In this paper we study the impact of polynomial or broadband subspace decompositions on any subsequent processing, which here uses the example of a broadband angle of arrival estimation technique using a recently proposed polynomial MUSIC (P-MUSIC) algorithm. the subspace decompositions are performed by iterative polynomial EVDs, which differ in their approximations to diagonalise and spectrally majorise s apce-time covariance matrix. We here show that a better diagonalisation has a significant impact on the accuracy of defining broadband signal and noise subspaces, demonstrated by a much higher accuracy of the P-MUSIC spectrum.

In this paper, we investigate precoding techniques for physical-layer security in multi-user MIMO systems under various conditions of channel state information (CSI). A Lattice Reduction (LR) aided non-linear precoding technique based on Successive Optimization Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (SO-thP) and Simplified Generalized Matrix Inversion (S-GMI) technique is proposed along with a strategy for injecting artificial noise prior to transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed LR-SO-thP+S-GMI precoding technique outperforms existing non-linear and linear precoding algorithms in terms of BER and secrecy rate performances.

A preliminary investigation has been conducted into the use of orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access for distributed estimation. the key difference from previous work in the literature is that the channels between the sensors and the fusion center contain multiple paths with time lags, amplitudes, and phase rotations due to fading. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing has been proven to be an effective modulation scheme in the presence of multipath channels, and thus has been utilized in these experiments. this estimation system was designed to operate in a heavily scattered environment where synchronizing the transmitters and developing channel statistics has proven difficult to achieve. sensors measure a signal in noise, modulate the measured data over an OFDM subcarrier, and transmit this to a fusion center over a Gaussian multiple-access channel. the transmissions are received at the fusion center using an OFDM receiver, and the estimation process is completed. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique.

Fast back-projection algorithms provide substantial speedup when compared with the standard back-projection algorithm. However in many potential near-field applications of synthetic aperture radar, further speedup is still required in order to make the application operationally feasible. In this paper we investigate the application of multi-core central processing units and graphic processing units, which are now standard on most scientific workstations, to further speed up a very recently proposed fast back-projection algorithm (the fast decimation-inimage back-projection algorithm).

this paper considers the problem of low-dimensional visualisation of very high dimensional information sources for the purpose of situation awareness in the maritime environment. In response to the requirement for human decision support aids to reduce information overload (and specifically, data amenable to inter-point relative similarity measures) appropriate to the below-water maritime domain, we are investigating a preliminary prototype topographic visualisation model. the focus of the current paper is on the mathematical problem of exploiting a relative dissimilarity representation of signals in a visual informatics mapping model, driven by real-world sonar systems. A realistic noise model is explored and incorporated into non-linear and topographic visualisation algorithms building on the approach of [9]. Concepts are illustrated using a real world dataset of 32 hydrophones monitoring a shallow-water environment in which targets are present and dynamic.

Methods for sensor control are crucial for modern surveillance and sensing systems to enable efficient allocation and prioritisation of resources. the framework of partially observed Markov decision processes enables decisions to be made based on data received by the sensors within an information-theoretic context. this work addresses the problem of closed-loop sensor management in a multi-target surveillance context where each target is assumed to move independently of other targets. Analytic expressions of the information gain are obtained, for a class of exact multi-target tracking filters are obtained and based on the Renyi divergence. the proposed method is sufficiently general to address a broad range of sensor management problems through the application-specific reward function defined by the operator.

In this work, we consider a network of bearing only sensors in a surveillance scenario. the processing of target measurements follow a two-tier architecture: the first tier is composed of centralised processing clusters whereas in the second tier, cluster heads perform decentralised processing. We are interested in the first tier problem of locating peripheral sensors relative to their cluster head. We mainly exploit target measurements received by the cluster head in a parameter estimation setting which involves Sequential Monte Carlo methods, and is known to have many difficulties in practice, including particle deficiency, sensitivity to initialisation, and high computational complexity. these difficulties are exacerbated by the bearing-only modality which provides a relatively poor target observability. We propose an online solution through Bayesian recursions on Junction Tree models of the posterior which partition the problem into fixed size subproblems and hence provides scalability with the number of sensors. We use the received signal strength as noisy range measurements to improve the robustness and accuracy of our algorithm. We demonstrate its efficacy with an example. © 2014 IEEE.

Boundary estimation from an acoustic room impulse response (RIR), exploiting known sound propagation behavior, yields useful information for various applications: e.g., source separation, simultaneous localization and mapping, and spatial audio. the baseline method, an algorithm proposed by Antonacci et al., uses reflection times of arrival (TOAs) to hypothesize reflector ellipses. Here, we modify the algorithm for 3-D environments and for enhanced noise robustness: DYPSA and MUSIC for epoch detection and direction of arrival (DOA) respectively are combined for source localization, and numerical search is adopted for reflector estimation. Both methods, and other variants, are tested on measured RIR data the proposed method performs best, reducing the estimation error by 30%.

We investigate a subaperturing technique for twodimensional (2D) transmit arrays within the context of multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Specifically, we investigate the performance of transmit beamforming using fully overlapped subarrays of a 2D transmit array. As reported for linear array of antennas, this 2D transmit array exploits the advantages of the MIMO radar technology without sacrificing the coherent processing gain at the transmit side provided by the phasedarray concept. In order to achieve high coherent processing gain, a weight vector should be designed for each subarray to steer the transmit beam in certain 2D sector in space. this is achieved by solving a convex optimization problem that minimizes the difference between a desired transmit beampattern and the actual beampattern produced by the 2D array of antennas, under a constraint in terms of uniform power allocation across the transmit antennas.
