This work develops a 2 Dimension (2D)/3 Dimension (3D)-integrated image sensor that adopts the same photodiode under different biased voltages and integrated sensing circuitry. By using the TSMC CMOS technology, four different photodiodes, N-well_P-substrate, P-diffusion_N-well, Pdiffusion_N-well_P-substrate and N-diffusion_P-substrate, are available. Since P-substrate is used for grounding and P-diffusion_N-well has poor quantum efficiency, only the photodiode of P-diffusion_N-well_P-substrate can be employed by biasing two different voltages to P-diffusion. If the photodiode is driven by little smaller than its breakdown voltage, it functions at the Geiger mode to work for 3D depth sensing. Otherwise, this photodiode performs 2-D gray-level sensing. In the sensing circuitry, a feed-back mechanism is employed to yield a charge supply for a high dynamic range of 2-D sensing, and a feed-back inverter is adopted to boost the processing speed of 3-D sensing. These two feedbacks are effectively integrated in an active pixel to establish 2D/3D image sensor. Based on the TSMC 0.35 mu m 2P4M technology, a 352x288-pixel 2D/3D image sensor was implemented where its dynamic range can reach 134dB under photocurrents from 10-13A to 5x10-7A and sensing time can be accelerated to 16.3ns. The proposed image sensor can effectively capture 2D and 3D information of an object at the same location without additional alignment and post-processing.

The development of robust condition monitoring system for a machine tool spindle is an important task because the spindle has a significant effect on the processing quality. This paper presents the architecture of data acquisition system for detecting spindle vibration in turning processes in order to develop an on-line condition monitoring system. In this work, a solar-powered wireless sensor system is installed inside the spindle and is used to monitor the machine tool processing state in real time, thereby improving the processing quality. Accelerometer sensors are employed to estimate tool wear;these sensors monitor the vibration of the spindle. The vibration monitoring data of the high-speed spindle is wirelessly transmitted to an external information device in real time. As an alternative to sensors that employ wired power transmission, a solar energy transmission system has been developed to provide the required electric power to the sensor system. The experimental results show that the proposed system successfully measures the vibration frequency of the rotational machine tool spindle.

This paper describes wireless wearable and ambient sensors that cooperate to monitor a person's vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure during daily activities. Each wearable sensor is attached on different parts of the body. The wearable sensors require a high sampling rate and time synchronization to provide a precise analysis of the received signals. The trigger signal for synchronization is provided by the ambient sensors, which detect the user's presence. As wireless technologies, Bluetooth and IEEE 802.15.4 are used for real-time sensing and time synchronization. Thus, this wearable health-monitoring sensor response is closely related to the context in which it is being used. Experimental results indicate that the system simultaneously provides information about the user's location and vital signs, and the synchronized wearable sensors successfully measures vital signs with a 1 ms resolution.

For applications in robotics the simulator is conceived as a kernel upon which one may build up additional software modules to generate various navigation scenarios. Broadcast is very important for delivering messages in wireless sensornetworks. In order to improve the efficiency of broadcast and reduce energy consumption, it is necessary to construct a virtual backbone within the entire network. Constructing a virtual backbone is identical with calculating connected dominating set. 1-hop neighbor node transmission coverage information is used to calculate the minimum forwarding set distributively on each node of the network, and then the method of broadcasting information of minimal forwarding set is used to construct a connected dominating set. 1-hop neighbor transmission coverage information based distributed algorithm for connected dominating set is designed to get a small connected dominating set, while minimizing the cost of energy and time in the implementation of the algorithm. The simulation results show that the algorithm has achieved its purpose, fast convergence, low transmission traffic and reasonable connected dominating set.

Wireless sensornetworks are an important research area that has attracted a lot of attention in the past few years. Most of this attention, however, has focused on wireless sensor network collect scalar data such as temperature and vibration. Scalar data is insufficient for many applications such as video surveillance and traffic monitoring. Whereas, camera sensors collect video data, which are rich in information and offer tremendous potential when used in wireless sensornetworks. Video sensornetworks continue to gain increase interest due to their ability to collect video information for a wide range of applications in recent years. However, knowledge about these types of networks is mostly related to visual algorithms, leaving the issues such as the coverage of video sensor network and the transmission of video data aside. In this paper, we first highlight the issues and opportunities of video sensor network. And then we discuss key research issue on video sensor network, specifically camera coverage problem, network architecture, and low-power video data processing and communication. Finally, we identify enabling approaches in this area.
