In the age of information and communication technology (ICT), the requirements of multimedia images transmission are essential. image compression (source coding) has been provided significant improvements of communication bandwidth, and transmission cost and data rate. the objective of this paper is to develop new techniques for strengthening the compression of still images. the features of the proposed algorithm include: (i) wavelet transform engine, which provide better image compression rate and visual quality as compare to DCT-based system (JPEG), (ii) Zero-path exploit the cross-scale self-similarity of wavelet coefficients thus provides Zero-path compression, (iii) withthe absent of side information (significant map) for coding and decoding of Zero-tree structure hence reduces data bit for significant map symbolic coding (iv) Adaptive Arithmetic Entropy coding provides further compression on generating variable-length code-words. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms both JPEG and the EZW algorithms in terms of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), data compression bit-rate (bpp), and as well the human vision perception.
In this paper, we propose a simple subband image compression scheme using wavelet decomposition. the proposed coding scheme employs a multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition, organizes and orders the resultant wavele...

A new image compression format is being developed to replace the gif and tif formats for Internet image transmission. Based on the Autosophy information theory, the new format is especially suited to the Internet. Features include much higher compression ratios, improved resistance to the Internet's Quality of Service (QoS) problems, a universal hardware-independent communication format, and optional "codebook" encryption for secure communications. the all 16 bit data format allows the mixing of other Internet data types (including live video, sound, text, and random bit files) within a universal communication protocol. Encoding speed is less than a second per image. Hardware chipsets are necessary for real-time encoding speed, but real-time retrieval can be achieved using software only. Conventional lossless image compression formats use the dynamically growing tree libraries of the LZW code. that yields minimal compression for small images and creates great sensitivity to transmission effors. the new image compression format, in contrast, uses a fixed -- pre-grown -- hyperspace pattern library. that provides much higher compression ratios, increased error resistance, and even optional encryption. the same algorithms can provide either "lossless" compression according to the Shannon theory or "visually lossless" compression according to the Autosophy theory.

Lossless Fractal imagecoding (LFIC) is a new method to code images. the significant property of this method is that it is the first simple fractal imagecoding method that can regenerate images without data loss (lossless). the method, different from the other fractal image compression [1][2], needs no search for matched domain-range. therefore, the coding time of this method is also very fast compared withthe other fractal image compression methods.

Entropy coding algorithms assign variable length codes to the input data (symbols) based on their statistical properties. those techniques are used in both lossless and lossy compression systems. this article presents scaling and residual mapping parameters in coding scheme and their effect on compression of images. In our experiments these entropy coding techniques have been incorporated in simple DPCM based lossless compressor.

In digital video coding, the 2-D block-based Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been widely used, combined withthe quantization techniques of DCT coefficients, for the purpose of compression of video data. Video compression algorithms using this block-based transform coding method cause the blocking and ringing artifacts in the reconstructed images of a video sequence. In this paper, we propose the efficient post-processing algorithm for coded video sequence, where the ringing effects near sharp edges are smoothed out and the blocking effects are removed without blurring the edge regions at the decoder the simulation examples of processing images coded by MPEG-2 are presented to demonstrate that a significant improvement has been achieved.

While standard compression methods available include complex source encoding schemes, the scanning of the image is often performed by a horizontal (row-by-row) or vertical scanning. In this work a new scanning method, called ridge scanning, for lossless compression of fingerprint images is presented. By using ridge scanning our goal is to increase the redundancy in data and thereby increase the compression rate. By using orientations, estimated from the linear symmetry property of local neighbourhoods in the fingerprint, a scanning algorithm which follows the ridges and valleys is developed. the properties of linear symmetry axe also used for a segmentation of the fingerprint into two parts, one part which lacks orientation and one that has it. We demonstrate that ridge scanning increases the compression ratio for Lempel-Ziv coding as well as recursive Huffman coding with approximately 3% in average. Compared to JPEG-LS, using ridge scanning and recursive Huffman the gain is 10% in average.
