Proactive routing protocols are mainly used in mobile networks since they are capable to distribute recent information very quickly. However, even reactive and hybrid protocols can be modified to achieve high end-to-end reliability in mobile networks while not increasing the end-to-end delay in a significant way. In this paper the performance of ad-hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV), optimized link state routing (OLSR), and the statistic-based routing (SBR) is simulated in various mobile scenarios with different traffic patterns. The protocols are compared with respect to reliability and routing overhead. The results show that the hybrid SBR protocol is able to achieve a high end-to-end reliability without frequent end-to-end route calculations or a large amount of overhead.

The fast improvements in a variety of technologies such as microprocessing, sensing material, and most importantly wireless technology resulted in development of the wireless sensor network technology. Wireless sensors that can be either implantable inside the human body or wearable by individuals are called the wireless biosensors. The wireless biosensors are used to gather real time and continuous medical data from different parts of the human beings. This medical data is typically sent to an external sensor and then to its associated destination where data processing and a final decision is carried out. Due to nature of medical data and their usage, ensuring the security of this data is extremely important. There are several limitations associated with biosensor networks such as limitation in power, memory, computation capability, and communication rate which makes the wireless biosensor security a real challenging problem. These security challenges form substantial barriers for the wide adoption of the technology. Biometrics approach is an efficient way to overcome the insecurity of the wireless biosensor networks. In this paper, we will look at how biometrics has helped securing data in wireless biosensor networks, and present the remaining challenges to have a workable biometric-based security framework for wireless biosensor networks.

In this paper, we present PGS, a parking guidance system based on wireless sensor network(WSN) which guides a driver to an available parking lot. The system consists of a WSN-based VDS(vehicle detection sub-system) and a management sub-system. The WSN based VDS gathers information on the availability of each parking lot and the management sub-system processes the information and refines them and guides the driver to the available parking lot by controlling a VMS(Variable Messaging System). The paper describes the overall system architecture of PGS from the hardware platform to the application software in the view point of a WSN. We implemented the WSN based VDS of PGS and experimented on the system with several kinds of cars. The experimental results show that PGS succeeds in detecting various kinds of cars and the predicted battery life-time using measured current profiles is over 5 years.

information sharing and provision in the vehicular field is nowadays a growing research topic in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Although a lot of work is being carried out in these terms, the most of the approximations are based on local solutions which solve a particular problem. Communication protocols are proposed to exchange information among vehicles in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), monitoring centres provide information about traffic, advertising mechanisms send location-based notifications about local shops. The system presented in this paper proposes an integrated infrastructure for information sharing in both local and global schemes. Using a novel communication paradigm based on cellular and peer to peer (P2P) networks, traffic information is shared among close vehicles and sent to a core infrastructure for a global processing. This centralized system is able to provide not only traffic events, but also general context-aware information adapted to the userpsilas preferences. The complete design has been developed over a whole prototype, considering both hardware and software requirements.

A study on the feasibility of applying database correlation methods to locate mobile stations (MSs) within a live GSM cellular network is presented. The mobile station's signal strength values, extracted from the periodic MS measurement reports at the Abis interface, were correlated with the values obtained from a radio network coverage prediction tool, available at the operator's premises, to predict the user's location. The main advantage of this solution is that it uses information that already resides, or is being exchanged, within the network and does not necessitate any additional hardware in the infrastructure. The results obtained were compared with actual road tests, utilizing global positioning systems (GPS), to determine the error of the system. The resulting error correlates well with other studies which do not use dedicated location detection infrastructures.

This paper presents a privacy protection scheme, suitable for devices limited in CPU and/or in memory capabilities, which not only ensures anonymity and confidentiality but has also a limited impact on end-to-end network performance. Such an approach for anonymous communications, inspired by network coding techniques, benefits from recent improvements in list decoding algorithms for Reed-Solomon codes, and takes advantage of multi-path routing capabilities. The combination of these techniques is adapted for constrained and pervasive environments, such as wireless ad hoc networks, as it decreases the processing complexity of the cryptographic/decoding operations and as it ensures better tolerance to packet losses (due to mobility or to bad quality of the radio channel).

Approximate replication of data is a technique commonly used in distributed systems where the exact value from the source (client) is not required at the destination (server), rather a fairly accurate estimate of the actual data is sufficient for the end application to infer a result. A Wireless sensor Network (WSN) is a special case of distributed system where energy is the prime concern governing its life span. Approximate replication when deployed inWSN causes heavy energy savings if the application at the sink is intelligent enough to deduce the result from an estimate of actual sensed data. The crux of approximate replication is the adaptation and prediction mechanisms that cause the sensing node to transmit only a subset of actual sensed data. In this paper, we have modified the traditional approach of approximate replication through coordinating filters, by deploying different adaptive algorithms at the sink and the node. We have also modified the existing model by properly initializing the filter parameters to facilitate faster convergence, whenever there is a change in the working mode of the model. We also bring about some changes in the LMS algorithm to make sure that it suits to the prediction conditions of the approximate replication platform. In the end we have demonstrated by means of simulation that the new modifications achieve better energy savings than the existing peer models by reducing the size of the subset of the information transmitted.

We develop and analyze expressions on the required instantaneous signal-to-noise ratios for wireless relay networks in this paper. Two basic schemes are studied, namely the one-relay case and the two-relay case. The latter can further be divided into a two-phase and a three-phase scheme, respectively. In the two-phase scheme both relays are only allowed to transmit with half the power in order to ensure fair comparison between the different schemes. Moreover, for the one-relay case and the two-phase scheme, each terminal must serve double the target rate, whereas in the three-phase scheme, each terminal has to serve three times the target rate to ensure that the amount of transmitted information remains constant. We show the following correspondences when decode-and-forward relaying and selection combining is applied in Rayleigh fading environments: For the one-relay case γ ∝ 1/{the square root of}Pout and for both two-relay schemes γ ∝ 1/{the square root of}Pout{sup}(1/3). We further show that an increase in data rate of 1bit/s/Hz results in a required increase of signal-to-noise ratio of 6 dB for the one-relay case and the two-phase two-relay scheme, and an increase of 9 dB for the three-phase two-relay scheme.

This paper describes a simple but effective concept in cognitive networks that provides awareness on the radio environment through geo-localized interference measurements: the interference cartography. The purpose of this novel concept is to combine location information with radio measurements carried out over the heterogeneous radio environment, and to provide a complete view of the environment to be used in autonomous decision making in a cognitive context. This is achieved by aggregating the already existing radio measurements that circulate in wireless networks forming the heterogeneous network panorama, combining this aggregated information with geo-localization information, performing advanced signal processing techniques to render the information complete and reliable, and updating the information to provide a viable picture of the environment for efficient detection, analysis and decision. Our focus is on hierarchical access models where licensed spectrum can be accessed by secondary users without creating harmful interference on the primaries. A complete description of a possible network implementation in a hierarchical access scheme is given, with a centralized architecture and a protocol structure that complies with the utilization of interference cartography. A case study of the proposed scheme is also given, demonstrating the utility of the notion of interference cartography.

In this paper we consider the differentiated coverage problem for heterogeneous sensor networks over a finite planning horizon consisting of discrete time intervals. The goal is to determine optimal locations of sensors and sinks, activity schedules of the deployed sensors, and sensor-to-sink data routes subject to coverage, flow conservation, energy consumption and budget constraints with the objective of maximizing the network lifetime. We first give a mixed-integer linear programming formulation. Since this formulation is difficult to be solved exactly even for small instances, we propose a heuristic that first finds connected sensor sets with minimum cost satisfying the coverage constraint, and then determines optimal sensor-to-sink data routes with optimal flow quantities maximizing the lifetime of the sensor sets. Computational experiments performed on various test instances indicate that the heuristic is very efficient and quite accurate.
