Ladder Diagram (LD) is the most used programming language for Programmable Logical Controllers (PLCs). A PLC is a special purpose industrial computer used to automate industrial processes. Bugs in LD programs, are very costly and sometimes are even a threat to human safety. We: propose a model driven approach for formal verification of LD programs through model-checking. We provide a metamodel for a subset of the LD language. We define a time Petri net (TPN) semantics for LD programs through an ATL model transformation. Finally, we automatically generate behavioral properties over the LD models as LTL formulae which are then checked over the generated TPN using the model-checkers available in the Tina toolkit. We focus on race condition detection.

the increasing size and complexity of software systems requires sophisticated testing methodologies. Since platform limitations could void the results of test suites, especially the embedded systems domain requires testing methodologies that also consider hardware resources. Current approaches for specifying and executing test cases, e.g. approaches based on the UML testing model, do not support the concept of platform testing very well. Deployment descriptions are only used for documentation. In this work, we address this problem by providing an extension to the UML testing profile that covers the modeling of platform testing models, which include realistic deployments, and by C-PartsSim, our simulation tool that is capable of executing these platform testing models. With C-PartsSim, it is possible to connect specialized simulators at runtime, thereby providing a configurable, platform-specific system simulation for testing. We describe the automatic transformation from scenario models to a tailored simulator instance for a concrete testing scenario and present case studies to demonstrate the flexibility and accuracy of our approach.

In requirements engineering, there are several approaches for requirements modeling such as goal-oriented, aspect-driven, and system requirements modeling. In practice, companies often customize a given approach to their specific needs. thus, we seek a solution that allows customization in a systematic way. In this paper, we propose a metamodel for requirements models (called core metamodel) and an approach for customizing this metamodel in order to support various requirements modeling approaches. the core metamodel represents the common concepts extracted from some prevalent approaches. We define the semantics of the concepts and the relations in the core metamodel. Based on this formalization, we can perform reasoning on requirements that may detect implicit relations and inconsistencies. Our approach for customization keeps the semantics of the core concepts intact and thus allows reuse of tools and reasoning over the customized metamodel. We illustrate the customization of our core metamodel with SysML concepts. As a case study, we apply the reasoning on requirements of an industrial mobile service application based on this customized core requirements metamodel.

the level of maturity that has been reached by model transformation technologies is proved by the growing literature on transformation libraries that address an increasingly wide spectrum of applications. With the success of the modeling and transformation paradigm, the need arises to address more complex applications that require a direct manipulation of model transformations. the uniformity and flexibility of the model-driven paradigm allows this class of applications to make use of the same transformation infrastructure. this is possible because transformations can be translated into transformation models and given as objects to a different class of model transformations, called Higher-Order Transform at ions (HOT). this paper provides an introduction to HOTs and a survey of the several application cases where their use is relevant. A number of possible future applications of HOTs is also proposed.

Integration of heterogeneous and distributed IT-systems is one of the major cost-driving factors in the software industry. We introduce a model-based approach for information system integration and demonstrate it on the industrial case-study of data integration between the Oracle database management system and the SAP R/3 enterprise resource planning system. Particular focus is on multi-level modeling abstractions, integration conflict analysis (automatic data model matching), semantic reasoning, code generation and tool support.

We present a case study that utilizes UML modeling methodology for typical business applications. Such applications generally contain a GUI front-end for manipulating database tables and are object-relational systems that deal with both relational databases and object-oriented technology. To model such applications, we use UML Profiles and metamodels based on a three-tiered application architecture for the different stages of the development lifecycles. the benefits of the model-driven approach include the possible use of the models for maintenance processes such as incremental code generation, updating test cases, and documentation. these models also enable developers to validate the application's flow by simulating its behavior through model execution.

Software developed for the space domain often has to deal with extremely long mission times (sometimes in the order of 15 to 20 years). During the lifetime of a mission programming platforms evolve and sometimes disappear forcing migrations or updates. Migration can also be triggered by the appearance of new platforms that can improve scalability, performance. european Space Agency (ESA) is interested in modernization approaches that simplify platform migration and that preserve the business values of systems. the architecture driven Modernization (ADM) promoted by the Object Management Group (OMG) proposes to recover the models which represent the business value and proceed with the platform migration in a forward MDA process. this article provides results of a study dedicated to assess the state-of-the-art tools and methods for model driven platform migration, including model-based testing and metrication.

Railroad interlocking software drives specialised micro-devices, known as interlocking controllers. these controllers primarily actuate railroad points and change signal aspects in real-time, based on sensor and timer input. Due to their central function in railroad control, interlocking controllers and their firmware are safety-critical. the firmware programs, which mimic physical relays, are written in variants of domain-specific programming languages based on ladder logic. the programs have to comply with a more abstract specification of allowable states of sections of railroad track and equipment, known as a control table. the translation of a track layout and associated control tables into ladder logic-based code is manual, and hence subject to costly review and rework cycles. In this report, we describe a case study that uses a model-driven tool-chain as an automated alternative to the existing process. the two domain languages, control table and ladder logic, were modelled and transformations were implemented between the two models, and from model to program text. We report on implementation challenges, and describe the outlook and scalability of the approach in this application domain.

Context-awareness is a very important feature for pervasive services to enhance their flexibility and adaptability to changing conditions and dynamic environments. Using ontologies to model context information and to reason about context at a semantic level has attracted a lot of interest in the research community. However, most of the proposed solutions are ad hoc or proprietary. therefore, employing standard approaches to formulate the development process becomes of importance. In-this paper we examine how OMG's model driven architecture (MDA) can be applied to tackle the issues of context modelling and Context-Aware Application (CAA) modelling and development. A Context Ontology model (COM) is presented to model context information at two levels: upper-level and extended specific level. A model driven Integration architecture (MDIA) is then proposed to integrate rigorous model specifications and generate CAA implementations either semi-automatically or automatically.

Technological and business changes influence the evolution of software systems. When this happens, the software artifacts may need to be adapted to the changes. this need is rapidly increasing in systems built using the model-driven Engineering (MDE) paradigm. An MDE system basically consists of metamodels, terminal models, and transformations. the evolution of a metamodel may render its related terminal models and transformations invalid. this paper proposes a three-step solution that automatically adapts terminal models to their evolving metamodels. the first step computes the equivalences and (simple and complex) changes between a given metamodel, and a former version of the same metamodel. the second step translates the equivalences and differences into an adaptation transformation. this transformation can then be executed in a third step to adapt to the new version any terminal model conforming to the former version. We validate our ideas by implementing a prototype based on the AtlanMod model Management architecture (AMMA.) platform. We present the accuracy and performance that the prototype delivers on two concrete examples: a Petri Net metamodel from the research literature, and the Netbeans Java metamodel.
