linear analogue can yield some very effective tools for the purpose of retina-like image preprocessing

In order to investigate the routing aspects of small-world networks, Kleinberg [13] proposes a network model based on a d-dimensional lattice with long-range links chosen at random according to the d-harmonic distribution, Kleinberg shows that the greedy routing algorithm by using only local information performs in O(lg2 n) expected number of hops, where n denotes the number of nodes in the network. Martel and Nguyen [17] have found that the expected diameter of Kleinberg's small-world networks is θ(lg n). Thus a question arises naturally: Can we improve the routing algorithms to match the diameter of the networks while keeping the amount of information stored on each node as small as possible? Existing approaches for improving the routing performance in the small-world networks include: (1) Increasing the number of long-range links [2, 15];(2) Exploring more nodes before making routing decisions [14];(3) Increasing the local awareness for each node [10, 17]. However, all these approaches can only achieve O((lg n)1+Ε) expected number of hops, where Ε > 0 denotes a constant. We extend Kleinberg's model and add two augmented local links for each node, which are connected to nodes chosen randomly and uniformly within lg2 n Mahattan distance. Our investigation shows that these augmented local connections can make small-world networks more navigable. We show that if each node is aware of O(lg n) number of neighbors via the augmented local links, there exist both non-oblivious and oblivious algorithms that can route messages between any pair of nodes in O(lg n lg lg n) expected number of hops, which is a near optimal routing complexity and outperforms the other related results for routing in Kleinberg's small-world networks. Our schemes keep only O(lg 2 n) bits of routing information on each node, thus they are scalable with the network size. Our results imply that the awareness of O(lg n) nodes through augmented links is more efficient for routing than via the local link

We consider the problem of estimating vector-valued variables from noisy "relative" measurements. The measurement model can be expressed in terms of a graph, whose nodes correspond to the variables being estimated and the edges to noisy measurements of the difference between the two variables. We take the value of one particular variable as a reference and consider the optimal estimator for the differences between the remaining variables and the reference. This type of measurement model appears in several sensor network problems, such as sensor localization and time synchronization. Two algorithms are proposed to compute the optimal estimate in a distributed, iterative manner. The first algorithm implements the Jacobi method to iteratively compute the optimal estimate, assuming all communication is perfect. The second algorithm is robust to temporary communication failures, and converges to the optimal estimate when certain mild conditions on the failure rate are satisfied. It also employs an initialization scheme to improve accuracy in spite of the slow convergence of the Jacobi method

sensor networks are a key technology for the 21st century. Our research aims to formulate and implement a new conceptual model for the next generation of networked sensor devices, which encompasses not only intelligence in local sensor nodes such that the sensors are self validating, but also the additional capability that the sensors could be networked and communicate with one another and share information. The basic idea is to decompose the processing of monitoring and data rectification tasks and decentralize them on a federated sensor network. The proposed framework has been implemented for a chemical process unit. Experiment results demonstrated the feasibility and thus, the potential of the proposed sensor network.

This paper presents a first attempt to solve the geolocation problem using support vector regression (SVR). This paper proposes a method to pinpoint the location of stationary, hostile radar using the time difference of arrival (TDoA) of the same characteristic pulse emitted by the radar at 3 different unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying in a fixed triangular formation. The performance of the proposed SVR method is compared with a variation of the Taylor series method (TSM) used for solving the same problem and currently deployed by the DSTO, Australia on the Aerosonde Mark III UAVs. The robustness to error of the SVR method is explored and compared with the TSM. Extended applications of the SVR approach to more general localization scenarios in wireless sensor networks are proposed for further work

Electrical market often demands accurate forecasting of electrical load for planning and operation of the power infrastructure. Current models can forecast load from half hour up to 24 hours and are based on aggregate temperature for the entire day. Although these models work very well, they do not consider the intermediate real time information between time intervals to forecast load which introduce many uncertainties pertaining to factors such as climatic conditions, geographic locations etc. Furthermore, such intermediate real time information is costly and difficult to obtain. With the aid of distributed sensor networks, real time information can easily be obtained which can lead to precise planning and operation of power systems. Such information can easily improve electrical load forecasting and reduce uncertainty which can have a direct impact on the customer. We propose new and improved models for electricity load forecasting by incorporating real-time weather (temperature) information arising from the low-cost distributed sensor networks

Anonymous communication in sensor networks is an important security tool. A major sensornet security issue is to anonymize sources and sinks in sensor networks despite the inability to hide wireless transmissions. However, none of the existing anonymous communication schemes provide complete protection against attacks posed by different types of adversaries. In this paper, we propose a novel and scalable anonymous communication scheme Randomized Message Forwarding with Equalized Incoming/Outgoing Traffic Rate (RMFETR) which resists all known eavesdrop attacks. A further modification of this scheme Destination First Randomized Message Forwarding with Equalized Incoming/Outgoing Traffic Rate (DFRMFETR) improves message delivery time significantly. We present security analysis and performance analysis of these two schemes. While both RMFETR and DFRMFETR have the same security benefits against eavesdrop attacks as the randomized Buses protocol, they are more flexible and easy to implement. The expected message delivery time under RMFETR is same as that under the randomized Buses, while DFRMFETR induces a smaller delivery time.
