A critical issue in designing efficient routing algorithms for wireless sensor networks (WSN) is dealing with holes which do occur due to several reasons, including cases caused by natural obstacles or disaster suffered areas. Traditional solutions utilize perimeter routing techniques that however lead to traffic concentration on the nodes on the hole boundary, which can make these nodes getting energy exhausted and the hole enlarging, consequently. Several recent proposals attempt to fix this by deploying a special, forbidding area around the hole, which helps to improve path length but still causes significant load unbalancing due to the fixed shape of this forbidding area. We introduce a novel approach in dealing with routing holes where the packet forwarder node notices early enough about the occurrence of a hole in the direction to the destination and hence, can "bend" the path around this hole efficiently. This can be done by deploying a hole aware area around the hole where each node maintains an angle of its view to this hole. We achieve this hole awareness mechanism by using an economical learn-anddisseminate strategy where the nodes on a hole's boundary learn and create a core shape of the hole and then economically disseminate this information piece to the surrounding neighborhood of a controlled size wherein each node then compute and store its holeview angle. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed routing scheme is the first one that targets and achieves both the two requirements of energy efficiency and load balancing in dealing with the occurrence of holes. Our simulation experiments show that our scheme strongly outperforms several important existing schemes in several performance factors, including route length, efficient use of energy and load balancing. Recent advances in wireless communication, miniaturization of spatially enabled devices and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) services have resulted in a large number of novel application domains. Applications in these novel domains (moving objects tracking, sensor networks, fleet management, real-time intelligent transportation systems, etc.) process huge volume of continuous streaming data, i.e. data that is produced incrementally over time, rather than being available in full before processing. Data stream management systems (DSMS) have been developed to manage continuous data streams. Usually based on relational paradigm, they have rudimentary support for spatial data. Recent research efforts in data stream management systems focus mainly on processing continuous queries over traditional data streams, and only a few papers addressed spatio-temporal continuous queries. In this paper we present OCEANUS, an ongoing effort to extend TelegraphCQ DSMS with spatial support providing a platform for spatio-temporal streaming applications. © 2012 ACM.

One of the most challenging issues for nowadays Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is represented by the capability of self-powering the network sensor nodes by means of suitable Energy Harvesting (EH) techniques. However, the nature of such energy captured from the environment is often irregular and unpredictable and therefore some intelligence is required to efficiently use it for information processing at the sensor level. In particular in this work the authors address the problem of task scheduling in processors located in WSN nodes powered by EH sources. The authors' objective consists in employing a conservative scheduling paradigm in order to achieve a more efficient management of energy resources. To prove such a claim, the recently advanced Lazy Scheduling Algorithm (LSA) has been taken as reference and integrated with the automatic ability of foreseeing at runtime the task energy starving, i.e. the impossibility of finalizing a task due to the lack of power. The resulting technique, namely Energy Aware Lazy Scheduling Algorithm (EA-LSA), has then been tested in comparison with the original one and a relevant performance improvement has been registered in terms of number of executable tasks. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The challenges involved in designing a wireless Vision sensor Node include the reduction in processing and communication energy consumption, in order to maximize its lifetime. This work presents an architecture for a wireless Vision sensor Node, which consumes low processing and communication energy. The processing energy consumption is reduced by processing lightweight vision tasks on the VSN and by partitioning the vision tasks between the wireless Vision sensor Node and the server. The communication energy consumption is reduced with Region Of Interest coding together with a suitable bi-level compression scheme. A number of different processing strategies are investigated to realize a wireless Vision sensor Node with a low energy consumption. The investigation shows that the wireless Vision sensor Node, using Region Of Interest coding and CCITT group4 compression technique, consumes 43 percent lower processing and communication energy as compared to the wireless Vision sensor Node implemented without Region Of Interest coding. The proposed wireless Vision sensor Node can achieve a lifetime of 5.4 years, with a sample period of 5 minutes by using 4 AA batteries.

Given n points in a circular region C in the plane, we study the problem of moving these points to the boundary of C to form a regular n-gon such that the maximum of the Euclidean distances traveled by the points is minimized. These problems find applications in mobile sensor barrier coverage of wireless sensor networks. The problem further has two versions: the decision version and optimization version. In this paper, we present an O(n log2 n) time algorithm for the decision version and an O(n log3 n) time algorithm for the optimization version. The previously best algorithms for these two problem versions take O(n3.5) time and O(n3.5 log n) time, respectively. A by-product of our techniques is an algorithm for dynamically maintaining the maximum matching of a circular convex bipartite graph;our algorithm performs each vertex insertion or deletion on the graph in O(log 3.5 n) time. This result may be interesting in its own right. © Springer-Verlag 2012.

In this work we expose the challenges of interfacing both conventional and new systems with an extremely resource constrained platform. We find that even when attempts are made to utilize an industry standard protocol (I2C), necessary protocol modifications for ultra-low power design means that interfacing remains non-trivial. We present a functional 0.4mm × 0.8mm ARM Cortex M0 with 3KB of RAM, 24 GPIOs, and an ultra-low power I2C interface. This chip is part of the Michigan Micro Mote (M3) project, which is designed to build a complete software and hardware platform for general purpose sensing at the millimeter scale. We demo an I2C interface circuit allowing commercial hardware to program and interact with the chip and present the beginning of the millimeter scale sensing revolution.

Similarity-based search has been a hot research topic for a long history, which is widely used in many applications. The large scale Restricted Floating sensor(RFS) network is an important mod-el in offshore data collection [1]. Due to the mobility and the large number of sensors, improved techniques are needed to deal with uncertainty and mass queries. As a theoretical basis, this paper constructs a new fuzzy similarity measure based on distance. With examples we illustrate that many common similarity functions can be constructed from these measures. From [2] we know our work over distance and similarity is a reasonable generalization and extension of other Fuzzy Sets. This work provides a theoretical guidance for constructing a fuzzy query processing strategy for our RFS networks.

Commercial optical human motion capture systems perform well in studio-like environments, but they do not provide solution in daily-life surroundings. Micro-sensor motion capture has shown its potentials because of its ubiquity and low cost. We present an ambulatory low-cost real-time motion capture system using wearable micro-sensors (accelerometers, magnetometers and gyroscopes), which can capture and reconstruct human motion in real-time almost every-where. It mainly consists of three parts: a sensor subsystem, a data fusion subsystem and an animation subsystem. The sensor subsystem collects human motion signals and transfers them into the data fusion subsystem. The data fusion subsystem performs sensor fusion to obtain motion information, i.e., the orientation and position of each body segment. Using the motion information from the data fusion subsystem, the animation subsystem drives the avatar in the 3D virtual world in order to reconstruct human motion. All the processes are accomplished in real-time. The experimental results show that our system can capture motions and drive animations in real-time vividly without drift and delay. And the output from our system can be made use of in film-making, sports training and argument reality applications, etc.

To allow for rapid abstract development of algorithms, model-based tools are often used nowadays. These tools support design using predefined blocks, adaptation using parameters, simulation in a virtual environment and also generation of code for programming embedded devices. However, there is usually no direct connection between the embedded system and the model for programming and runtime control and monitoring. In this paper, we present a seamless tool chain for modelbased algorithm development, simulation and integration on an embedded system as well as runtime control and monitoring from model level. Based on our concept, the development of algorithms can largely be separated from the execution platform and its control and monitoring possibilities. Yet, it is possible to feedback monitored data to support the simulation. The concept is integrated and evaluated and its applicability for the development of an algorithm is demonstrated by means of an example from the field of wireless senor networks localization. We conclude that the outlined approach offers a simple opportunity to reduce development overhead.

In cellular networks coordination among base stations (BSs) has been recognized as an important solution to handle inter-cell interference and increase spectral efficiency. In frequency division duplex systems one of the main issue that sensibly degrades the performance of coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission techniques is the imperfect channel state information (CSI) due to the limited bandwidth available for the feedback transmission. In this paper we focus on a CoMP scenario with data and CSI sharing among the BSs and we consider a feedback transmission scheme where each user equipment (UE) quantizes the different channels by using codebooks designed for a single-cell scenario. Due to the different propagation characteristics of the channels between a UE and each BS and by considering a constraint on the number of available feedback bits, we propose two practical algorithms depending on the large-scale fading to a) select the subset of BSs from whom the UE prefers to be served and b) optimize the number of feedback bits allocated to each channel. The developed techniques allow a UE to send more feedback bits to the BSs with a stronger signal and numerical results show the merits of the proposed approach.
