Synthetic fingerprint generation using propagation models has been proposed as a cost-effective way to reduce the deployment cost of WiFi positioning systems. Contrary to traditional WiFi positioning systems, which require recording WiFi fingerprints together with ground truth locations, fingerprint generation attempts to automatically populate the radio map using theoretical properties of radio signals. Current solutions for fingerprint generation, however, are extremely complex, requiring complicated modeling of both the signal characteristics and the environment. The present paper contributes by demonstrating that simpler modeling, where only the path-loss exponent is learned from empirical measurements, is sufficient for practical purposes reaching accuracy comparable to carrying out a detailed survey.

In this paper, we summarize AAIA'15 data mining competition: Tagging Firefighter Activities at a Fire Scene, which was held between March 9 and July 6, 2015. We describe the scope and background of the competition. We also reveal details regarding the data set used in the competition, which was collected and tagged specifically for the purpose of this data challenge. We explain the data acquisition process which involved using a body sensor network system consisting of several inertial measurement units and a physiological data sensor. Finally, we briefly discuss submitted results with respect to their possible real-life application in our decision support system.

E-healthcare games are a new patient care tool for providing fun, on-line monitoring enabled lifestyle, and a way for redefining traditional doctor-patient relationship. In this work, we demonstrate the use of intelligent sensors to capture patient behaviors for home healthcare. We design a new e-healthcare game user interface, iCube, for monitoring and recording patient activities. The iCube is a 3D game which has six display panels on the surfaces of a 3D cube embedded with a zigbee interface and some sensors for behavior monitoring. To prove its concept, we implement a Spot the Difference game. When a player is playing the game, the iCube can capture the player's hand shaking, rolling response, and visual capability. Those collected data are then sent to a database for spotting the progress/difference of the player over a long period time.

Minimum temperature predictions are required for agricultural producers in order to assess the magnitude of potential frost events. Several regression models can be used for the estimation problem at a single location but one common problem is the amount of required data for training, testing and validation. Nowadays, sensor networks can be used to gather environmental data from multiple locations. In order to alleviate the amount of data needed to model a single site, we can combine information from the different sources and then estimate the performance of the estimator using hold-out test sites. A mixture of Gaussian Processes (MGP) model is proposed for the distributed estimation problem and an efficient Hybrid Monte Carlo approach is also proposed for the estimation of the model parameters. © IFIP international Federation for information processing 2015.

Owing to the rich processing, multi-modal sensing, and versatile networking capabilities, smartphones are increasingly used to build data-intensive embedded sensing applications. However, various challenges must be systematically addressed before smartphones can be used as a generic embedded sensing platform, including high power consumption, lack of real-time functionality and user-friendly embedded programming support. This paper presents ORBIT, a smartphone-based platform for data-intensive embedded sensing applications. ORBIT features a tiered architecture, in which a smartphone can interface to an energy-efficient peripheral board and/or a cloud service. ORBIT as a platform addresses the shortcomings of current smartphones while utilizing their strengths. ORBIT provides a profile-based task partitioning allowing it to intelligently dispatch the processing tasks among the tiers to minimize the system power consumption. ORBIT also provides a data processing library that includes two mechanisms namely adaptive delay/quality trade-off and data partitioning via multi-threading to optimize resource usage. Moreover, ORBIT supplies an annotation based programming API for developers that significantly simplifies the application development and provides programming flexibility. Extensive microbenchmark evaluation and two case studies including seismic sensing and multi-camera 3D reconstruction, validate the generic design of ORBIT.

In this paper, the finite-horizon distributed H∞ fault estimation problem is investigated for a class of linear discrete time-varying systems in sensor networks. sensor nodes are distributed according to a given network topology and each sensor receives the information from both the system and its neighbors. A set of measurement models is established for each sensor node that describes all the available information from the node and its neighbors. The distributed H∞ fault estimation problem addressed is first transformed into an optimization issue of a certain indefinite quadratic form. Then, by employing innovation analysis and projection theory in Krein spaces, the desired distributed H∞ fault estimators are designed in terms of the solution to a set of recursive equations. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed distributed fault estimation scheme. © 2015, IFAC (international Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. As the characteristics of unpredictable capacity and location characteristics, this paper presents a new type remote wireless transmission systems applied to Internet of Things. Future cars are becoming powerful sensor platforms capable to collect, store and share large amount of sensory data by constant monitoring of urban streets. It is quite challenging to upload such data from all vehicles to the infrastructure due to limited bandwidth resources and high upload cost. This invoke the need to identify the appropriate vehicles within the Vehicular Ad-hoc Network, that are important for different urban sensing tasks based on their natural mobility and availability. This paper address this problem leveraging the self-decision making ability of a "Smart Vehicle" regarding its importance in the network. To do so, we present CarRank, an information-Centric algorithm for a vehicle to first rank different location-aware information. It then uses the information importance, its spatio-temporal availability and neighborhood topology to analytically find its relative importance in the network. CarRank is the first step towards identifying the best set of information hubs to be used in the network for the efficient collection, storage and distribution of urban sensory information. We evaluate CarRank under a scalable simulation environment using realistic vehicular mobility traces. Results show that CarRank is an efficient ranking algorithm to identify socially important vehicles in comparison to other ranking metrics used in the literature.

In this work we present a GIS web-based open source platform for wireless in situ geosensor data visualization and distributed geoprocessing. Emphasis is put on: i) visualization of sensor measurements and sensor location on a map; ii) geoprocessing of these data; iii) and, visualization of geoprocessing results on a map. The platform combines the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) sensor Web Enablement (SWE) standards, in particular the sensor Observation Service (SOS), and the OGC Web processing Service (WPS).

This work introduces an indoor positioning system (IPS) which is a combination of wireless sensor network (WSN) and inertial navigation system (INS) for locating a moving object indoor. Here, WSN is adopted to measure the ranges from the unknown node to those anchor nodes by time of arrival (ToA) method. The core of the INS is the inertial measurement unit (IMU), which consists of accelerometers and gyroscopes. The real time inertial measurements from IMU and the range information by ToA method are both transmitted to processing terminal, where we propose to use three kinds of recursive Bayesian algorithms to make use of data to obtain the location estimations. The experimental results show that even with only two anchor nodes, the estimation accuracy of hybrid method by these three algorithms is higher than both standalone ToA method with 3 anchors and pure inertial solution.
