image compression is one of the major services in space flight mission and remote sensing system. this paper presents a high speed and high performance image compressor for future spacecrafts and micro-satellites. the proposed compression core is based on a modified CCSDS algorithm and the processing speed is improved 40 times using parallel architecture and pipeline technique. the experimental results indicate that this core has high performance at coding efficiency, data rate and error containment. A data rate of about 12.5 Mpixels/s can be sustained at 50 MHz.

Joint Video compression and encryption (JVCE) has gained increased attention in the past couple of years to reduce the computational complexity of video compression, as well as provide encryption of multimedia content for web services. In this paper, we present a JVCE framework based on Binary Arithmetic coding (BAC). We first present an interpretation of BAC in terms of a skewed binary map and then describe 7 other possible chaotic maps which give similar Shannon optimal performance as BAC. We then propose a modification of BAC in which the overall length within the range (0, 1) allocated to each symbol is preserved, but the choice of map used to encode each symbol is based on a key. the encoder, referred to as Chaotic Binary Arithmetic Coder (CBAC), has the effect of scrambling the intervals without making any changes to the width of interval in which the codeword must lie, thereby allowing encryption without sacrificing any coding efficiency. We also present some some security enhancement features to show how they can alleviate the limitations of our technique against known cryptanalysis on BAC-based encryption schemes.

For chart analysis, it is necessary to segment regions of interest from the background for a better understanding of distinctive pieces of charts. Many different methods, such as thresholding, clustering, compression-based methods, etc., are proposed for image segmentation. For accurate representation, decoding of graphical data or visual contents is needed for a readable and understandable data pattern for a computing machine. the existing works for classification of charts have relied on local and handcrafted features that lack in dealing with a massive amount of visual data. that could include substantial variabilities of complex data from within-class and between-classes of data. therefore, we propose a segmentation method using histogram to segment the charts into a region of interest for feature extraction and classification. H-means algorithm uses histogram to decide the number of clusters by extracting peaks as ROIs for each chart image and segments foreground from the background. An image database of info charts having 5280 images covering ten categories of chart images is introduced to the research community. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

An important issue in embedding watermark bits in compressed video stream is to keep the bit-rate unchanged after the watermarking. this is a very difficult problem for high efficient compression methods such as H.264/AVC, because just one bit alteration in highly compressed bit-stream may widely affect the video content. In this paper we solve this problem by embedding watermark bit to the sign bit of the Trailing Ones in Context Adaptive Variable Length coding (CAVLC) of H.264/AVC. the algorithm yields no bit-rate change after the data hiding. Also, we can easily balance between the capacity of the watermark bits and the fidelity of the video. the simplicity of the proposed algorithm is an added bonus for the real-time applications. Our experiments show that the PSNRs of the video sequences after the data hiding are higher than 43dB. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

In the coding of digital facsimile documents, a number of non-information-preserving codes have been proposed which make use of the repetition of binary patterns corresponding to printed or typewritten text characters. the success of such a scheme depends on the accuracy and speed of the template-matching algoritnm which decides whether one pattern may be substituted for another without loss of context or legibility. this paper proposes a template-matching algorithm whose accuracy compares favourably with that of other reported algorithms, and whose execution time is significantly faster in computer simulations. the proposed algorithm is particularly well suited to realisation in parallel hardware. © 1988, Springer-Verlag.

In the age of information and communication technology (ICT), the requirements of multimedia image transmission are essential. image compression (source coding) has provided significant improvements for communication bandwidth, and transmission cost and data rate. the objective of the paper is to develop new techniques for strengthening the compression of still images. the features of the proposed algorithm include: (i) a wavelet transform engine, which provides a better image compression rate and visual quality as compared to DCT-based systems (JPEG); (ii) zero-path which exploits the cross-scale self-similarity of wavelet coefficients and thus provides zero-path compression; (iii) the absence of side information (significant map) for coding and decoding of zero-tree structure hence reduces the data bits for significant map symbolic coding; (iv) adaptive arithmetic entropy coding provides further compression on generating variable-length codewords. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms both JPEG and the EZW (embedded zerotree wavelet) algorithms in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), data compression bit-rate (bpp), and also human visual perception.
