This paper presents the e-SENSE middleware architecture for distributed processing of context information in dynamic wireless sensornetworks. At the lower layer, sensor nodes organize into clusters spontaneously based on shared context. These clusters form the basis for the service-oriented processing layer, where the functionality of the sensor network is expressed using service task graphs supporting distributed execution of applications. The higher layer is responsible for complex context inference and recognition. As a concrete example we evaluate the distributed recognition of human activities in a car assembly process.

AirSenseWare, a sensor-network middleware that provides abstraction models to user applications is described. The abstract modeling and its event-delivering mechanism let a user handle the real world model, instead of a sensor node itself and hide its unexpected dynamic behaviour such as node adding, removing, and position changes. These abstraction models are shareable, which leads the cooperative construction of the real world model. AirSenseWare also serves the application independent maintenance services that lead the easy maintenance for large-scale sensor network infrastructure.

This work is a survey on the usage of machine learning techniques in wireless sensornetworks (WSNs) and mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). Its focus lies on approaches for data routing. The goal of the work is two-fold: first, to classify and evaluate the most important existing and on-going research in the area and, second, to provide a guide for researchers wanting to apply machine learning techniques. For this, it also gives short description of the most appropriate algorithms and suggests for which scenarios they can be best used.

sensors are swiftly finding their way into real-world applications, from farming to factory floor monitoring. In parallel with this deployment, several standards are being developed to extend greater interoperability between sensor systems. In this paper, we explore a subset of the various sensor standards, and relate our experiences in attempting to integrate some of these standards for the purposes of developing an autonomic context manager.

Wireless sensornetworks for outdoor applications, such as habitat monitoring, are expected to require wireless link ranges that are longer than achievable with commonly available platforms. We discuss ways to extend link range within the constraints typical of wireless sensornetworks and incorporate these aspects into the design of a wireless module. We report on the use of this module in a wireless sensor network designed for habitat monitoring. This application involves tracking the movement of RFID tagged bats between their nesting boxes.

This paper introduces a new trust model and a reputation system for wireless sensornetworks based on a sensed continuous data. It establishes the continuous version of the beta reputation system introduced in [1] and applied to binary events and presents a new Gaussian Reputation System for sensornetworks (GRSSN). We introduce a theoretically sound Bayesian probabilistic approach for mixing second-hand information from neighbouring nodes with directly observed information.

To enable new context-aware applications and services in future communication systems, wireless sensornetworks (WSNs) are required to capture the context surrounding the service user and service related objects. This paper introduces a novel configurable architecture for a WSN system that is able to deliver context information from the sensors to the user in different application environments, and allows its efficient integration into third generation (3G) mobile communication systems in particular into the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS). The proposed architecture offers significant advantages compared to the ZigBee architecture.

The problem of sensor network localization has been addressed with several localization algorithms. These algorithms can be categorized into centralized schemes which require that computations be performed at base nodes and distributed schemes which divide the network into sub-networks that localize themselves. In this work, we theoretically compare the transmission capacities of a general centralized algorithm against a distributed localization scheme to investigate the practicality of the schemes. We propose a simple model of the transmission overhead required for transmitting localization information and investigate the effect of the number of node links.

We describe a novel concept for an intrusion sensor network. The concept features two components. The first is a simple tone-based inter-node signaling system for autonomous interactive cueing, exhibiting a swarming behavior. The second component is a means to detect an intruder by measuring the reduction in a microwave illumination signal by a receiver as that signal is blocked by the intruder. Preliminary calculations indicate the feasibility of the simple signaling system.
