the periscopic stereo approach is explored in connection to virtual reality (VR) modeling. the system, which employs a rotating mirror, yields imagery superimposed with two rotational effects: one constructs a panoramic view around a room, while the other has the effect of camera rotation. Compensating for the latter effect yields a panoramic view of the room which can be used for constructing a QuickTime VR model. Experimental investigations demonstrate the technique to be viable over the range of distances commonly encountered in a room. However, the technique consistently underestimated the distances to objects and was a little less accurate than two-camera stereo in simulations.

One way to improve the robustness of principal component analysis (PCA) is studied in order to increase the accuracy of feature-extraction in bank-check recognition. the typical two kinds of aspects to analyze the robustness of PCA algorithm are proposed and compared: one is based on the independent among the acquired principal components and the other is based on reducing the effects of the outliers in the training sample set. A new self-organizing algorithm of robust PCA is presented based on the structure of single-layer neural network (NN) withthe modification of the cost function which stands for the reconstruction error of the input signal. the new nonlinear robust PCA algorithm can recognize the outliers in the training sample set automatically and exterminate their effects to the accuracy and convergence of the PCA algorithm through proper processing to the recognized outliers.

Two iterative algorithms for the design of partial filter banks using interpolation are described. the design problems are formulated as a 4th-order nonlinear optimization problems in which the objective function is a weighted sum of a reconstruction-error term and an aliasing-error term. the optimization problem is solved by iteratively minimizing a pair of quadratic functions. Explicit formulas for evaluating the minimums of these quadratic functions are described, which lead to an efficient and fast algorithm. Two design examples are presented to illustrate the proposed algorithms. the designed partial filter banks are used to approximate bathymetric waveforms and electrocardiagrams (ECGs).
