To evaluate differences across viewers' visual attentional patterns, scanpath comparison has recently gained popularity in eye tracking studies, supplementing traditional objective (performance) and subjective measures (e.g., heat maps or [retrospective] talk-aloud). We introduce iComp, an open-source visualization tool that implements quantitative scanpath comparison in loci and sequence. iComp can be used to objectively compare the attentional qualities of synthetic images. This work investigates how people perceive high-fidelity computer graphics whilst they are experiencing motion. The aim is to exploit the cross-modal interference between the human visual and vestibular systems. This will enable only the perceptually important parts of the imagery to be rendered at the highest quality, while the remainder of the scene can be rendered at a significantly lower quality for substantially less computational cost. The viewer will never be aware of this quality difference. Copyright © 2006 by the Association for Computing Machinery, Inc.

Chemistry deals with structures too small for the naked eye;thus chemists rely heavily on graphical representations. An external observer could presume that the available chemistry visualization tools would be at the forefront regarding representation techniques and interaction methods. Our survey of 20 widely available non-commercial molecular visualization tools shows instead a high uniformity of representation methods and a general imbalance toward visualization for presentation only. To study alternatives to the current situation, we created "viz laboratories": small, focused applications that highlight a specific chemistry visualization technique to collect practitioners feedback and to encourage them to think about new visualization paradigms. One of the most challenging problems in data visualization is the perception of 3D flow fields because judging the orientation of 3D paths is perceptually difficult. It is hypothesized that perception of the orientations of streamlines in space can greatly benefit from stereoscopic depth cues and motion parallax. In addition, because stereoscopic depth perception is a super-acuity and relies on such factors as small-scale stereoscopic disparity gradient based on texture, stereoscopic depth judgments will be exceptionally sensitive to display quality. In conventional displays, the aliasing of pixels gives completely spurious texture information to the mechanisms of stereoscopic depth perception. We carried out a study to evaluate the importance of 3D cues in perceiving the orientation of curved contours. The result showed that stereo and motion cues are essential to perceiving the orientation of 3D lines. If, however, the contours are rendered as shaded tubes, good orientation information is available even without stereo or motion depth cues. Measures of dissimilarity of 3D models are necessary in a wide range of applications such as geometry compression, simplification, and 3D model retrieval. In many cases a metric that models perceptual dissimilarity is desirable. Recently, metrics for 3D models have been evaluated in that respect using concepts such as just noticeable differences, rankings, and others. We propose a simple experimental setup for evaluating supra-threshold perception of 3D models in which users select models at equal perceptual distance to given pairs of models. We discuss the advantages of our approach and report the results of a field study comparing six objective distance measures applied to palettes of simplified reference models. We found that the objective measures are biased, and generally image-based metrics perform better than metrics based on the original 3D geometry.
