Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a powerful technology used in complex and real-time environments. CEP is an Event driven architecture (EDA) style consists of processing different events within the distributed enterprise system attempting to discover interesting information from multiple streams of events in timely manner. In real world, the streams of events are uncertain, which means that is not guaranteed that an event has actually occurred, this uncertainty is due mainly to imprecise content from the event sources (Sensors, RFID,...). As a result, probabilistic CEP has become an important issue in complex environments that require a real-time reaction given streams of probabilistic events. It is evident that building probabilistic CEP applications is not a trivial task, which makes the description of these applications and the analysis of their behavior a necessary task. In this paper, we propose a formal verification approach for probabilistic CEP applications based on probabilistic model checking. To this end, we use the probabilistic Timed Automata (PTA) for describing the probabilistic CEP applications, and the Probabilistic Timed CTL (PTCTL) logic for specifying probabilistic timed properties.

While public finance data are becoming openly available as part of the broader promotion of fiscal transparency, there is little effort towards maximizing their potential value by interlinking them under a concrete framework and establishing the means to extract interesting insights. the Linked Open Economy model (LOE) aims to act as a top-level conceptualization that connects economic flows with open economic data and as an adaptable and extensible underlying model for modelling different scenarios. the paper presents the LOE model, emphasizing its theoretical foundations. Furthermore, it presents the usage of the model in realistic settings, showcasing its extensibility and its ability to address interesting questions.

Internet of things (IoT) and sensor networks are improving the cooperation between organizations, becoming more efficient and productive for the industrial systems. However, high iteration between human, machines, and heterogeneous IoT technologies increases the security threats. the IoT security is an essential requirement to fully adoption of applications, which requires correct management of information and confidentiality. the system and devices’ variability requires dynamically adaptive systems to provide services depending on the context of the environment. In this paper, we propose a model driven adaptive approach to offer security services for an ontology-based security framework. model-driven Engineering (MDE) approach allows creating secure capabilities more efficient with the generation of security services based on security requirements in the knowledge base (IoTSec ontology). An industrial scenario of C2NET project was analyzed to identify the transformation of a system design of security solution in a platform specific model. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

Continuous demand for higher performance is adding more pressure on hardware designers to provide faster machines with low energy consumption. Recent technological advancements allow placing a group of silicon dies on top of a conventional interposer (silicon layer), which provides space to integrate logic and interconnection resources to manage active processing cores. However, such large resource availability requires an adequate Program eXecution model (PXM) as well as an efficient mechanism to allocate resources in the system. From this perspective, fine-grain data-driven PXMs represent an attractive solution to reduce the cost of synchronising concurrent activities. the contribution of this work is twofold. First, a hardware architecture called TALHES - a Task ALlocator for HEterogeneous System is proposed to support scheduling of multi-threaded applications (adhering to an explicit data-driven PXM). TALHES introduces a Network-on-Chip (NoC) extension: i) while on-chip 2D-mesh NoCs are used to support locality of computations in the execution of a single task;ii) a global task scheduler integrated into the silicon interposer orchestrates application tasks among different clusters of cores (eventually with different computing capabilities). the second contribution of the paper is a simulation framework that is tailored to support the analysis of such fine-grain data-driven applications. In this work, Linux Containers are used to abstract and efficiently simulate clusters of cores (i.e., a single die), as well as the behaviour of the global scheduling unit.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) refer to the next generation of embedded ICT systems that are interconnected, collaborative and that provide users and businesses with a wide range of smart applications and services. Software in CPS applications ranges from small systems to large systems, aka. Systems of Systems (SoS), such as smart grids and cities. CPSoS require managing massive amounts of data, being aware of their emerging behavior, and scaling out to progressively evolve and add new systems. Cloud computing supports processing and storing massive amounts of data, hosting and delivering services, and configuring self-provisioned resources. therefore, cloud computing is the natural candidate to solve CPSoS needs. However, the diversity of platforms and the low-level cloud programming models make difficult to find a common solution for the development and deployment of CPSoS. this paper presents the architectural foundations of a cloud-centric framework for automating the development and deployment of CPSoS service applications to converge towards a common open service platform for CPSoS applications. this framework relies on the well-known qualities of the microservices architecture style, the autonomic computing paradigm, and the model-driven software development approach. Its implementation and validation is on-going at two european and national projects.

One of the current challenges in model-driven engineering is enabling effective collaborative modelling. Two common approaches are either storing the models in a central repository, or keeping them under a traditional file-based version control system and build a centralized index for model-wide queries. Either way, special attention must be paid to the nature of these repositories and indexes as networked services: they should remain responsive even with an increasing number of concurrent clients. this paper presents an empirical study on the impact of certain key decisions on the scalability of concurrent model queries, using an Eclipse Connected Data Objects model repository and a Hawk model index. the study evaluates the impact of the network protocol, the API design and the internal caching mechanisms and analyzes the reasons for their varying performance.

model-driven engineering (MDE) has been extended in recent years to account for reliability and performance requirements since the early design stages of an application. While this quality-aware MDE exists for both enterprise and cloud applications, it does not exist yet for Big Data systems. DICE is a novel Horizon2020 project that aims at filling this gap by defining the first quality-driven MDE methodology for Big Data applications. Concrete outputs of the project will include a data-aware UML profile capable of describing Big Data technologies and architecture styles, data-aware quality prediction methods, and continuous delivery tools.

In many development environments, model-driven Engineering (MDE) may well be limited to parts of the complete product development process due to the lack of interoperability mechanisms that connect the product data across the model-based engineering tools being used. this is especially the case if the tools are not designed to work tightly together, and/or if they do not share a common technological basis. In this paper, we investigate the use of the OASIS OSLC interoperability standard to facilitate the integration of models from different languages into a single coherent view. We evaluate a fully-automated code generator that provides OSLC interfaces for EMF-based modelling tools, allowing the exposure of modelling elements from any rich modelling language. We argue that such a generator is a critical component for reducing the cost of providing rich and specialized tool interfaces, generally needed when integrating modelling tools. the study is based on a case study that addresses the development process - and the corresponding integrated software engineering environment - at Volvo Trucks used when developing a new electronic architecture including heavy vehicle functions.

Nowadays, enterprises have been pushed up the rate of industrial transformation to high level products and services. the capability to agilely respond to new market demands became a strategic pillar for enterprises survival. It leads to the necessity of create mechanisms to allow enterprises to combine forces to compete jointly in the market, in order to raise their own added value and to become specialist in niche activities. But to unite forces, enterprises must exchange information/knowledge between them. A semantic problem emerges when the same representation of a thing can have different meanings to different applications and enterprises. It can be a disabler for information exchange and its interpretation. the Semantic Web Service concept emerges as a solution to facilitate Web Services description and consequently discovery tasks, unifying the domain services. Moreover, the data integration between concepts can be achieved trough mappings establishment between Web Services elements. However, a solution that allows to map Web Service elements to semantic concepts represented using OWL is still missing. To face this issue, a model-driven approach supported by a mapping tool is here presented with the aim of facilitate the information exchange trough the establishment of mappings between enterprises services models and the domain reference lexicon.
