In this paper, we propose a simulation-based analysis of the impact of data fusion mechanisms in a Zigbee sensor network used to monitor a spatially constant binary phenomenon. The performance indicators of interest are both physical layer-oriented (Bit Error Rate, BER) and networking-oriented (throughput, delay, and aggregate throughput). The considered topologies encompass both the absence and the presence of clustering. In the first class of scenarios, we analyze the impact, on the system performance, of the number of transmitting sensors, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at the sensors, and the presence of ACKnowledgment (ACK) messages. In the second class of scenarios, instead, we analyze the BER performance, in the presence of uniform and non-uniform clustering configurations. Data fusion is considered at the Access Point (AP) and, in clustered configurations, also at the clusterheads, which act as intermediate Fusion Centers (FCs). To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to characterize a Zigbee sensor network from a joint physical layer/networking perspective. Moreover, the proposed simulation results confirm recently obtained theoretical results.

In modern vehicles an increasing number of control systems is based on measurements of signals describing vehicle dynamics. Correspondingly, a large number of sensors is required. To spare on weight and even more important on costs, car manufacturers require joint processing of sensors, i.e. the individual sensors related to certain control systems should become part of a sensor network. In the paper at hand the possibilities and shortcomings of such an approach are examined from a sensor monitoring and estimation perspective. Especially, redundant and model based failure detection are considered. The focus is on signals and sensors related to vehicle dynamics and the corresponding question of fall back strategies in case of sensor failure. Corresponding problems are addressed by a suitable sensor network architecture.

Most current and upcoming communication systems like 802.11x, WiMAX etc. deploy some variant of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing as their physical layer technology. Symbol timing acquisition is the first operation performed at the receiver after which other signal processing, such as orthogonalizing the received data into parallel streams using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), can take place. To ensure reliable communication, extensive work has been done in designing robust algorithms that estimate the symbol timing with high accuracy. Most of these works assume that there is some total bandwidth which is utilized by a single user. However in future cognitive radio systems, the spectrum access will be dynamic and multiple devices in a geographical region will sense a common pool of spectrum for the presence of vacant frequency bands to transmit in. In the OFDM context, this means that a device may transmit in non contiguous tones (termed as Non- Contiguous OFDM or NC-OFDM). It is not clear how the existing symbol timing acquisition algorithms will perform in this situation. The current research around cognitive radios is mostly focused on the sensing and resource allocation aspects but to our knowledge the symbol timing acquisition issues have not yet been studied. In this work we study the performance of cyclic prefix correlation based symbol timing acquisition algorithms for NC-OFDM transmission. We first derive the ML estimator when the channel is frequency non-selective and show that it has high computational complexity. Consequently we study the performance of low complexity, sub-optimal approaches both for frequency non-selective and frequency selective channels. Our simulations indicate that in some likely situations such as the users occupying multiple discontiguous sub-bands and having large differences in the timing offsets between their transmitters and receivers, cyclic prefix based timing acquisition algorithms can perform quite poorly. In this paper, we extend our CPU-scheduling algorithm [1] which is based on topology information of the network. In wireless sensor network applications, the nodes closer to the network's central point have to perform forwarding operations. Concurrently, they also have to process their own sensing packets. In high rate application, such nodes suffer from CPU overloading. In the priority scheduling scheme [2], which solves the overloading in simple FIFO CPU-scheduling in wireless sensor nodes, it is not ensured that these nodes will have fair chance to process their local sensing packets if the forwarding operations will be prioritized over their local processing. To guarantee processing and then sending the local packets, we introduce the scheme of switching in the priority according to the routing information in such nodes, so that they are able to complete their local tasks also. Our proposal enhances the fairness of the distributed sensing.

This paper proposes two main techniques for reduce computational complexity on Artificial Neural networks, using piecewise linear activation function, and Support Vector Machines built on a probability based binary tree. These methods are compared with well-known classifiers based on the computational complexity, correct rate and time taken to process the required information. The results show that probability based binary tree SVM has an equivalent recognition rate and is faster than ANNs.

This paper addresses the design and performance evaluation of an interference canceller for frequency reuse satellite communications in a channel containing a nonlinear device. In this study, a reference simulator has been developed for the evaluation of an interference canceller for P-MP (Point to Multi-Point) satellite networks. In the interference canceller, a precise replica of an unwanted signal has to be generated in order to cancel it. However, nonlinear device causes the difference between the unwanted signal and the replica in the transmission path. Another potential degradation due to nonlinearity is that the superposed signal is affected by the intermodulation of both wanted and unwanted carriers. By the evaluation of this study, it has been proved that carrier super-positioning is feasible even in the nonlinear channel by properly taking the back off of the satellite transponder to minimize BER performance.

This paper deals with the problem of estimating the state of a discrete-time linear Gaussian stochastic dynamical system subject to a limitation on the communication rate from the remote sensor unit. More specifically, the attention is devoted to a 2-node network consisting of: (1) a remote node S which collects measurements of the given system, computes optimal state estimates at the full measurement rate and transmits them at a reduced communication rate;(2) a local node F that, based on received estimates, provides an estimate of the system state at the full rate. A measurement-independent strategy for deciding when transmitting estimates from S to F will be considered. Sufficient conditions for the boundedness of the state covariance at node F will be given. Further, it will be shown that the optimal communication strategy for a given rate is characterized by an upper bound on the time between consecutive transmissions.

We present a wearable IEEE 802.15.4-based Body sensor Network (BSN) that enables continuous cuff-less blood pressure monitoring, opening up new perspectives for hypertension diagnosis and treatment, cardio-vascular event detection, and stress monitoring. Arterial blood pressure is estimated based on the Pulse Arrival Time (PAT), which is measured using a single lead electrocardiogram (ECG) patch on the chest and a photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor at the finger or ear. Measurement context information-user posture and activity level-is extracted using a 3-D acceleration sensor. Since precise PAT measurements require the synchronization of the BSN devicespsila clocks, the Flooding Time Synchronization Protocol (FTSP) was implemented. The acquired data are stored and displayed on a PDA or a wristwatch. Our BSN can currently operate for up to eight hours and perform PAT measurements under moderate activity conditions. Future work includes higher motion tolerance, posture-corrected blood pressure estimation and on-sensor data processing and storage.

We consider a network that comprises a group of K users, equipped with single-antenna terminals, who want to selfishly maximize their individual transmission rates and S single-antenna base stations. The information rates and the transmit power levels of the users are not dictated by the base stations. In this context we introduce the problem of decentralized handovers: each terminal is equipped with a cognitive radio used to sense the quality of its links with the different base stations and share, in a smart way, its transmit power among them. In the hard handover case, for which there is a unique stable Nash equilibrium, we determine the selfish repartition of the users between the base stations and then we assess its social efficiency, which is measured in terms of sum-rate. In the soft handover case, the problem consists in determining the optimum selfish power allocation for each user and analyzing its sum-rate efficiency with respect to the equivalent virtual K × S multiple input multiple output (MIMO) network. We also show how to extend the provided results to the case of multi-antenna terminals and base stations and provide simulations to illustrate the presented results.

The Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) can not only increase significantly the bandwidth of backbone transmission network, but also reduce the network cost and simplify the controlling and maintaining of transmissions. Applications of many-to-many multicast communication, such as Video on Demand and Video Conferencing, are important on the Internet. The characteristics of many-to-many multicast communication are massive data, transmission from different sources in the same multicast session and real-time transmission. This work proposes a novel high-performance algorithm called virtual 2D Torus Topology Conversion-Two-hop virtual rings routing-EAC wavelength assignment algorithm (TTCA-TVRR-EAC) for many-to-many multicast communications. The TTCA-TVRR-EAC has the following features: (1) the TTCA algorithm is employed to convert real networks into torus networks;(2) the TVRR algorithm is utilized for routing and (3) the EAC algorithm is used for wavelength assignment. Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (TWDM) is used for the scheduling algorithm to proceed on transmission of packets in two phases: the control phase and the data phase. The token is used in the control phase prior to data transmission. The proposed algorithm can use the bandwidth efficiently and has the proper time complexity for real-time communication.
