A client-server application for MPEG-4 video distribution, in a VOD (Video-On-Demand) infrastructure, has been built up granting authorized fruition by means of digital watermarking. Once the consumer has chosen to watch a program, his smart card code, plugged in the set top box, is sent back to the server side. this code will be embedded, exactly at that time, in the video sequence before streaming it towards the client through the network (the code will be obviously used for payment too). the client side, adequately equipped with the watermark detector, receives the video and checks it by extracting the identifying code, this one is matched with the code located in the end user smart card and if the comparison is right rendering is allowed, otherwise decoding is stopped and fruition is inhibited.

A bit rate allocation (BRA) strategy is needed to optimally compress three-dimensional (3-D) data on a per-slice basis, treating it as a collection of two-dimensional (2-D) slices/components. this approach is compatible with the framework of JPEG2000 Part 2 which includes the option of pre-processing the slices with a decorrelation transform in the cross-component direction so that slices of transform coefficients are compressed. In this paper, we illustrate the impact of a recently developed inter-slice rate-distortion optimal bit-rate allocation approach that is applicable to this compression system. the approach exploits the MSE optimality of all JPEG2000 bit streams for all slices when each is produced in the quality progressive mode. Each bit stream can be used to produce a rate-distortion curve (RDC) for each slice that is MSE optimal at each bit rate of interest. the inter-slice allocation approach uses all RDCs for all slices to optimally select an overall optimal set of bit rates for all the slices using a constrained optimization procedure. the optimization is conceptually similar to Post-compression Rate-Distortion optimization that is used within JPEG2000 to optimize bit rates allocated to codeblocks. Results are presented for two types of data sets: a 3-D computed tomography (CT) medical image, and a 3-D metereological data set derived from a particular modeling program. For comparison purposes, compression results are also illustrated for the traditional log-variance approach and for a uniform allocation strategy. the approach is illustrated using two decorrelation tranforms (the Karhunen Loeve transform, and the discrete wavelet transform) for which the inter-slice allocation scheme has the most impact.

this paper introduces a new interactive mobile TV application related to parliament session. this application aims to provide additional information to mobile TV users by inserting automatically and in real-time interactive contents (complementary information, subject of the current session...) into original TV program, using MPEG-4 streaming video and extra real time information (news, events, databases... from RSS streams, Internet links...). Here, we propose an architecture based on plug-in multimedia analyzers to generate the contextual description of the media and on an interactive scene generator to dynamically create related interactive scenes. Description is implemented according to the MPEG-7 standard.

the reconstruction of 3D visual data from 2D images is an important task in image processing. For the estimation of depth in the scene, a stereoscopic image pair is necessary. When dealing, with coding and transmission of such stereoscopic image data, single image coding is not suitable here. the disparity, i.e. the local displacements in the image pair, can be used for an efficient coding approach. To ensure good quality, lossless coding is applied and compared. In order to the specific content of the disparity map, compression gains higher than factor 10 are achievable. At the receiver, the stereoscopic image pair can be reconstructed having only one original image and the disparity map. An interlaced image is produced to ensure the persistence of the 3D impression.

In Wyner Ziv video coding, efficient compression is achieved by exploiting source statistics at the decoder only, which is radically different front conventional video coding. Prior works on this topic generally use channel coding to implement Slepian-Wolf codec. However, the correlation between some bitplanes of source and that of side information may be very weak. At that time, the coding performance of Slepian- Wolf codec should be lower than that of intracoding codec. If we can divide the video data into strongly cot-relative data encoded by Slepian-Wolf codec and weakly correlative data encoded by Intracoding codec, the coding performance of video codec would be improved In this paper, we proposed a novel distributed video coding scheme with part Intracoding. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better compression efficiency while keeping the simple encoding property.

the rapid development of multimedia and Internet technology has given more and more people the opportunity to exchange information via the Internet. there are many cases in which images containing trivial information are transmitted, but most of the time images will contain private data and therefore must be protected. Consequently, the security and confidentiality of digital data during storage and transmission have become an important and critical issue. Digital image scrambling is often used for image encryption and its aim is to transform a meaningful image into a meaningless one to enhance the ability to resist invalid attack and in turn improve security. In this paper, a new scheme is presented for digital gray image scrambling based on variants of the famous Game of Life (GoL) Cellular Automaton (CA). More specifically, two of those variations, namely asynchrony and enlarged neighborhood are taken into account. they are further enhanced to implement suitable GoL variations for efficient digital grey image scrambling while the presented simulation results prove that the modified variations can provide high security by scrambling pixel locations. It is shown that the resulting scrambling effect is influenced by the employed variation of GoL as well as by the dimensions of the image. Finally, in terms of Gray Difference Degree (GDD) the proposed digital image scrambling method, which is based on the aforementioned GoL variations, outperforms the existing techniques and produces an effective image encryption technique which enables excellent confidentiality. the recent light field imaging technology has been attracting a lot of interests due to its potential applications in a large number of areas including Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Teleconferencing, and E-learning. Light Field (LF) data is able to provide rich visual information such as scene rendering with changes in depth of field, viewpoint, and focal length. However, Light Field data usually associates to a critical problem - the massive data. therefore, compressing LF data is one of the main challenges in LF research. In this context, we present in this paper a comparative study for compressing LF data with not only the widely used image/video coding standards, such as JPEG-2000, H.264/AVC, HEVC and Google/VP9 but also with the most recent image/video coding solution, the Joint Exploration Model. In addition, this paper also proposes a LF image coding flow, which can be used as a benchmark for future LF compression evaluation. Finally, the compression efficiency of these coding solutions is thoroughly compared throughout a rich set of test conditions. © 2017 IEEE.

With the rapid development of deep learning, more and more images and videos are used for machine analysis. the amount of images and video content consumed by machines has exceeded that of humans. However, the traditional image and video coding schemes are designed for human vision system, where information that is vital to machine vision, e.g., boundary of a salient object, may not be preserved during compression. In this paper, based on high efficiency video coding (HEVC) intra coding, we propose an image compression scheme for machines using boundary-enhanced saliency. Using image classification as an example task, Grad-CAM, a deep learning visualization method, is used to interpret classification results to generate a pixel-level saliency map for each image. Object segmentation and edge detection are then performed to generate boundary map of the salient object. With boundary-enhanced saliency map, we derive a coding tree unit (CTU)-level QP adjustment scheme, where more bits are allocated to salient regions of image concerning machine vision. Experimental results show that, compared with HEVC, our proposed scheme could achieve up to 29.94% and 31.53% bitrate saving with the same TOP 1 and TOP5 accuracy performance in image classification, respectively.

Baseband data Handling (BDH) system is one of the major subsystems in the Payload data downlink chain in all the remote sensing satellite missions. Its main functionality is to collect payload data, align data, compress the same and organize as space packets, multiplex these space packets into transfer frames that can be stored or downlinked for further transmission. Furthermore, encryption and channel coding are performed at the downlink chain. As the resolution of payload increases, data volume and number of ports from payloads increase drastically. To handle this high data rate, a modular and scalable architecture is required which focuses on realization cost and realization time. this paper focuses on advanced, cost effective, modular high data rate data Handling System with many advanced features like DWT based Slice Redundant compression system, On Board Radiometric Correction, Variable Integration time for payloads, configurable formatter, selectable compression ratio, programmable NUC coefficients for different TDI stages and SPI protocol for communication between different subsystems of BDH system. At present, this system is flown in a High Resolution Remote Sensing Satellite and providing excellent services. Same system will be reused for future missions.

In this paper, we propose a simple subband image compression scheme using wavelet decomposition. the proposed coding scheme employs a multi-level dyadic wavelet decomposition, organizes and orders the resultant wavelet coefficients using pre-determined quadtree data structure, and finally encode symbols by arithmetic coding with pre-designed context information. Despite the simplicity of the scheme, the experimental result shows it is competitive with the presently available schemes when compared with various types of test images. © 2003 IEEE.
