The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Integrated Coral Observing Network (ICON), has been operational since 2000 and works closely with most US Government and many international environmental partners involved in coral reef research. The ICON program has pioneered the use of artificial intelligence techniques to assess near real-time data streams from environment sensor networks such as the SEAKEYS Network (Florida Keys), the Australia Institute of Marine Science Weather Network, NOAA's Coral Reef Ecosystem Division network in the Pacific, and its own Integrated Coral Observing Network (ICON) of stations in the Caribbean. Besides its innovative approach to coral monitoring station deployments, the ICON program recently pioneered techniques for the near real-time integration of satellite, in situ and radar data sources for purposes of ecological forecasting of such events as coral bleaching, coral spawning, upwelling and other marine behavioral or physical oceanographic events. The ICON program has also ushered in the use of Pulse-Amplitude-Modulating fluorometry to measure near real-time physiological recording of response to environmental stress during coral bleaching, thus providing even better ecological forecasting capabilities through artificial intelligence and data integrative techniques. Herewith, we describe these techniques, along with a report on new coral calcification instrumentation augmenting the ICON Network sensor array.

The management of real-time streaming data in large-scale collaborative applications presents major processing, communication and administrative challenges. To that end, an open-source RBNB DataTurbine provides an excellent basis for developing robust streaming data middleware. The current RBNB DataTurbine streaming data middleware system satisfies a core set of critical infrastructure requirements including reliable data transport, the promotion of sensors and sensor streams to first-class objects, a framework for the integration of heterogeneous instruments, and a comprehensive suite of services for data management, routing, synchronization, monitoring, and visualization. As a part of PRAGMA telescience group, in collaboration with the National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) Taiwan, researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) deployed RBNB DataTurbine-based system to acquire data from underwater cameras (in the ocean) at Kenting. More specifically, we describe a system that integrates sensors (underwater video cameras) with computing and storage Grids to create a complete fabric for conducting e-Science. The system is currently used for observation by marine research scientists at the Research Center for Biodiversity. Academia Sinica in Taiwan. The described system increased performance and availability of the captured videos and we are, so far, pleased with its results.

Wireless sensor networks are widely deployed for a wide range of applications for gathering information about the environment, monitoring huge building etc. However, the limited energy of the sensor nodes requires efficient gathering of information so that the network lifetime is increased. In literature it is proved that this efficiency can be achieved by clustering the sensor nodes in the network. Previously we proposed a single hop genetic based clustering protocol (GCA) for sensor networks. However, multi-hop routing techniques are known to be a practical approach to solving the problem of routing in sensor networks. In this paper, we present a new robust clustering based multi-hop routing protocol for wireless sensor networks. The proposed genetic clustering, algorithm (M-GCA) employs evolutionary techniques to form an efficient virtual backbone. This backbone is used to support routing messages to the base station. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-hop routing protocol outperforms GCA, a single-hop clustering protocol in several scenarios.

This paper presents the design principles, implementation, and evaluation of the RETOS operating system which is specifically developed for micro sensor nodes. RETOS has four distinct objectives, which are to provide (1) a multithreaded programming interface, (2) system resiliency, (3) kernel extensibility with dynamic reconfiguration, and (4) WSN-oriented network abstraction. RETOS is a multithreaded operating system, hence it provides the commonly used thread model of programming interface to developers. We have used various implementation techniques to optimize the performance and resource usage of multithreading. RETOS also provides software solutions to separate kernel from user applications, and supports their robust execution on MMU-less hardware. The RETOS kernel can be dynamically reconfigured, via loadable kernel framework, so a application-optimized and resource-efficient kernel is constructed. Finally, the networking architecture in RETOS is designed with a layering concept to provide WSN-specific network abstraction. RETOS currently supports Atmel ATmega128, TI MSP430, and Chipcon CC2430 family of microcontrollers. Several real-world WSN applications are developed for RETOS and the overall evaluation of the systems is described in the paper.

Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of sensors equipped with limited energy and processing capabilities. They are deployed in a field to measure physical variables or defect events. In critical surveillance applications, sensors are used to monitor a geographical area and usually a full, or high, area coverage is required as a Quality-of-Service (QoS) parameter. In dense networks, sensors detection ranges usually overlap. Therefore, only a covering subset of sensors can be turned on while other sensors are put in a very low-power Sleep state. In this paper, we address the problem of maximizing the sensor network lifetime under area coverage constraint. For that, we propose a mechanism that dynamically activates an optimal covering subset of sensors, based on residual energies. We first model this problem as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem that we resolve using CPLEX. Then, we propose a greedy heuristic to tackle the exponentially-increasing processing times of the exact solution. We show that the proposed heuristic provides for acceptable solutions while having a polynomial O(N-2) complexity, suitable for large-scale networks.

This paper presents a pedestrian classification system using 3D imaging information. The system consists of a Photonic Mixer Device sensor (PMD), infrared lightsources and image processing algorithms. We present an example of an active safety system to protect pedestrians, describe a pedestrian classification using 3D image image processing, and give suggestions for further optimization of the software. The focus of this work is the description of main features which are required in order to accomplish a reliable classification. The task of the classification algorithms is to classify sensor objects either into the category PEDESTRIANS or the category NON-PEDESTRIANS. After taking a closer look at image processing and measurement results we draw the conclusion that a multisensor approach is an inevitable requirement in order to fulfil the strict requirements of an exemplary active safety system given in this paper. Finally, the paper explains improvements of the classification on the basis of feature level fusion using 2D and 3D sensor systems.

Target classification, especially visual target classification, in complex situations is challenging for image recognition in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The distributed and online learning for target classification is significant for highly-constrained WSNs. This paper presents a collaborative target classification algorithm for image recognition in WSNs, taking advantages of the collaboration for the data mining between multi-sensor nodes. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps, target detection and feature extraction are based on single-sensor node processing, whereas target classification is implemented by collaboration between multi-sensor nodes using collaborative support vector machines (SVMs). For conquering the disadvantages of inevitable missing rate and false rate in target detection, the proposed collaborative SVM adopts a robust mechanism for adaptive sample selection, which improves the incremental learning of SVM by just fusing the information from a selected set of wireless sensor nodes, Furthermore, a progressive distributed framework for collaborative SVM is also introduced for enhancing the collaboration between multi-sensor nodes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed collaborative target classification algorithm for image recognition can accomplish target classification quickly and accurately with little congestion, energy consumption and execution time.

In this paper, we show an application of Wyner-Ziv video coding in a wireless video sensor network. A rate estimation technique that permits to determine the compression rate without the need of a feedback channel is proposed This technique allows the system to assign unequal transmission rates for different video sensors. It employs a cross-layer approach that takes into account the amount of motion in each of the captured video scenes and the transmission conditions of each sensor. Simulation results show an improvement in the average system performance obtained with the proposed rate allocation method compared to the traditional rate allocation technique where all sensors are assigned an equal bandwidth. This improvement will motivate further research on the implementation of Wyner-Ziv video coding in Wireless Video sensor networks.

The proliferation of sensor networks provides a promising solution for a variety of ubiquitous data services, but it challenges the data security and privacy because of its unfavorable deployment nature of being prone to physical attacks with circumscribed source available. Considering the data redundancy, energy constraint, and security requirement, this paper proposed a secure data aggregation scheme which supports end-to-end encryption using privacy homomorphism as well as hop-by-hop verification using ECC based MAC in cluster based sensor networks. The analytic comparing results show that our scheme has higher resistance against eavesdropping and fabricating attacks at a little additional computational cost with higher connectivity.

In this contribution, we propose an efficient collaborative online filter in a wireless sensor network under communication constraints. The observed system is assumed to evolve according to a non linear state-space model. The distributed intelligent sensors collaborate to estimate the marginal probability of the hidden continuous state, within a Bayesian framework. The communication protocol relies on the activation of only few nodes. The selection of the leader node, through time, and its spatially collaborating nodes is based on a trade-off between data relevance (measured by an information criteria), message approximation error and communication constraints.
