Several upgrades of the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) system of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment are currently being implemented to ensure a highly performing muon system during the upcoming High Luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider which will have an increased integrated luminosity of 3000 fb-1. The expected experimental conditions in that period present a challenge for the entire CMS detection system. To extend the RPC coverage, an improved version of the already existing RPCs will be installed in the forward region of the 3rd and 4th endcap disks. The current overall status of this CMS RPC upgrade project is presented. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

To understand the application of satellite positioning and navigation system, the application of a particle filter algorithm in satellite positioning and navigation system is studied. In this paper, firstly, the state equation of the system is established according to the correlation between the parameters of GPS output, and the particle filter algorithm is applied to filter the GPS-received data. In the CPS navigation system, DSP is used to decode and filter the output signal of the CPS receiver. The results show that when the GPS signal is disturbed, the particle filter algorithm can deal with the abnormal observation samples well, which shows that it can reduce the computational complexity and improve the GPS positioning accuracy, and have a certain robustness. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A large R&D program has been underway to develop silicon sensors with sufficient radiation tolerance for LHC-Phase-II trackers and the next generation of collision experiments. Key areas of recent rd50 research include new technologies such as CMOS and Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs), where a dedicated multiplication layer to create a high field region is built into the sensor. We also seek for a deeper understanding of the connection between macroscopic sensor properties such as radiation-induced increase of leakage current, effective doping concentration and trapping, and the microscopic properties at the defect level. Another strong activity is the development of advanced sensor types, like 3D silicon detectors. We will present the state of the art in silicon detectors at radiation levels corresponding to LHC-Phase-II fluences and beyond. Based on our results, we will give an outlook towards the silicon detectors to be used for particle detectors at future colliders like the FCC. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The rd53 collaboration has been working since 2014 on the development of pixel chips for the CMS and ATLAS Phase 2 tracker upgrade. This work has recently led to the development of the rd53B full-scale readout chip which is using the 65nm CMOS process and containing 153600 pixels of 50 × 50 μm 2 The rd53B chip is designed to be robust against the Single Event Effects (SEE), allowing such a complex chip to operate reliably in the hostile environment of the HL-LHC. Different SEE mitigation techniques based on the Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) have been adopted for the critical information in the chip. Furthermore, the efficiency of this mitigation scheme has been evaluated for the rd53B chip with heavy ion beams in the CYCLONE facility and with a 480 MeV proton beam in TRIUMF facility. The purpose of this paper is to describe and explain all the SEE mitigation strategies used in the rd53B chip, to report and analyze the heavy ions and proton tests results and to estimate the expected Single Event Upset (SEU) rates at the HL-LHC. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The dynamics of electrons and ions in gaseous ionization detectors have been studied reasonably well with particle simulation models developed using the Garfield++ numerical simulation framework. This is an important area of study since it allows prediction of the detector response in a given experimental situation. In this work, a fluid simulation model has been developed in the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation framework to simulate the avalanche and streamer formation in GEM-based detectors. Possible detector geometries in 2D, 2D axisymmetric and 3D coordinate systems have been explored to find the optimum numerical configuration. Transport of charged fluids has been simulated in the optimized model for various operating voltage ranges suitable for single, double and triple GEM detectors using Ar-CO2 (70-30) as the gas mixture. Simulated gain variations have been compared with experimental observations. Effect of space charge and its relation to streamer formation have been studied. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Assembly clearance has a great influence on the performance of precision parts. Improper assembly clearance affects the working state and induces failure of parts. A method to analyze the assembly clearance of the precision spherical coupling parts by analyzing the points cloud was proposed. The least square center was used to find a rough center. Accurate center was searched near the least square center by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm based on the minimum zone method. Radical clearance and Z clearance of precision spherical coupling parts were calculated. Furthermore, the dynamic change of assembly clearance was also calculated by rotating the parts. The sphericity error evaluation results were improved obviously compared with other results. The accuracy of the evaluation results improved 4.51% 1/428.97%. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The Inner Detector of the ATLAS experiment at CERN will be replaced by a completely new Inner Tracker (ITk) to exploit the performance of the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC accelerator (HL-LHC). The new detector will have to operate in an unprecedented radiation environment. In particular, the hybrid pixel detectors of the innermost layer of the ITk will be exposed to a particle fluence of about 1.7 × 1016 neq/cm2 before being replaced. A novel 3D pixel sensor technology featuring thin active substrates and small pixel cells has been selected to instrument the innermost barrel layer and rings of the ATLAS ITk. Prototypes of 3D pixel sensors produced at CNM in Barcelona, Spain, including 3D pixelated test structures as well as half-size sensors coupled to the rd53A ASIC prototype for HL-LHC, have been irradiated with protons and neutrons up to the radiation doses expected for the innermost layers of ITk. Their performance in terms of leakage current, power dissipation and hit efficiency of different pixel geometries after irradiation have been investigated and compared to the requirements for ITk. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Angular correlations serve as a very important tool to study the complex dynamics of particle collisions at colliders, which is not very well understood. Angular correlation is generally quantified in terms of the ∆η and ∆Ø. In the current paper, Monte Carlo events using simulator Pythia are generated and studied in terms of the variables sensitive towards the angular correlations. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Using the prediction method of surface element method and particle swarm optimization algorithm to study the multi-parameter optimization design of ducted propeller. Hicks-Henne function and Bezier function are used to fit the parameter curve of the ducted propeller. Taking the open water efficiency of the ducted propeller as the optimization target, the numerical simulation was performed. By analyzing the result, the multi-parameter coupling optimization design of the ducted propeller can be achieved. After optimization, the open water efficiency and thrust coefficient at the design points have been improved. Among the two fitting methods, the Bezier function gives a better result, which is consistent with the actual engineering. Within the range of the common speed coefficient of each ducted propeller, the efficiency and thrust are improved and meet the requirements. The feasibility and effectiveness of the multi-parameter coupling design of the ducted propeller are verified. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

particle accelerators have a singular environment where multiple constraints are driving the engineering of equipment. Designers have to deal with the destructive effects of charged particles, high vacuum requirements, large temperatures and particular system architectures due to large-scale installations such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the CERN laboratory. At the same time, there is a continuous challenge to produce, measure and control smaller particle beams to increase the discovery potentials of large physics experiments. In this context, an innovative actuator has been built to measure precisely the size of beams down to 150 mu m sigma, by moving a thin carbon wire of 30 mu m at about 20m.s(-1) through particle beams. Called Beam Wire Scanner (BWS), this system uses direct drive coupling to actuate a shaft inside a vacuum vessel without moving parts outside it. We are reporting on the design and validation of its control system based on torque control feedback as the only on-line closed-loop system to operate this instrument. The proposed strategy keeps the smoothest action as possible on the system avoiding speed and position corrections that would lead to undesired torque variations, increasing the uncertainty of the carbon wire position.
