In developing High Energy laser (HEL) weapons, it is necessary to understand the absolute radiometry associated with propagating the beam to the target. This is important for setting filter attenuation levels for the tracker, laser beacons, and battle damage assessment sensors, along with more traditional calculations of laser fluence on the target. In this paper, we will present the theory and experimental validation for laser beams propagating over large distances through atmospheric turbulence. We conducted several experiments at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Starfire Optical Range (SOR) on Kirtland AFB during 1997 to prove that we can accurately predict the "uplink" irradiance, the target signature, and the power levels or signal received from laser propagation. Specifically, using the Lageos satellite, we were able to predict the absolute signal to within 20% of the measured values. Subsequent experiments verify that the models we developed continue to accurately predict the absolute radiometry associated with laser beam propagation. The results should be useful for laser sensing, modeling and simulation, and exploitation and target recognition.

simulation development for laser Weapon systems design and system trade analyses has progressed to new levels with the advent of object-oriented software development tools and PC processor capabilities. These tools allow rapid visualization of upcoming laser weapon system architectures and the ability to rapidly respond to what-if scenario questions from potential user commands. These simulations can solve very intensive problems in short time periods to investigate the parameter space of a newly emerging weapon system concept, or can address user mission performance for many different scenario engagements. Equally important to the rapid solution of complex numerical problems is the ability to rapidly visualize the results of the simulation, and to effectively interact with visualized output to glean new insights into the complex interactions of a scenario. Boeing has applied these ideas to develop a tool called the Satellite Visualization and Signature Tool (SVST). This Windows application is based upon a series of C++ coded modules that have evolved from several programs at Boeing-SVS. The SVST structure, extensibility, and some recent results of applying the simulation to weapon system concepts and designs will be discussed in this paper.

The generation and recording of electromagnetic waves by typical ground-penetrating radar (GPR) sounding systems is complex and the effects of the antennas on the recorded data are not well understood. To address this problem, we present a versatile and efficient GPR system simulation tool. This algorithm is based on a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) approximation of Maxwell's equations and allows us to model realistically the radiation characteristics of a wide variety of typical surface GPR antenna systems. The accuracy of the algorithm is benchmarked and validated with respect to extensive laboratory measurements for comparable antenna systems. Given the flexibility of this GPR modeling software, we anticipate that it will be useful not only for the design and interpretation of GPR surveys, but also for the design of novel GPR sounding systems.

We describe the purpose, theory, implementation, and sample results of a wave optics propagation simulation developed to study multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAQ) for 4-10 m class telescopes. This code was more specifically developed to assess the impact of diffraction effects and a variety of implementation error sources upon the performance of the Gemini-South MCAO system. These errors include: Hartmann sensing with extended and elongated laser guide stars, optical propagation effects through the optics and atmosphere, laser guide star (LGS) projection through the atmosphere, deformable mirror (DM) and wave front sensor (WFS) misregistration, and calibration for non-common path errors. The code may be run in either a wave optics or geometric propagation mode to allow the code to be anchored against linear analytical models and to explicitly evaluate the impact of diffraction effects. The code is written in MATLAB, and complete simulations of the Gemini-South MCAO design (including 3 deformable mirrors with 769 actuators, 5 LGS WFS with 1020 subapertures, 3 tip/tilt natural guide star (NGS) WFS, and 50 meter phase screens with 1/32nd meter resolution) are possible using a Pentium iii but require 1 to 6 days. Sample results are presented for Gemini-South MCAO as well as simpler AO systems. Several possibilities for parallelizing the code for faster execution and the modeling of extremely large telescopes (ELT's) are discussed.

This paper compares measured to modeled stress-induced curvature of simple piston micromirrors. Two similar flexure-beam micromirror designs were fabricated using the 11th DARPA-supported Multi-User MEMS Processes (MUMPs) run. The test devices vary only in the MUMPs layers used for fabrication. In one case the mirror plate (upper electrode) is the 1.5 mu m thick Poly2 layer. The other mirror design employs stacked Poly1 and Poly2 layers for a total thickness of 3.5 mu m. Both mirror structures are covered with the standard MUMPs metallization of similar to 200 Angstrom of chromium and 0.5 mu m of gold. Curvature of these devices was measured to within +/- 5 nm with a computer controlled microscope laser interferometer system. As intended, the increased thickness of the stacked polysilicon layers reduces the mirror curvature by a factor of 4. The two micromirror designs were modeled using IntelliCAD, a commercial CAD system for MEMS. The basis of analysis was the finite element method. Simulated results using MUMPs II film parameters showed qualitative agreement with measured data, but obvious quantitative differences. Subsequent remeasurement of the metal stress and use of the new value significantly improved model agreement with the measured data. The paper explores the effect of several film parameters on the modeled structures. Implications for MEMS film metrology, and test structures are considered.

This paper presents a new local refining meshing algorithm which is referred to as the Exposed Face Mesh (EFM) algorithm, for three-dimensional coupled electromechanical analysis with multiple dielectrics. This algorithm allows for the independent refinement of the electrostatic mesh and mechanical mesh in a coupled system. This approach is compared to the commonly used volume refining mesh method in which both the electrostatic and mechanical mesh domains are refined concurrently. The new EFM method is shown to have substantial improvement in increasing accuracy of results and reducing computational expense (time and memory) especially for fringe electric field dominated structures. For a typical comb drive structure, the EFM algorithm generates much fewer volume mesh nodes for mechanical analysis (20 times less) and fewer surface mesh panels for electrostatic analysis (10 times less) than the standard volume refining mesh method. At the same time, the EFM method showed an improvement in accuracy from 15% (using the standard mesh) to within 5% for this case. The IntelliCAD(TM) MEMS modeling software has incorporated this Exposed Face Mesh algorithm and made it a unique software system to handle general device structures accurately.

There is proposed a simple design of an unstable laser resonator with a continuous rectangular aperture of an output beam. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the discharge laser cavity and it was used to study numerically the performance of a fast-flow technological C02 laser with such type of resonator which, as it has been shown, possesses good perspectives.

We present the results of a simulation program able to describe the dynamics of a Nd:MgO₂:LiNbO₃ P.E. waveguide laser. A special feature of this simulator is the ability to take into account the spatial hole burning effect on the population inversion in the transverse directions and the time modulation of the pump absorption due to the population inversion dynamics. Modal pump and signal waveguide fields and population inversion are expanded using Gauss-Hermite functions in the lateral direction and generalized Laguerre functions in depth. Only one function is used to represent the pump and the lasing fields and a maximum of eight functions in lateral and eight in depth direction to represent the population inversion. The need of this accurate modeling is shown by comparison with the results of a simplified model.

CO overtone laser pulses with energy up to 4.4 J and efficiency up to 1% with completely suppressed lasing in the fundamental band were obtained from mixtures of CO:N₂ excited by an e-beam sustained discharge with a duration of 1.5 microsecond(s) . A comprehensive model of this laser was formulated. The results of numerical simulations satisfactorily correlate with experiments. The conditions for obtaining efficiency as high as 20% are predicted.
