Distributed simulation techniques are commonly used to improve the speed and scalability of wireless sensor network simulators. However, accurate simulations of dynamic interactions of sensor network applications incur large synchronization overheads and severely limit the performance of existing distributed simulators. In this paper, we present two novel techniques that significantly reduce such overheads by minimizing the number of sensor node synchronizations during simulations. These techniques work by exploiting radio and MAC specific characteristics without reducing simulation accuracy. In addition, we present a new probing mechanism that makes it possible to exploit any potential application specific characteristics for synchronization reductions. We implement and evaluate these techniques in a cycle accurate distributed simulation framework that we developed based on Avrora. In our experiments, the radio-level technique achieves a speedup of 2 to 3 times in simulating 1-hop networks with 32 to 256 nodes. With default backoffs, the MAC-level technique achieves a speedup of 1.1 to 1.3 times in the best case scenarios of simulating 32 and 64 nodes. In our multi-hop flooding tests, together they achieve a speedup of 1.5 to 1.8 times in simulating networks with 36 to 144 nodes. The experiments also demonstrate that the speedups can be significantly larger as the techniques scale with the number of processors and radio-off/MAC-backoff time.

As a novel information acquiring and processing technology, compared to other traditional sensor networks, wireless multimedia sensor networks pay more attention to the information-intensive data (e.g. audio, video, image). Potential applications of wireless multimedia sensor networks span a wide spectrum from military to industrial, from commercial to environmental monitoring, This paper discusses QoS routing problem model with multiple QoS constraints, which may deal with the delay, delay jitter and bandwidth, and presents QoS routing algorithm with multiple constraints based oil genetic algorithm, and gives the algorithm idiographic flow. Simulating results show that higher routing successful ratio and faster convergence is achieved in the algorithm.

Real-time multimedia applications are time sensitive and require extra resources from the network, e.g. large bandwidth and big memory. However, Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) suffer from limited resources such as computational, storage, and bandwidth capabilities. Therefore, sending real-time multimedia applications over WSNs can be very challenging. For this reason, we propose an Adaptive Multi-flows Real-time Multimedia Transport Protocol (AdamRTP) that has the ability to ease the process of transmitting real-time multimedia over WSNs by splitting the multimedia source stream into smaller independent flows using an MDC-aware encoder, then sending each flow to the destination using joint/disjoint path(s). AdamRTP uses also dynamic adaptation techniques, e.g. changing number of flows and rate adaptation. Simulations experiments demonstrate that AdamRTP enhances the Quality of Service (QoS) of the data transmission. Also, we show that in an ideal WSN, using multi-flows consumes less power per node than using a single flow and extends the life-time of the network

The Flooding Zone Initialization Protocol (FZIP) was proposed as a mechanism to provide power efficient flooding for real-time multimedia data over Wireless sensor networks (WSNs). FZIP can initialize different FZ sizes with different performance levels (i.e. loss rate, latency, and overhead). Increasing the FZ size increases redundancy which in turn reduces packet loss but consumes extra power overhead. However, how to choose a suitable FZ size poses a tradeoff between packet loss rate and power efficiency under different network sizes, densities, and radio channel conditions. The static FZ size estimation under dynamic WSNs' conditions leads to unnecessary power overhead or fail to deliver good quality resulting in high packet loss rate. In this paper, we propose the Flooding Zone Control Protocol (FZCP) to overcome this problem. FZCP monitors the incoming multimedia packets to detect performance deterioration and change the FZ size (increase/decrease) accordingly. Simulation results show that FZCP enhances the flooding performance and delivers and maintains good quality of real-time multimedia sessions with low energy overhead.

sensor network application experts such as biologists, geologists, and environmental engineers generally have little experience with, and little patience for, general-purpose and often low-level sensor network programming languages. We believe sensor network languages should be designed for application experts, who may not be expert programmers. To further that goal, we propose the concepts of sensor network application archetypes, archetype-specific languages, and archetype templates. Our work makes the following contributions. (1) We have examined a wide range of wireless sensor networks to develop a taxonomy of seven archetypes. This taxonomy permits the design of compact languages that are appropriate for novice programmers. (2) We developed a language (named WASP) and its associated compiler for a commonly encountered archetype. (3) We conducted user studies to evaluate the suitability of WASP and several alternatives for novice programmers. To the best of our knowledge, this 56-hour 28-user study is the first to evaluate a broad range of sensor network languages (TinyScript, TinySQL, SwissQM, and TinyTemplate). On average, users of other languages successfully implemented their assigned applications 30.6% of the time. Among the successful completions, the average development time was 21.7 minutes. Users of WASP had an average success rate of 80.6%, and an average development time of 12.1 minutes (an improvement of 44.4%).

Drowsiness of driver while driving is one major factor of traffic accident. Therefore, there are many researches to prevent and detect drowsy driving. Recent researches have focused on motion detection using cameras to determine drowsy driving. However, we have focused on non-invasive and inexpensive drowsiness detection system. In our previous research, we suggested a system based on the driver's head movement using infrared sensors. In this paper, we suggest another non-invasive and inexpensive system based on the driver's pulse wave by photoplethysmography (PPG) signal processing. Firstly, the system collects a pulse wave from a PPG sensor on a steering wheel and then it processes the signal to analyze driver's state. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of a human pulse wave for drowsiness detection, we integrated two systems. The experimental result using new integration system showed 83 percent drowsy driving detection rate in the state of real driving. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Embedded sensor networks are distributed systems for sensing and in situ processing of spatially and temporally dense data from resource-limited and harsh environments such as seismic zones, ecological contamination sites are battle fields. From an application point of view, many interesting questions arise from sensor network technology that go far beyond the networking/computing aspects of the embedded system. This talk presents an overview of various open problems that are both of mathematical and engineering interests. In this paper, a pioneering platform is introduced, which utilizes all the advantages of CPLDs in order to enhance the processing power of the sensor nodes and, more importantly, significantly reduce the overall energy consumption in heavy demanding tasks such as routing and header processing. This new platform, accelerates the cost estimation algorithm of the XMesh routing protocol by 606 times. At the same time, and more importantly, there is a reduction in the measured energy consumption by 97%. Moreover, the proposed system can accelerate by three orders of magnitude the header checksum calculation scheme, while it consumes 96.33% less energy than the corresponding standard software implementations. Since this is the first time ever that such a hardware-based scheme is used in a WSN environment, we strongly believe that this paper can be a first reference for a new design paradigm for WSN nodes which will include CPLDs for the actual data/network processing.
