In dynamic spectrum access networks, spectrum sensing plays a key role in determining the reliability and efficiency of opportunistic spectrum utilization. However, when treating the transmission over a licensed bandwidth as a black box, most energy detection-based sensing methods lack the ability of adapting the sensor to the changes in channel condition. This paper introduces a feedback mechanism into the cooperative sensing framework for estimating the channel SNR and adapting the detector's parameters. The feedback mechanism provides information to local nodes that is used to dynamically control the decision threshold and maintain a stable performance level when channel condition changes. In this framework, the problem of balancing the channel detection opportunity and the interference risk is formulated by an optimization procedure based on a proposed weighted cost function. A queuing model of the primary user activity is employed to predict the channel state and assist grouping the detection samples for estimating the channel characteristics. Such an estimation mechanism requires no complex design and little a priori knowledge of the primary network. Simulation results show that the cooperative scheme improve performance from local decisions and that the introduction of a feedback mechanism results in a notable performance improvement over all schemes. ©2010 IEEE.

In the field of e-science stream data processing is common place facilitating sensor networks, in particular for prediction and supporting decision making. However, sensor data may be erroneous, like e.g. due to measurement errors (outliers) or changes of the environment. While it can be foreseen that there will be outliers, there are a lot of environmental changes which are not foreseen by scientists and therefore are not considered in the data processing. However, these unforeseen semantic changes - represented as annotations-have to be propagated through the processing. Since the annotations represent an unforeseen, hence un-understandable, annotation, the propagation has to be independent of the annotation semantics. It nevertheless has to preserve the significance of the annotation on the data despite structural and temporal transformations. And should remain meaningful for a user at the end of the data processing. In this paper, we identify the relevant research questions. In particular, the propagation of annotations is based on structural, temporal, and significance contribution. While the consumption of the annotation by the user is focusing on clustering information to ease accessibility. © 2010 ACM.

Physical world event monitoring and detection are two of the most dominating applications of wireless sensor networks. Combining sensor networks with artificial intelligence and pattern recognition is envisaged to deliver smart application to end-users. In this paper, a new distributed energy efficient pattern recognition approach is proposed to first depict events of interest as patterns and then detect the occurrence of events of interest, namely: the Voting with Random Node Selection (VRNS) approach. sensor nodes may leverage their processing and storage capabilities by collectively handling sensory data to translate local sensory information of individual sensor nodes into meaningful results that depict the global status of the environment. In contrast to classical pattern recognition approaches, the VRNS approach operates within the constrained sensor network’s resources and infrastructures. Instead of utilising the entire sensor network, events of interest are recognised by employing an arbitrary sample of sensor nodes. The results show that the VRNS approach is capable of prolonging the longevity of the network’s lifetime, recognising event patterns effectively, and avoiding over-utilisation hotspots in the network. © 2010, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The change in age-structure of a society, leaves many countries facing a problem. The rapid rising numbers of senior citizen and care-taking personnel numbers can't match the problems and needs of these citizens. Use of smart, ubiquitous technologies can offer ways in coping with the need of more nursing staff and the rising costs of taking care of senior citizens for the society. Helping senior citizens with a novel, easy to use interface that guides and helps could improve their quality of living and enable them to participate more in daily activities. This paper presents a projection-based display system for elderly people with memory impairments and the proposed user interface for the system. The users process recognition based on a sensor network is also described. Elderly people wearing the system can interact with the projected user interface by tapping physical surfaces (such as walls, tables or doors) using them as a natural, haptic feedback input surface. ©2010 IEEE.

Broadcast is very important for delivering messages in wireless sensor networks. In order to improve the efficiency of broadcast and reduce energy consumption, it is necessary to construct a virtual backbone within the entire network. Constructing a virtual backbone is identical with calculating connected dominating set. 1-hop neighbor node transmission coverage information is used to calculate the minimum forwarding set distributively on each node of the network, and then the method of broadcasting information of minimal forwarding set is used to construct a connected dominating set. 1-hop neighbor transmission coverage information based distributed algorithm for connected dominating set is designed to get a small connected dominating set, while minimizing the cost of energy and time in the implementation of the algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm has achieved its purpose, fast convergence, low transmission traffic and reasonable connected dominating set. © 2010 IEEE.

In order to evaluate the robot performance more objectively,and provide basis for the robot performance evaluation criteria,the robot performance testing platform is designed. Its mechanical structure is formed with four pressure sensors and a rigid plate. Its single-chip microcomputer control system is formed with the MSP430F149 single-chip and some expansion peripheral circuits. And the PC management software is developmented with Visual Basic6.0 and Access 2003 database. The platform can complete the data acquisition and management of the robot move status, and the algorithm which can transform the robot running data into the robot performance data is designed. The performance information can be display, analysis, processing and storage by the PC management software. The RS-232 cable and Zigbee wireless conmmunication interface circuits are designed,and they can be choosed for the communication between the upper and lower machines. The results of system test verify the feasibility and accuracy of the design.

The study of wireless sensor networks (WSN) recently has drawn a lot of attention. Such networks are composed of a large number of tiny wireless sensors, which have limited calculating capability as well as limited power typically supplied by microelectronics hardware. How to prolong network lifetime while maintaining a sufficient sensing area has been one of the most important issues in WSN research. In a high-density environment of sensor networks, excessive working sensors could cause several problems, such as excessive sensing or channel congestion. In this paper, we present a novel approach to partition sensors in the WSN, called node coverage grouping (NCG). sensors in the connectivity group are within sensing range of each other, and data collected by sensors in a connectivity group are assumed to be similar. In this paper, we also prove that partitioning n nodes by node coverage grouping into connectivity groups is a NP-hard problem. Then we propose a heuristic algorithm of node coverage grouping with the time complexity of O(n3). The experimental results show that the NCG outperforms the LDAS and the PEAS methods in terms of the number of living nodes, the number of working nodes, and the coverage with the proceeding of system lifetime. © 2010 IEEE.

With the rapid development of computer communication and web technology, especially the widely application of wireless sensor and embedded technology, Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been paid great attention in industry field and our daily life. WSNs based on ARM7TDMI-S CPU and ZigBee device has merit of rapid and simple in networking, node movable in application, abundant information in acquisition, real time collaboration in communication, low power consumption in continuous operation, so it is very suitable for targeting miner's position underground. In this paper, networking scheme of the WSN is presented, and distributed information processing, communication technology and real time collaboration are focused on. Miner's information in mobile is obtained accurately by sensor. After that position information is transmitted reliably to monitoring center. Test result in continuous operation shows there is no information loss or undetected. Therefore this scheme is stable and effective, which will play a positive role for security in coal mine by right of characteristics of Zigbee WSNs in my opinion. © 2010 IEEE.

WSN network is energy constrained, the energy consumption of the network has stringent limited. During design routing protocols, Energy issues is important factors to be considered. Without increasing send energy of nodes, MIMO technology can make use of the cumulative energy of the sending node to increase the sending signal to noise ratio, thus reducing the error rate and improve the reliability of data communication, In the same transmit power and bit error rate situations, Using MIMO technology can provide higher data rates, reducing the node sending time, thereby reducing the forward node processing and communication cost. In this paper, Based on dynamic collaborative virtual antenna MIMO technology, a new energy efficient routing protocol is proposed. In the specific application environment, Simulation shows that the protocol has better energy efficiency. © 2010 IEEE.

A context-aware service that uses sensing data has attracted attention, along with the development of wireless technology and sensor technology. To provide these services, the sensing data sharing system in P2P networks needs to cope with a vast amount of data. However, existing algorithms do not respond to varying the number of sensing data types. In addition, most existing algorithms cannot execute reverse key resolutions because their search algorithms need to include specific data as the key in the query. To address these issues, we propose a multi-dimensional range search algorithm in P2P networks that uses a B+tree for an efficient search with an arbitrary number of sensing data types. © 2010 IEEE.
