The aim of this study is to develop a system for extracting information during postural stability tests, using a new capacitive force sensor conceived and made by us. Based on the capacitive force sensor, we developed a pedometric force plate (PFP) for use in human postural and gait analysis. We present the method of data acquisition, the signal processing and the results obtained. For determining a relationship between the force signal parameters (spectrum, COP (Center of Pressure) trajectories) and subjects' postural behavior, six healthy persons were tested. The Fourier spectra were determined for every force sensor and for the COP. Also, the gait line was determined for three subjects who achieved a short walk before the postural test.

In this paper, we investigated the performance of bird species recognition using neural networks with different preprocessing methods and different sets of features. Context neural network architecture was designed to embed the dynamic nature of bird songs into inputs. We devised a noise reduction algorithm and effectively applied it to enhance bird species recognition. The performance of the context neural network architecture was comparatively evaluated with linear/mel frequency cepstral coefficients and promising experimental results were achieved.

information sharing and provision in the vehicular field is nowadays a growing research topic in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Although a lot of work is being carried out in these terms, the most of the approximations are based on local solutions which solve a particular problem. Communication protocols are proposed to exchange information among vehicles in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), monitoring centres provide information about traffic, advertising mechanisms send location-based notifications about local shops. The system presented in this paper proposes an integrated infrastructure for information sharing in both local and global schemes. Using a novel communication paradigm based on cellular and peer to peer (P2P) networks, traffic information is shared among close vehicles and sent to a core infrastructure for a global processing. This centralized system is able to provide not only traffic events, but also general context-aware information adapted to the user's preferences. The complete design has been developed over a whole prototype, considering both hardware and software requirements.

Wireless sensornetworks for outdoor applications, such as habitat monitoring, are expected to require wireless link ranges that are longer than achievable with commonly available platforms. We discuss ways to extend link range within the constraints typical of wireless sensornetworks and incorporate these aspects into the design of a wireless module. We report on the use of this module in a wireless sensor network designed for habitat monitoring. This application involves tracking the movement of RFID tagged bats between their nesting boxes.

In this paper, the concept of a 3 layer distributed sensor network for patient monitoring and care is introduced. The envisioned network has a leaf node layer (consisting of patient sensors), a intermediate node layer (consisting of the supervisory processor residing with each patient) and the root node processor (residing at a central monitoring facility). The introduced paradigm has the capability of dealing with the bandwidth bottleneck at the wireless patient - root node link and the processing bottleneck at the central processor or root node of the network.

sensors are swiftly finding their way into real-world applications, from farming to factory floor monitoring. In parallel with this deployment, several standards are being developed to extend greater interoperability between sensor systems. In this paper, we explore a subset of the various sensor standards, and relate our experiences in attempting to integrate some of these standards for the purposes of developing an autonomic context manager.

It's very important to find an efficient method of secret key management to guarantee secure communication in wireless sensornetworks. In this paper, a cluster-based dynamic secret key management scheme has been proposed. A pairwise key has been established through OR and XOR operations in this scheme since its low energy and limited memory space of a sensor node. These OR and XOR operations not only save energy of sensors but also with high efficiency. The keys between sensors can be updated, which can strengthen the security of the wireless sensornetworks. Finally, the simulation results proved that the scheme has high security and low energy cost compared with other schemes.

Unlike conventional computer networks such as office LANs or the Internet which can be used for a host of applications, wireless sensornetworks are typically used for specific applications in mind. It is this fundamental difference combined with the fact that energy efficiency is of paramount importance in wireless sensornetworks that a different approach needs to be taken when designing protocols. In this paper we first describe the main differences and benefits of the cross-layered techniques used for sensornetworks over the traditional OSI layered approach used for conventional networks. We then give two examples which illustrate how we extend usual sensor network cross-layered optimization by going beyond just MAC-routing optimizations to optimizations between the application and the MAC layers.
