This paper describes the design and installation of infrastructure to support a sensor network on Davies Reef in the Great Barrier Reef. This infrastructure incorporates a sensor gateway that provides an aggregation point for sensor data, a hybrid power supply and a high-speed microwave link. The resulting system is self-sufficient. It provides a robust interface for a planned sensor network in a location that has limited access and is in an extremely harsh environment.

Among security problems of sensornetworks, the wormhole attack is especially a serious one because its launch is rather easy and the detection is very difficult. Beside the malicious wormholes built deliberately by attackers, this paper presents another type of wormholes: natural wormholes according to the "shortcut" property of wormholes. Natural wormholes are critical links formed by the topological result of deployment. Both types of wormholes are harmful to normal network operations and need to be identified and repaired to avoid severe damages. This paper presents two novel distributed algorithms using only local connectivity information for detecting both types of wormholes. Unlike the previous approaches, the proposed solution requires no special hardware to get location information or time synchronization.

In this paper, we consider a general wireless relay network where multiple source terminals communicate with one another with the assist of a relay node. We first propose a relaying scheme under the category of amplify-and-forward (AF) and then prove the conditions on system parameters to realize the efficient data detection from engineering perspective. From information theoretic point of view, there is no constraint on system parameters. Moreover, we obtain a general beamforming structure at the relay node, which is optimal for any objective functions, e.g., transmission rate, mean-square-error (MSE), bit-error-rate (BER), etc.

In existing distributed target tracking systems, usually the next tasking sensor node is selected from the candidate sensor nodes by the current tasking sensor node. In this paper we demonstrate by a real test-bed that such approach may not achieve satisfactory tracking performance due to the long computation time needed for sensor scheduling. We develop a distributed target tracking system implementing a novel competition based distributed sensor scheduling scheme where a candidate sensor node with highest predicted tracking accuracy will be elected as the new tasking sensor with highest probability. The system hardware and software architectures are described and the superior tracking performances of the system are demonstrated with experimental comparison with existing sensor scheduling schemes.

Ultra-dense Internet of Things (IoT) networks and machine type communications herald an enormous opportunity for new computing paradigms and are serving as a catalyst for profound change in the evolution of the Internet. We explore leveraging the communication within IoT to serve data processing by appropriately shaping the aggregate behavior of a network to parallel more traditional computation methods. This paper presents an element of this vision, whereby we map the operations of an artificial neural network onto the communication of an IoT network for simultaneous data processing and transfer. That is, we provide a framework to treat a network holistically as an artificial neural network, rather than placing neural networks within the network. The operation of components of a neural network, neurons and connections between neurons, are performed by the various elements of the IoT network, i.e., the devices and their connections. The proposed approach reduces the latency in delivering processed information and supports the locality of information inherent to IoT by removing the need for transfer to remote data processing sites.

Multiple receive antennas are known to provide receiver diversity but typically require considerable separation between them. We introduce the concept of space sampling at the receiver where antennas are placed relatively close to each other. Since the antennas are close, the samples are highly spatially correlated and does not help in performance improvement in a typical wireless system with flat fading. However, this concept is very useful particularly in an OFDM system with frequency selective fading which has an inherent multipath diversity. Under these circumstances, the required space diversity for performance improvement is obtained by the transformation of multipath diversity to useful space diversity in frequency domain inherently by an OFDM system[1]. The minimum separation required between the antennas under such circumstances is derived analytically and we have show that even with a separation of only 0.44lambda, the required spatial correlation in the frequency domain becomes sufficiently low.
