The growing complexity of modern automated production systems demands solutions for managing alarm floods potentially stemming from multi-root causes, while improving situational awareness of operators to ensure timely fault responses and minimize downtime. For this purpose, knowledge-driven approaches that utilize domain specific knowledge for alarm handling have shown promising results. However, knowledge extraction is expensive, leaving data-driven approaches as an alternative, which in turn requires large amounts of data. To profit from both approaches and alleviate their weaknesses, hybrid approaches have been a focus of recent development. Therefore, this work proposes the Alarm-logic-Directed-Graph for a novel hybrid approach. This graph models the alarm logic inherent in the control code, enabling knowledge-based clustering and sorting of the alarm log, which then serves as input data for a subsequent Bayesian network learning. Moreover, with the integration of physical and heuristic knowledge, the root causes can be further refined to alarm-related component status variables. The evaluation of this work is conducted on the Tennessee-Eastman Process, a well-known continuous process simulation. The results show that the proposed approach remains robust to multi-root cause identification even in the absence of historical alarm log data or process knowledge besides programmable logic controller code.

The secondary system plays important roles in a smart substation in order to ensure its intelligence performance and operational safety. The design of the secondary system results in SCD, SDD, and GIM files for its logic, physical and 3D models, respectively. But it is often challenging for engineers to map GOOSE signals onto 3D components of fiber ports. In this regard, a signal mapping method has been developed for associating 3D port with both the input and output GOOSE signals which are represented by the virtual pins. Finally, a case of a cubicle has been studied for validating the feasible application of the developed mapping method. This mapping information can assist maintenance engineers in decision-making for fault diagnosis and maintenance operations.

Photovoltaic (PV) systems operate outdoors and are inevitably exposed to various environmental stresses. These stresses may result in several faults and failures which can affect the PV proper performance in terms of reducing the output power and even in some catastrophic cases may end in fire hazards. Therefore, PV systems need to be constantly and carefully monitored to maintain their appropriate performance. In this paper, a condition monitoring (CM) scheme is proposed based on the programmable logic Controller (PLC). The scheme is capable to detect line-to-line (LL) and line-to-ground (LG) faults on the DC-side of the PV array and also enables the system to track the maximum power point (MPP) and provides the operator with the real-time PV information via Human-Machine Interface (HMI).

Wastewater treatment facilities are necessary to safeguard the environment and lessen the harmful effects of contaminated water. To create pure water fit for human consumption, these treatments go through several exacting procedures in both their chemical and electrical stages. To obtain necessary advantages, such as using them to produce electrical energy and other advantages, chemical compounds and fertilizers can also be extracted. In addition to programmable logic controllers with high accuracy, resilience, and quick reaction times for decision-making, processors and monitoring systems are needed to prevent any malfunction that could interrupt the treatment and jeopardize human consumption. Through a communication system that depends on quickly obtaining and reacting to data, this study will make use of programmable logic controllers (PLC), which depend on dependable communication networks and quick transmission and reception speeds. Furthermore, transmitting and receiving signals guarantees exact error detection protection and correct synchronization in the event that any communication system component fails. A highly reliable and accurate communication network based on communication protocols is achieved when the PLC sends its data over long distances and, depending on the cables used, whether optical fiber or others, to the main center of the SCADA system to process the data according to the proposed scenario. This is because the system operates in real-time, which explains why it achieves acquisition and processing in a short amount of time, approximately 10 milliseconds, or the total time to acquire and process all system parameters reaches 140 milliseconds.

A 4×4 approximate multiplier based on LUTs is presented and implemented for digital signal processing applications, with the goal of streamlining energy consumption and improving performance. The proposed multiplier employs Look-Up Tables (LUTs) and carry chain techniques to balance accuracy and hardware efficiency. The design process involves dividing partial products into two LUT-implemented parts, followed by a final combination stage. Simulation results shows that significant improvements over conventional multipliers, with power savings of up to 70% and latency improvements of up to 40%. The proposed design achieves logic power consumption as low as 59 mW while maintaining acceptable accuracy for error-tolerant applications. Consequently, these results validate the proposed multiplier's effectiveness in reducing area usage, lowering power consumption, and increasing speed.

This paper introduces a new FPGA-based scheme to implement a reconfigurable LFM signal synthesizer for software-defined radar applications. This new approach is based on the DDCS algorithm. The proposed implementation architecture is designed to avoid additional comparison operations of the instantaneous frequency to the upper limit frequency in the modulation process compared to the existing DDCS architecture. Consequently, it results in lower logic utilization and higher flexibility. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated through simulation, implementation, and real-time hardware verification. This reveals our implementation approach's efficiency, flexibility, and adaptability compared to traditional methods.

The development of industrial automation technology is increasingly sophisticated, directly proportional to the increasing production needs. The use of 3 phase induction motor technology as the main driving component of industrial machines is increasing. High reliability, minimum maintenance, and low price, the 3-phase induction motor is the most appropriate choice for use in industry. The 3-phase induction motor has drawbacks, one of which is not being able to maintain speed when there is a change in load. A closed circuit system using a programmable logic controller (PLC) and Variable speed drive (VSD) is a solution to maintain a stable motor speed. However, it still has the responsibility to reach the reference speed long enough. Some industrial machine productions require a stable 3-phase induction motor rotation speed. In this study, we provide a solution by using PID Autotuning control to accelerate the responsiveness and maintain the motor speed to the reference speed position when there is a change in loading. The test results using the PID Control method, the speed response, when there is a change in loading, is 2 seconds faster than without using PID control. With a speed error of 44.53 rpm or 2.9% of the 1500 rpm reference speed. Smaller than without PID with an error of 118.56 rpm or 7.9% of the 1500 rpm reference speed. © 2021 IEEE.

As demand for effective systems increases, the optimization of hardware for operations such as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is necessary, especially in environments where resources are limited. The specific method to overcome the obstacles is the use of IEEE 754 Floating Point Presentation to reduce the computation time of the mathematical operations in the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). In this project we are going to apply the pipelined structure through which we can proceed the mathematical operations simultaneously through which we can attain a faster method of processing. The simulation of the Verilog code is done using ModelSim 6.4c tool where we obtain a hexadecimal output in the standard time of 100ms through which we get a optimized design of the Fast Fourier Transform and the physical mode of the output can be obtained by implementing in the Field programmable Gate array (FPGA).

Demand Side Management (DSM), which regulates consumer energy usage to lower peak demand and boost system reliability, is a crucial component of contemporary power systems. This study suggests a novel method for programming. The proposed control device for DSM implementation employs programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The proposed system includes a central control unit that communicates with multiple smart meters installed in households and commercial buildings via PLCs. The control unit collects real-time data on energy consumption and uses it to manage the demand in a coordinated and efficient manner. The design and implementation of the proposed DSM system using PLCs. Also, this study discusses about the hardware and software components used in the proposed system, including the PLCs, communication protocol, and user interface. Further, this study describes the control algorithms that are used to manage the demand and its implementation using ladder logic programming. Finally, this study shows the findings from simulations and experimental tests performed to assess the efficiency and dependability of the suggested DSM system. Customers can also monitor their energy use with the system’s user interface, and they can change their usage habits in reaction to demand signals. The proposed system provides accurate and timely control of energy consumption and allows consumers to adjust their energy usage in response to changing demand signals. The system is also easy to implement and can be easily scaled to meet the needs of large power distribution networks. The suggested DSM, in general PLCs have the potential to increase the effectiveness and dependability of any system while benefiting both utilities and consumers.
