Software modeling and digital twins are transforming the way software engineers design, operate, and maintain complex systems. In this column, we highlight cutting-edge research presented at the ACM/IEEE 27th International conference on Model-Driven Engineering Languages and Systems (MODELS 2024) and the 1st International conference on Engineering Digital Twins (EDTconf 2024). the selected papers tackle critical challenges in improving system understanding, enhancing stakeholder communication, streamlining design and development processes, optimizing lifecycles, and enabling seamless integration of complex systems.

the main objective of the following study is to analyze the potential offered by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with another methodology known in the literature and in the industrial field. TRIZ (theory of Inventive Problem Solving) is here enhanced with some language-based AI (such as ChatGPT or Bard) to speed up the process of generating ideas. In this case, integration with AI finds greater potential when it is applied during the definition of the concept or product architecture. Finally, the case study of a drone developed for the collection of plastics is used as a practical example to show the pros and cons related to the integration of AI with TRIZ.

the lower part of the cargo floor support is the key part of the aircraft that absorbs energy after contacting with the ground firstly in the process of crash, which is an important index of the crashworthiness of the aircraft. In this paper, based on the transient dynamics explicit integration algorithm and finite element analysis method, finite element analysis is carried out to analyse the nonlinear process of the structural deformation of the support member in the crash. the results show that the peak acceleration at the centre of the floor can be reduced by reducing the thickness of the strut to improve its crashworthiness. the width of the edge strip of the brace and the angle of the outer support of the brace have little effect on the deformation of the bottom of the fuselage and the peak acceleration at the centre of the floor. © the Author(s) 2025.

PDF -to-audio based summarization technology is designed to enhance information accessibility and efficiency by transforming long written reports into short, audible summaries. AI, NLP, and TTS technologies that have developed recently have made it possible to extract main points without losing context. Yet, current systems have various shortcomings such as inability to process intricate PDF layouts like tables, charts, and annotations, contextual summarization inaccuracies, robotic or unhuman speech synthesis, and limited customization. Furthermore, the absence of multilingual support and easy integration into various platforms hinders wider adoption. these issues are addressed in this paper with a better approach that employs sophisticated NLP methods, context-sensitive summarization algorithms, and adaptive TTS systems. Our goal is to create a strong, user-oriented solution that provides greater summarization accuracy, personalized speech output, and improved accessibility for a variety of users, such as professionals, students, and the disabled. © 2025 IEEE.

Requirements elicitation is a crucial phase in Requirements Engineering, laying the foundation for the system design process. Gathering requirements entails employing structured methods to understand the specific requests of the stakeholders involved. Given the intricate multi-domain nature of mechatronic systems and the increasing customer expectations, establishing robust foundations during the requirements elicitation phase becomes imperative. Two widely adopted methods for requirements elicitation, namely the House of Quality (HoQ) and Black Box Analysis (BBA), are separately applied to a case study involving an automatic parking gate. the system is then designed using the RFLP (Requirements - Functional - Logical - Physical) approach for mechatronic systems design. An integrated proposal combining both methods is then presented and applied to the same case study. the aim is to address each method's limitations and improve the requirements elicitation process to generate a comprehensive list of requirements that considers customer needs and essential system functionalities. the subsequent re-application of the RFLP process highlighted the enhancements facilitated by the integrated application of both methods.

the safety of aircraft cabin materials is related to the safety of passengers and aircraft. With the development of science and technology, the types of materials are becoming more and more abundant, with frequent applications in the aircraft cabin, cargo compartment, and other locations. A large number of these materials improve the economic comfort of the aircraft. When a fire occurs, the performance of the materials involved can significantly influence the fire's progression, which in turn affects the safety of passengers and the aircraft. Additionally, it can impact emergency evacuation procedures. To enhance safety in aircraft research, development, and manufacturing, it is essential to understand the flame-retardant properties of materials used in aircraft. Scientific methods must be employed to verify the fireproofing capabilities of these materials, and data-driven evaluations should assess their flame-retardant properties. this is crucial to ensure the safety of passengers and the aircraft itself. In the event of a fire, effective materials can slow the spread of flames, allowing passengers to evacuate promptly and increasing their chances of survival. By analyzing the cabin material fire test verification method and airworthiness requirements, the aircraft cabin material fire requirements are outlined to provide guidelines for the commercial aircraft cabin material fire verification work, to guide the aircraft design process of cabin material selection, and to accelerate the pace of airworthiness certification. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In the context of designing of customized products, ensuring the verification of requirements and stakeholder needs in an efficient and cost-effective manner poses significant challenges. this paper proposes a Virtual Prototyping approach, integrating Computer-Aided design and multibody modelling, to leverage their respective advantages. the presented case study involves the integration of two pre-existing robots, a cobot and an Autonomous Mobile Robot, to realize an Autonomous Mobile Cobot tailored to the specific needs of a manufacturing industry. through Virtual Prototyping approach, part of the requirements, including spatial and assembly constraint, are verified by means of CAD, while interaction and behavioural requirements are verified through multibody modelling and simulation. this work highlights the efficacy of Virtual Prototyping in achieving comprehensive design verification for tailored products. By simulating the behaviour and performance of the designed system before physical implementation, Virtual Prototyping reduces the time and costs associated with traditional trial-and-error methods. Moreover, it enables a more thorough exploration of design alternatives and optimization strategies, ultimately improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. this integrated approach showcases the potential of digital tools to enhance the development of complex industrial systems, paving the way for tailored solutions to meet evolving market demands.

Nowadays, modern vehicles comprise a vast number of components made from various materials and manufactured using different techniques, making the management of assemblability, functionality, and cost highly complex. this complexity necessitates controlling geometrical and dimensional deviations to meet product and process demands. Dimensional Management (DM), supported by standards such as ASME-GD&T and ISO-GPS, is increasingly employed for geometrical specification and tolerance analysis. through Computer-Aided Tolerancing (CAT) tools, tolerances can be considered early in the design process using design for Tolerancing (DfT) approaches. this study aims to develop and define a methodology for geometric specification allocation and tolerance stack-up analysis of automotive components. the methodology integrates predictive models, DM, and DfT approaches via computer-aided tolerance specification and analysis, enabling comprehensive modeling and simulation of tolerance effects on performance, quality, and assemblability. By applying this methodology to a vehicle engine assembly, its feasibility and effectiveness are demonstrated, showing how the integration of CAT tools and theoretical approaches can significantly enhance design accuracy and efficiency.
